Major ITV drama with Hollywood star cancelled after just one series
ITV's hit drama Joan has been axed after just one series.
The gritty true crime drama featured former Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner in the leading role of accomplished jewel thief Joan Hannington, a single mother who has turned to a life of crime to provide for her daughter, and drew in four million viewers for the broadcaster.
Despite its success, it has now been confirmed that no more episodes will be produced thanks to an scheduling issues with its leading star.
A spokesperson said: "ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce another series of Joan. However, as a consequence of cast availability and following co-production discussions it has meant a second series wasn't possible.' Prior to this announcement, Richard Laxton previously claimed that there was 'definitely potential' for the series to continue, although things have now changed. There had been attempts to bring Joan's story to the screen before, with A-listers Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow both having been tied to projects that never came to fruition.
Sophie, who divorced former Disney Channel star Joe Jonas last year after five years of marriage and is now dating Peregrine Pearson, will soon be seen in the upcoming thriller Trust and has also been filming the leading role in the Amazon Prime series Steal It's also thought that she will be taking on the role of video game heroine Lara Croft in a Tomb Raider TV series, nearly 25 years after Angelina Jolie first brought the part to the big screen.
After an extensive promotional campaign, ITV finally aired the much-anticipated first episode of Joan in September last year and told the story over a period of six episodes. In the first instalment, viewers met Joan juggling motherhood to her daughter Kelly, boogieing to Bucks Fizz in the kitchen, and strutting off to work at a local club.
But tensions soared when she returned home to find her husband Gary (Nick Blood) missing. He reappeared with daylight, and dropped a bombshell about his need to vanish due to dangerous pursuits. The stakes were raised to heart-stopping heights when Joan stared down the barrel of a gun, held by thugs in her own home. The reality hit hard, and she resolves to ditch Gary, entrusting her daughter to foster care while she scrambles for their next move.
At the time, the actress explained how she had found herself drawn to the project, stating: "There was so much about the show that appealed. First of all, it was a story about a real woman. Joan had an obscene appetite for adventure and doing new things. I was drawn as well to the way she could compartmentalise her life."
Turner also had the opportunity to meet the real-life Joan Hannington, describing their encounter as deeply emotional. "The moment Joan walked in, she burst into tears. We hadn't even said anything. She just said, 'It's perfect.' I think Frank [Dillane] cried, too. It was just a very, very emotional meeting. I learned such a lot from her. I learnt about her bravado, the way she owned the room as she walked into it it was like she had the world wrapped around her little finger."
When the programme finally made it to air, it drew millions of viewers and won praise from fans across social media, with one writing: "I hope this production and all the actors and actresses inside, win some awards, they did such a good job. Even more impressive and touching when you remember that everything you're seeing really happened. It's very gripping. A second viewer said: "This drama is fabulous, loving the story and the 80's vibe."
Another viewer was spot on board, tweeting: "I'm loving the 80's music on this programme tonight. Capturing the nostalgia, another chimed in: "Joan. Omg it's taking me right back to the 80s my era. I love it. Music. Clothes. Sony Walkman headphones... smokin' in clubs." (sic)
A fifth viewer was also impressed with the nostalgiac setting of the programme, adding: "So far a show set in 1985 has had Making Your Mind Up on the radio and Tainted Love in a club (both 1981). The soundtrack approach seems to be 'any 80s tunes will do'."

