Ramses blaze disrupts key services in Egypt as authorities race to restore normalcy - Society

Al-Ahram Weekly10-07-2025
Cooling operations are still underway at the Ramses Telephone Exchange in downtown Cairo, following a major fire that broke out on Monday, resulting in four deaths and over 20 injuries.
The blaze, which was fully contained, has caused disruptions to communications, internet networks, and other essential services across the capital.
CBE raises daily cash withdrawals
The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced a temporary increase in the daily maximum cash withdrawal limit in local currency from EGP 250,000 to EGP 500,000 for individuals and companies.
In a statement, the CBE said the new withdrawal limit will remain effective until normal operations are fully resumed.
Electronic withdrawal limits via ATMs and digital platforms remain unchanged.
The decision comes as a proactive measure to facilitate financial transactions as the banking sector is working to restore full functionality of communication systems amid the current service disruptions.
The CBE emphasized its commitment to ensuring financial stability and maintaining a smooth operation of banking services nationwide.
EGX suspends Tuesday trading
The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) announced the suspension of all trading activities on Tuesday, 8 July, citing recent market developments and technical and operational challenges within the trading environment.
In an official statement, EGX emphasized that despite intensive efforts by all stakeholders to stabilize the market and ensure efficient communication across the trading ecosystem, particularly among brokerage firms, the current conditions have not yet met the necessary standards for fair and orderly trading.
The exchange reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of all market participants and maintaining a level playing field.
It also noted that the suspension aims to uphold market integrity and investor confidence.
Although EGX affirmed it continues to work closely with relevant entities to restore full functionality as soon as possible, it gave no indication as to when trading will resume.
Cairo Airport resumes flights
The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that all flights affected by the recent sudden disruption in communications and internet networks have now taken off.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that operations at Cairo International Airport have returned to normal and that the whole operating system has been restored across all terminals after implementing alternative solutions.
Additionally, airport operation teams continue to perform their duties efficiently to ensure the continuity of operations and closely monitor all technical and operational systems.
They are also working to ensure the delivery of top-quality services to travellers in accordance with the highest standards of safety and quality, the ministry said.
Subsidized bread distribution working normally
Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk confirmed that the distribution of subsidized bread to citizens across all Egyptian governorates is ongoing efficiently.
He stated that bakeries have been operating at full capacity since Tuesday morning, with bread being dispensed normally through electronic machines without any obstacles.
Farouk explained that bread dispensing machines are equipped with multiple SIM cards, allowing bakery owners to switch between networks to ensure uninterrupted service.
This flexibility has helped maintain the system's stability and prevented any partial outages from affecting operations.
He also emphasized the ministry's commitment to ensuring citizens receive their subsidized bread easily and consistently.
Moreover, Farouk noted that operational teams remain actively engaged in providing support to bakeries facing temporary technical issues to ensure stability of the subsidy distribution system under all conditions.
Communication services to resume in 24 hours
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat said all telecommunication services will be gradually restored within 24 hours.
He dismissed claims that Egypt relies on a single telephone exchange, confirming that although Ramses Telephone Exchange will remain out of service for several days, service restoration is underway through alternative exchanges.
Talaat affirmed that all critical services — such as emergency numbers, bread distribution system, airports, ports, and essential utilities — are operating normally in most governorates.
According to Talaat, only a few areas have witnessed temporary service disruptions, which are currently being handled, noting that the situation is being monitored in real time.
He directed officials to swiftly complete all repair and restoration work and make a list of all affected users to compensate them.

