Chris Tarrant reveals heartbreaking reason he left TV career after 52 years

Metro6 hours ago

Chris Tarrant has revealed the heartbreaking reason he left the TV world after starring on some of the country's biggest shows for 52 years.
The legendary host, 78, is best known for presenting iconic kids show Tiswas between 1974 and 1981 and quiz series Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for 16 years.
Tarrant began moving away from regular TV work in the 2010s, quitting Millionaire in 2014 – but he did still present the docuseries Extreme Railway Journeys between 2012 and 2020.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, however, his face has been seen less and less, with his last appearance coming in 2021 documentary Britain Biggest 1970s Hits.
In 2025, Tarrant has now given a detailed but heartbreaking explanation for why he's now retired from the glitz and glamour of primetime programmes.
Speaking to MailOnline, he reflected on decision to leave it all behind: '52 years is a long time on air. I loved what I did. I had a really good time.
'But I went to the funerals of five really good mates, who were about the same age as me, and I thought, 'I don't know how long I've got left in life, but I don't want to spend it locked away in a studio.''
One of those friends was the late Sir Terry Wogan, the legendary Irish TV and radio broadcaster who died in 2016 – he was 77, a year younger than Tarrant is now.
Continuing his story, Tarrant said he briefly considered retiring in 2014 after suffering a mini-stroke, which left him needing long-term speech therapy to get back to his best.
'I had a lucky escape. I can chat to you now, [my body] is working. But I did have to have speech therapy. It took a while to get everything back. It was scary.'
In 2020, he told The Mirror he was stepping down because he no longer needed the money and wanted to spend more time with his family in retirement.
'I've stopped working. Lockdown started to get everything in a bit perspective and I thought, 'I've done this thing for 50 years. I don't need the money.' More Trending
'Without sounding silly, why am I still doing this? I've done lots of things that I've been putting off instead that have been great.'
He continued: 'I went on safari with my two eldest grandkids. [Wife] Jane and I have just come back from Borneo. I've just come back from photographing bears in Alaska. Why the hell would I go for work for?'
Despite publicly announcing his retirement just before Christmas last year, Tarrant revealed that the offers were still coming in from TV producers.

Chris confessed that he 'turned down' hosting The Masked Singer and had no further desire to front another travel show as he didn't want to be told 'where to go, what to do and, you know, schedules'.

Andy Carroll and Lou Teasdale completely smitten at Glasto after holiday bust-up

EXCLUSIVE: Professional footballer Andy Carroll and his girlfriend Lou Teasdale have been seen looking 'loved up' at Glastonbury after rumours of a bust up during a holiday in Greece Smitten couple Andy Carroll and Lou Teasdale have been spotted strolling around Glastonbury on the second day of the festival. The couple looked relaxed in some classic Glastonbury ensembles as they walked through the VIP area of the festival. Professional footballer Andy, 36, wore his long locks down while Lou, 41, opted for a relax outfit consisting of a lose t-shirt and some baggy denim shorts. ‌ A source told The Mirror: "Lou and Andy appeared to put their holiday spat behind them. They were very touchy feely and he couldn't stop popping his arm around here". ‌ It comes after the couple admitted they were spoken to by police following a row between the couple on the Greek island of Mykonos. The pair, who have been dating since last year following the footballer's split with the mum of his three kids, Billi Mucklow, revealed they'd had a "heated discussion" while on the party island, but that things had been "blown out of proportion". Andy was reportedly questioned about a bust-up he'd had with Lou at a packed beachside restaurant and then at their hotel. One worker at the Nikolus Tavern said of the first argument: 'We recognised him as the footballer Andy Carroll immediately. He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' Reports claimed that police arrived and took the former West Ham ace, who was "very calm" to one side for a chat. He was later allowed to return to Lou, who is a well-known celebrity hairstylist. However, hours later police were reportedly called again by staff after reports of damage to the couple's room at a £500-a-night boutique hotel. Officers are said to have escorted Andy to a local station for questioning but no arrests were made. Another source claimed Lou did not stay with her boyfriend that night. ‌ They said: "After the restaurant episode, there was another incident at the hotel. This time, the footballer went to the police station. We know the woman stayed somewhere else that night.' Meanwhile, a British holidaymaker who reportedly spotted the pair while out for a stroll accused Andy of being "very drunk" adding that he shouted at Lou: "I'm done with us!" ‌ Responding to the reports, Andy and Lou admitted that the police were called following their "heated discussion", however they insisted things had been "blown out of proportion", issuing a joint statement which read: "Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. ‌ 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested, and no one was charged with anything. "We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together, and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.'

'Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez got married before Venice wedding celebration'

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez may have kicked off a lavish three-day celebration in Venice on Thursday, but behind the scenes, the couple has already tied the knot - weeks ago. According to a well-placed insider involved in the event planning: 'They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law.' Though this week's festivities have been widely billed as their wedding, the source revealed it's purely ceremonial. 'When they were planning the wedding, they were clear about the fact that they were already secretly married,' the insider said. Because the legal marriage has already occurred, there was no need for a license in Italy. 'There is no application for a wedding licence from the couple because it was not required. Whatever happens at the wedding on Friday, it will not be a wedding. Under Italian law, it will not be a wedding celebration, any vows said or rings exchanged will have no legal meaning," they told Mail Online. The same source added that Bezos himself confirmed the legal union and noted the pair had arranged a prenuptial agreement to safeguard his $244 billion fortune. Bezos and Sánchez reportedly married privately in the U.S., well before the high-profile Venetian celebration began.

Huge Emmerdale episodes on the way as cast told to prepare for night shoots

Emmerdale's Natalie J Robb and Mike Parr teased some massive scenes on the way in the coming months, with cast on the ITV soap told to prepare for 'a lot of night shoots' There's huge scenes guaranteed on Emmerdale in the coming months, with one star teasing multiple night shoots have been advised. As the ITV soap prepares to film the big crossover with Coronation Street, set to air early 2026, cast members are about to find out who is involved and what happens. With filming and planning taking place months in advance, cast members on both soaps are soon to learn which characters will feature in the epic soap twist. ‌ Plenty of stars from both soaps are desperate to be involved, all hoping their characters will be present in the milestone episodes. While only one episode will feature the crossover, the impact will be felt for the entire week and then some. ‌ As the plans are finalised, cast members will soon prepare to film the big scenes and the storylines surrounding them. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Emmerdale's Moira Dingle actress Natalie J Robb shared her hopes to take part. Not only that, but she confirmed that huge episodes were guaranteed, as there were "a lot of night shoots" planned. With night shoots often come dramatic and blockbuster scenes. We do know there will be a massive stunt, so it's likely this is why the night filming has been agreed. Cast members will have to prepare for the big scenes, with Natalie hinting at what's ahead. She told us: "It is really exciting. It is the first time it has ever been done I think the audience will like it. We have to trust the writers. There is gonna be a lot night shoots." Natalie went on: "We don't know any of the stories or what characters are involved just yet, but I'm hoping to be part of it." Ross Barton actor Mike Parr then pointed out that some Emmerdale and Corrie actors have done both soaps. ‌ Referencing his co-star Oliver Farnworth who plays villain John Sugden, he joked about whether the Corrie characters would recognise him, or if John was still Oliver's Corrie character Andy. He said: "Is he still that character in that one or did he die? "There's so much room for what could happen and the ways it can go. I am so glad it's happening and everyone wants to be involved, but not everyone can be. It's exciting times but nobody knows anything yet." It comes as the pair also teased "danger" on the way following next week's arrival of new villain Ray. Mike said of actor Joe's casting: "I grew up watching that guy. One of my friends were also up for the part and I wanted to support him, but when I found out Joe had got it I knew he would be good. It's good, it's exciting." Natalie also had her say, before hinting that Moira's brother Mackenzie could be at risk. She told us: "He is good. It's all in the eyes. He's very menacing and very scary. There is going to be a lot of danger, but it's good. It's shaken it up a bit."