Now, amid the chaos, some fans have speculated that Harry and Shakira could well get back together, especially with the impending recouple which will see the boys choose the girl they want to couple up with. Whether or not they reignite their romantic spark, fans have begged that Shakira bags a spot in the final 'no matter what.' On social media, one person wrote: 'I just want to see Shakira in the final she can break up with harry outside at this point, idc. My girl deserves the final.' A second penned: "Like this post if you will still vote Shakira to make the final or win even if she is coupled up with harry.' And a third said: 'HEAR ME OUT (I don't like harry) but this is the first time he's talking serious, even being serious and it could get our Shakira to the final, so…' Another person echoed: 'Whatever you choose to do, Shakira I fully support you princess. Let's get you to the final.' On Sunday night's episode, viewers will watch as Harry and Shakira get chance to chat after the explosive Grafties. Sitting together inside, Harry and Shakira debrief about how they're feeling. Love Island star demands co-star be sent home after shock comments are exposed in emotionally-charged Grafties Harry says: 'I have really tried with her [Helena], but we [Shakira and Harry] had like a week and it was, for me, the feelings were obviously way stronger and still are. I'm sorry I never like tried again. I really thought the door was just, like, slammed.' Shakira replies: 'Do you want some home truths… it's obviously the way you go about it and the steps you take in between to come to these conclusions obviously hurt people along the way. 'It's all well and good you saying 'hold my hands up guys, sorry' but you still hurt people.' Shakira adds: 'And it's a pattern.' Harry then says: 'Look, I'm either leaving here alone or with you.' On Friday night, Helena was furious as she watched clips of Harry flirting with exes Emma Munro and Shakira Khan - while they were coupled up. She branded Harry a "f*****g joke" and added: "Shakira doesn't want you, I don't wanr you." Fellow OG Islander Conor told Harry later: "Remember what you have first, with Helena. "I think it's quite rare, to be honest, what you do have with her." Harry replied: "I'll be honest mate - and I know you're probably gonna tell her this. "I think it's more friendly, for me." He added: "I just feel like, with Shakira it was way more natural in my opinion. "It was more relationship-focused, more emotional. I feel like I was way more into her." 5 A recoupling will see the boys choose the girls Credit: ITV

But they are far from the first to get caught in such messy situations. Over the years, Love Island has been packed with brutal love triangles that tore friendships apart, sparked arguments, and changed the course of the show. Here's a look back at some of Love Island's most unforgettable love triangles. But, during the Casa Amor segment, Harrison recoupled with Lauren Wood and even spent two nights with her - a move that blindsided Toni. When Harrison returned, she was left to process that he had slept with Lauren behind her back. Lauren launched a tearful confrontation, accusing Harrison of deceit in one of the show's most explosive moments. Despite her heartbreak, Toni then chose to recouple with Harrison, forcing Lauren out in front of the whole villa. Public commentary soon turned fierce, with Women's Aid condemning Harrison's behaviour as emotionally harmful, and fans accused producers of giving Toni a 'winners edit'. Love Island's controversial star Harrison sparks fix row as he shares big villa secret As tensions peaked, Harrison quit the show on July 18th, citing emotional overwhelm and ITV's duty-of-care support. Kai spent time with Sanam, developing a spark that Olivia found impossible to ignore, leading to an explosive row where Olivia accused him of being 'fake'. As heart rates pulsed, Kai revealed he felt something serious for Sanam, leaving Olivia fuming and hurt. Their tension peaked during a public argument, with Olivia berating Kai as fans watched in disbelief. Despite the drama, Sanam's emotional honesty resonated with viewers - admitting she wasn't ready to say 'I love you,' while Kai urged her to be sure. In the end, Kai and Sanam stuck together and won the winter series. Their stability, however, crumbled the moment Molly‑Mae Hague entered the villa - forcing Tommy to face a choice. He told Lucie: 'It's always been you,' before recoupling with Molly‑Mae, leaving Lucie visibly heartbroken in a villa moment etched into Love Island history. Reddit exploded with speculation - some users insisted it was a showmance, others defended that genuine spark - but Molly-Mae and Tommy weathered the storm. Tommy Fury, Molly‑Mae Hague & Maura Higgins (2019) 12 Bombshell Maura Higgins arrived to shake things up once more Credit: ITV Barely a moment passed after Tommy recoupled with Molly‑Mae before Irish bombshell Maura Higgins arrived to shake things up once more. Maura's boldness was impossible to ignore - she delivered a now-iconic massage scene and overtly flirted with Tommy. The flirtation unsettled Molly-Mae, but Tommy remained committed, explicitly rejecting Maura's advances in conversation. The villa watched as Tommy reaffirmed his loyalty to Molly‑Mae, refusing Maura despite her intense persistence. Jourdan Riane, Curtis Pritchard & Amy Hart (2019) 12 Amy Hart was certain Curtis Pritchard was her "half-boyfriend" Credit: Rex 12 Casa Amor introduced Jourdan Riane and changed everything Credit: ITV Amy Hart was certain Curtis Pritchard was her "half-boyfriend" until Casa Amor introduced Jourdan Riane and changed everything. Though Curtis didn't formally recouple with Jourdan, his admission that he had seriously considered it cracked Amy's trust to the core. Amy's vulnerability surfaced visibly - her collapse in tears and declaration: 'I was coming back here to tell you I loved you,' became one of the show's most heart-wrenching lines. The villa was split but public sympathy overwhelmingly stood with Amy. Megan's arrival brought sexual tension, and Wes made the shocking decision to recouple with her at Laura's expense. Laura was visibly blindsided, tears rolling down her cheeks as the villa confronted the split. The fallout was immediate - but Laura's emotional vulnerability won her fans who felt she'd been treated unfairly.