Leading the export list were: Iron and steel products: $35 million Plastics and plastic goods: $12 million Sugar and confectionery: $8 million Prepared cereals: $7 million Pharmaceutical products: $6 million These figures reflect Egypt's strategic push to expand its industrial footprint in African markets, particularly in East Africa. The primary imports from Uganda included: Dairy products: $10 million Coffee, tea, and spices: $10 million Tobacco: $6 million The trade balance remains heavily in Egypt's favor, highlighting the need for more diversified and value-added exports from Uganda. The flow of remittances also saw changes in 2024. Remittances from Egyptians working in Uganda totaled $4.1 million for the fiscal year 2023/24, a slight decrease from $4.8 million in the previous year. Meanwhile, remittances from Ugandans working in Egypt rose to $1 million, up from $706,000. Investment trends were mixed. Ugandan investments in Egypt dropped significantly to $1.9 million in FY 2023/24, compared to $8.4 million the previous year. Conversely, Egyptian investments in Uganda saw a mild uptick, rising to $3.3 million from $2.9 million. According to CAPMAS, Egypt's population reached 107.9 million by August 2025, while Uganda recorded a population of 51.5 million during the same period. Gold Falls Locally Despite Global Ounce Gains on Dollar Weakness and Fed Rate Cut Expectations

Waleed Farouk Local gold markets saw a decline in prices during Wednesday's trading, despite gains in global ounce prices, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar after the latest U.S. inflation data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its upcoming mid-September meeting, according to the 'iSagha' platform. Local gold prices fell by about EGP 5 compared to yesterday's close, with 21-karat gold recording EGP 4,570 per gram, while the ounce gained about $7 to reach $3,355. The price of 24-karat gold reached EGP 5,223, 18-karat stood at EGP 3,917, and 14-karat at EGP 3,047, while the gold pound was priced at EGP 36,560. On Tuesday, gold had also dropped by about EGP 5, with 21-karat starting the session at EGP 4,580 and closing at EGP 4,575. In the global market, the ounce declined by about $3, opening at $3,351 and closing at $3,348. Today's gold movements were volatile, driven by U.S. inflation data and developments related to tariffs, as the metal fell to new lows before briefly rebounding near $3,355 per ounce. The local market's decline was also linked to the drop in the U.S. dollar against the Egyptian pound, with the Central Bank's latest rates at EGP 48.37 for buying and EGP 48.50 for selling. U.S. Inflation Data and Impact on Gold The July Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed headline inflation rising by 0.2% month-on-month and 2.7% year-on-year, while core inflation (excluding food and energy) increased by 0.3% month-on-month and 3.1% year-on-year. Energy prices fell by 1.1%, food prices were unchanged, and the impact of tariffs so far has been limited. The figures indicate that U.S. companies are still absorbing much of the additional costs, preventing them from being passed directly to consumers. Combined with signs of a slowing labor market, these data boosted the probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut in September to over 95%, according to the CME FedWatch tool, supporting gold prices by pressuring the U.S. dollar. Geopolitical and Trade Landscape Optimism over a 90-day extension of the U.S.-China tariff truce and anticipation of U.S.-Russia peace talks in Alaska on Friday have limited gold's upward momentum as safe-haven demand eased. Tariff Developments on Gold U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that no tariffs will be imposed on gold bullion, ending a wave of concern that rattled markets last week, particularly over potential duties on 1-kg bars that would have impacted Switzerland, one of the largest gold exporters. The Swiss Precious Metals Producers Association welcomed the decision but called for an official decree to ensure stability, while the White House confirmed that an executive order is being prepared to address misinformation about gold tariffs. Investment Trends in Asia A Bloomberg report noted that wealthy Asian investors have more than doubled their gold holdings over the past year, especially in Hong Kong. Some lend bullion to local jewelers or enter profit-sharing partnerships, while others exploit price differentials between markets. Future Outlook Despite potential catalysts, gold has failed to break above $3,400, keeping it under selling pressure that could drive it to test lower support levels, especially as recent rally peaks have been lower than their predecessors. U.S. Political and Monetary Policy Trump intensified his criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, hinting at allowing a lawsuit against him over what he described as poor management of Fed building projects—adding a new political dimension to market risks. Separately, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged the Fed to cut rates by 50 basis points, citing weak jobs data and slowing inflation. Trump also nominated economist E.J. Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics after dismissing Erica MacEntarfer, amid controversy over data collection methods. Meanwhile, the Fed continues to balance its dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment against a backdrop of a clearly slowing labor market. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
