Jollibee posts record sales as China business recovers

Business Times2 days ago
[MANILA] Top Philippine restaurant operator Jollibee Foods said sales jumped to a record high in the second quarter as its China business recovered and looks set for a turnaround.
System-wide sales, which measures all sales from company-owned and franchised outlets, jumped 19.6 per cent to 114.5 billion pesos (S$2.6 billion) in the quarter ended June from a year ago, Jollibee said in a statement released on Thursday.
The group, which has more than 10,000 stores and cafes across 33 countries, said net income rose 5.6 per cent to 3.2 billion pesos in April-to-June quarter, the highest since the last quarter of 2021. Jollibee shares climbed as much as 1.9 per cent on Thursday.
Despite softness in the US market, the company said sales at its international business grew 32.6 per cent, driven by its acquisition of South Korea's Compose Coffee. Philippine sales rose 11.3 per cent, fuelled by its flagship Jollibee brand and chicken barbecue chain Mang INasal.
Jollibee, known for its sweet spaghetti and fried chicken dishes, said same-store sales in China grew 3.9 per cent in the quarter from a year earlier after several quarters of decline due to weak consumer spending in the world's second-largest economy.
'China is showing signs of recovery, marking a potential turnaround in performance,' Jollibee Group chief financial and risk officer Richard Shin said in the statement.
'Our strategic shift towards franchising, combined with disciplined capital allocation, is enhancing asset efficiency and ROIC,' Shin said, referring to return on invested capital. 'Today 69 per cent of our stores operate under a franchised model, reflecting our ongoing transition to a more capital-light structure.' BLOOMBERG

Philippine central bank orders e-wallets, payment apps to remove online gambling links

[MANILA] The Philippine central bank ordered mobile wallets, payment applications and other institutions to remove links to online gambling platforms as the nation seeks to curb the booming industry that's raised social concerns. The financial firms have 48 hours from Thursday (Aug 14) to take down icons that redirect users to Internet betting, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) deputy governor Mamerto Tangonan said at a Senate hearing. Shares of top Philippine online gaming firm DigiPlus Interactive fell nearly 20 per cent at the close on Thursday, the biggest slump in two weeks, even after it reported a 30 per cent jump in second-quarter profit. Senators are tackling proposals to either restrict or ban online gambling amid worries over debt and addiction. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr earlier said that a ban could stoke illegal online betting. E-wallets have been instrumental in the online gambling boom. Now, they are coming under scrutiny as lawmakers seek to curtail access. GCash, the country's most popular e-wallet valued at US$5 billion and owned by fintech unicorn Mynt, said that it will comply with the central bank's order. 'Once we receive the official directive, we will immediately enforce the necessary changes to ensure compliance and safeguard our users,' the company said. Maya, the fintech arm of Philippine telco leader PLDT, said that it will likewise take action. 'The update will be implemented in line with the BSP's guidance,' the company said. 'We assure customers that their accounts and transactions remain secure and fully operational.' DigiPlus said that its second-quarter profit growth was driven by its retail games segment and contributions from new games and licenses. DigiPlus, which is set to replace Bloomberry Resorts in the Philippines' benchmark stock index from next week, said that the company remains committed to responsible business practices. BLOOMBERG

Ph government, top fintech firm team up to accelerate digital shift of transport sector

MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Philippine government has partnered with the country's leading e-wallet in line with its agenda to modernize the local transportation sector with world-class payment solutions. Philippine Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, in partnership with other government agencies and private sector groups like leading fintech player GCash, leads the launch of the first open-loop ticketing system in one of the main railways of the country's capital, Metro Manila. The Department of Transportation (DOTr), the country's central bank, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and leading local fintech giant GCash have launched world-class cashless solutions in Metro Manila's main rail line, the Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT-3). This initiative positions the Philippines in the same category as its Southeast Asian neighbors, such as Singapore, which have implemented open-loop ticketing systems, which reduces friction for commuters, allowing them to use various cashless modes of payment. The newly launched Automated Fare Collection System enables faster, easier journeys for MRT-3 passengers via a tap-in and tap-out method through multiple modes of payment: QR, mobile NFC, and debit/credit cards. "This is just the beginning. We're working on this to make all turnstile carousels [equipped] with this option for various payment modes," said Transport Secretary Vince Dizon, adding the digital payment solutions will soon be available in other rail lines — the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, and other mass transport systems. "One of our core mandates is to make payments safer, secure, efficient, reliable, and more accessible to all. Today, those two goals come together," said Walter Wassmer, member of the central bank's Monetary Board. To help ensure the success of this initiative, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said they have been working to enhance internet connectivity at MRT-3, allowing commuters to access the GCash app whenever. "We're so proud and excited to finally launch this service in partnership with the government," said Martha Sazon, President & CEO of Mynt, the holding company of GCash. "Before, people would line up as early as 4:30 am just to buy a ticket. I hope that with this project, we can help them make their commute faster and more convenient." About GCash GCash is the Philippines' #1 Finance Super App and Largest Cashless Ecosystem. Through the GCash App, users can easily purchase prepaid airtime; pay bills via partner billers nationwide; send and receive money anywhere in the Philippines, even to other bank accounts; purchase from over 6 million partner merchants and social sellers; and get access to savings, credit, loans, insurance and invest money, and so much more, all at the convenience of their smartphones. Its mobile wallet operations are handled by G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mynt, the first and only $5 billion unicorn in the Philippines. GCash is a staunch supporter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly UN SDGs 5,8,10, and 13, which focus on safety & security, financial inclusion, diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, respectively.
