Beye replaces Sampaoli as Rennes head coach
PARIS, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Former Senegal international Habib Beye has been named Stade Rennais head coach to replace the sacked Jorge Sampaoli, the Ligue 1 club said on Thursday.
Beye, who won 44 caps with Senegal from 2001-08, spent most of his playing career at RC Strasbourg and Olympique de Marseille before stints at Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers.
Argentine Sampaoli was dismissed after seven defeats in 10 games since he was appointed last November, leaving the Brittany club in 16th place in the Ligue 1 standings.

Rangers coach Issame Charai has left the club after five months in the backroom staff. Charai joined the Ibrox side in January to assist former boss Philippe Clement and remained on the coaching staff throughout Barry Ferguson's interim spell. 'Above all, I want to thank the Rangers supporters for their amazing backing across the period. We had some high moments and some low moments, but their support was the constant. It is something I will always remember and be forever grateful for.' Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart commented: 'I want to place on record the sincere thanks of both the club and I to Issame for his work over the past six months. 'Through the managerial transition in February and beyond, he handled himself superbly and was a real asset to Barry and his staff during their period in charge of the team. 'As the men's first-team moves forth into this new era under Russell, it has been agreed between the club and Issame for him to move on. 'For whatever comes next for him, I want to wish him the very best of luck. He will always be welcome back at Ibrox.' Arsenal hold initial talks to sign Brazil star Alexsandro
Arsenal have made an initial approach for Lille centre-back Alexsandro, according to reports in Brazil. The 25-year-old has one of the standout defenders in Ligue 1 this season and was rewarded with his first senior call-up for Brazil's national side by Carlo Ancelotti last month. Alexsandro continued his impressive form for Brazil as he delivered two solid performances in the goalless draw against Ecuador last week and in the 1-0 win against Paraguay on Tuesday night.
