NEW DELHI:
Samajwadi Party
(SP) chief
Akhilesh Yadav
on Tuesday reaffirmed that the opposition INDIA bloc "remains united" and announced that his party would contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections as part of the anti-BJP bloc.
Speaking to reporters, Yadav dismissed recent remarks that questioned the cohesion of the INDIA bloc.
"I have nothing to do with the statement given by anyone. Our INDIA alliance is intact. Those who want to leave the INDIA alliance can go," Akhilesh Yadav was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
His comments came in response to Congress MP Imran Masood's statement that the Congress is not a "beggar" seeking seats from the Samajwadi Party.
Both parties are key members of the INDIA coalition, which was formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to challenge the all-dominant BJP.
Yadav made it clear that the SP would remain committed to the alliance in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls. The SP-Congress partnership in Uttar Pradesh proved to be a successful combination in the 2024 general elections, with the two parties together securing 43 out of the state's 80 Lok Sabha seats.
Taking a swipe at Uttar Pradesh chief minsiter Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya, Akhilesh said internal friction is becoming evident within the state's "double-engine" BJP government.
"In a place like Kaushambi, the two deputy CMs have spoiled the atmosphere, they are not letting anyone get justice...they do not want any PDA (
Pichhda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak
) family to get justice," he alleged, without providing further details about the situation in Kaushambi.
Yadav reiterated his party's support for a caste-based census. "If the government of the 'samajwadis' is formed, we will get the census done in three months. Today, there is technology, today there are resources, and things can be done in less time," he said.
Yadav, a former UP chief minister, also said the SP is gearing up for the panchayat elections expected to take place in the state early next year.
He alleged that the BJP is manipulating the upcoming panchayat polls by attempting to increase the number of gram panchayats to complicate vote dynamics. "There are about 52,000 gram panchayats right now. They (BJP) are thinking about increasing the numbers, so that our votes get messed up," he claimed.

INDIA bloc intact, those who wantto leave are free to go: Akhilesh

1 2 3 Lucknow: An audibly peeved Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that INDIA bloc was very much in place for the 2027 Assembly polls in UP and those who don't want to be a part of it, can take a walk. For the second day in a row, he reiterated that SP would contest the assembly elections under the INDIA bloc itself. Akhilesh's statement came in response to a media query over Cong's Saharanpur MP Imran Masood's series of remarks last month primarily expressing displeasure over the grand old party being made to play the second fiddle within the INDIA bloc in UP. A few days back Imran had posted a video on X where he had said that Cong will no longer accept the formula that SP had applied in 2024 Lok Sabha polls and that the party was preparing to contest 2027 assembly polls on 200 seats in UP. It may be mentioned here that of the total 80 parliamentary seats in UP, Congress contested on 17 seats while the SP fielded candidates on the remaining 63 seats. When asked to comment on Imran's post at a press conference on Tuesday, Akhilesh said: "I don't have to say anything on what someone has posted on social media or what any journalist has tweeted," Akhilesh said adding: "Humara INDIA gathbandhan intact hai … Jinko jana hai INDIA gathbandhan se chala jaye bahar (Our INDIA bloc is intact … Those who want to leave INDIA bloc, can walk out)," Akhilesh said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Sources said the issue of Masood issuing statements against SP was raised by senior functionaries at the meeting of SP's minority wing held on Monday which was presided over by Akhilesh. It was pointed out that Imran's statements were causing confusion within the Muslim community over the relations between alliance partners of the INDIA bloc. Akhilesh, however, urged the gathering to work towards strengthening the party at the booth level and that he take up the issue with the Cong top brass to address the concerns of the Muslim community on the issue. In the political circles, Masood's statements targeting the SP and accusing its senior functionaries of not proactively addressing the issues related to Muslims, were being seen as an attempt to position himself as the face of the community in UP given that Mohammed Azam Khan – one of the tallest leaders to represent Muslims in the state – is almost out of the political scene due to his jail term and illness. "Apart from that, there is every possibility that Congress is using Imran Masood to strike a better bargain with the SP in the seat sharing formula for the 2027 assembly polls," said a political analyst. The fact that such statements were being made by Imran Masood and not the UPCC chief Ajay Rai or any other office-bearers was being seen as a tactical move which provides enough room for the Congress brass to dismiss his statements as "personal views" if need be, he said. The top brass in SP, however, was unwilling to give any weightage to Imran Masood's statement saying that the seat-sharing modalities would be discussed by the top leaders of the two parties. "Had the statement come from the UPCC functionary, the party would have reacted to it," said a senior SP functionary.

No material to indicate votes cast in name of dead people in Dhule LS seat: HC

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Bombay high court's Aurangabad bench has dismissed BJP leader and former minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre's election petition that Congress nominee Shobha Bachchav's election as MP from Dhule Parliamentary Constituency in Nashik district in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls be set aside on the grounds of irregularities. The court allowed Bachchav's application in the same matter seeking dismissal of Bhamre's election petition. Bhamre polled over 5.80 lakh votes as against over 5.83 lakh votes polled by Bachchav. The victory margin was over 3,800 votes. Of the six assembly segments that fall in Dhule Parliamentary Constituency, Bhamre focused his election petition on the polling in Malegaon Central segment from where he could muster only 4,542 votes as against over 1.98 votes polled by Bachchav. Bhamre contended that a large number of votes were cast in the name of dead voters, who continued to figure in the electoral roll, and multiple votes were cast in the name of same people in different booths. All these votes were cast in favour of the winning candidate, he contended. The bench of Justice Arun Pednekar, however, held on June 13 that there was no material placed on record to indicate that votes were cast in the name of dead people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: 1 Teaspoon of This Before Bed Melts Belly Fat Like Crazy Hollywood News | USA Click Here Undo Similarly, there was no material to substantiate the allegation of multiple votes cast in the name of same people. "By merely having names of dead people on the electoral roll this court will not presume that votes are cast in their names. The polling agents in the booth are aware of the votes cast by people and an affidavit of polling agents present in the polling station stating that votes are cast against dead persons would at least indicate that voting has taken place against the name of dead persons," the bench said while pointing out that there was no affidavit by polling agents that they have noticed votes being cast in the name of dead people or that the polling agent had raised objection to the casting of votes in the name of dead people. The bench cited provisions under the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961 relating to appointment of polling agents and safeguards against impersonation, and ruled, "Presently, there is no material before the court to indicate that large number of persons have cast votes against the names of dead people so as to materially affect the election and this court would not enter into inquiry of the same." "In the election petition, the pleadings have to be precise, specific and unambiguous. If the allegations contained in Election Petition do not set out grounds as contemplated in Section 100 and do not conform to the requirement of Section 81 and 83 of the Act, the Election Petition is liable to be rejected Under Order VII, Rule 11 of Code of Civil Procedure," the bench held.
