'Harlan Coben's best yet': Lazarus is the 'gripping psychological horror' series full of eerie twists
ICYMI: novelist Harlan Coben has been behind some of the biggest thriller shows of recent years, with his books being adapted into hits like Missing You, Fool Me Once and the forthcoming I Will Find You. He also has an amazing new project in the works which is said to debut in autumn 2025. While the author's novels have been repeatedly adapted for television, this time, he's written a show directly for the small screen. "I thought, 'I could write this as a novel, but I'm seeing it as a TV series'. It's a little more of a ghost story, very visual," Coben told Radio Times. Intrigued? We thought so. Here's what you need to know. Lazarus was announced in February 2024, with Variety reporting that Amazon had ordered a limited series written by Coben and screenwriter Danny Brocklehurst, from the Fool Me Once team. Coben is under a deal at Netflix that covers a number of his novels, but as this project with Amazon is original material, it doesn't appear to fall under the scope of that deal. The official synopsis of the thriller reveals: "Lazarus follows a man who returns home after his father's death and begins to have disturbing experiences that can't be explained. "He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father's death and his sister's murder 25 years ago..." Intrigued? We thought so! The cast of Lazarus is already looking seriously juicy, with Bill Nighy and Peaky Blinders' Sam Claflin attached. The series is due to be released in the autumn of 2025, but an official date has yet to be released.

'Sucked in from the Very 1st Episode': Why Is 'The Hunting Wives' So Popular?
Netflix's 'The Hunting Wives' has found its place on the platform's Top 10 list. Since its July 21 release, the television series, based on the novel by May Cobb, has evolved into a cultural moment, racking up over 11 million views on Netflix, per Deadline. On TikTok, thousands of viewers are sharing their thoughts on show's roller coaster of twists and soap-level drama. Where did all this buzz come from? Here's what to know about the show's appeal and the phenomenon it sparked. What is 'The Hunting Wives' about? Originally created for Starz, the erotic thriller was acquired by Netflix. "The Hunting Wives" follows PR exec Sophie O'Neil (Brittany Snow) as she moves from Boston to East Texas with her architect husband Graham (Evan Jonigkeit). She immediately finds herself out of place in an inner circle of wealthy Southern housewives who call themselves the "Hunting Wives." These women seemingly couldn't be more different from Sophie: Not only does the elite clique embrace gun culture, but also they also adopt an unabashed stay-at-home lifestyle that is foreign to her. When Sophie asks her new friends what they do for work, they emphasize that their job is to 'wife.' Along with culture shock, Sophie grapples with her looming dark past through frequent flashbacks. Sophie eventually becomes enthralled by the group's queen bee, Margo Banks (Malin Åkerman), the wife of Graham's boss, Jed (Dermot Mulroney), an oil tycoon running for the governor of Texas. Margo takes Sophie under her wing, and their friendship quickly escalates into a steamy affair. A throughline of the show is its twisty murder plot. After local teenager Abby (Madison Wolfe) is found dead, Sophie finds herself inconveniently tangled in the mystery. As the town searches for the culprit, its residents cultivate messy love triangles and secret relationships on the side. Why has 'The Hunting Wives' become such a phenomenon? Part of the appeal of the 'The Hunting Wives' is that it goes there — all manner of daring places. Each character is shamelessly committed to making jaw-dropping decisions. Take, for example, Margo's affair with an 18-year-old high school student who also happens to be Abby's boyfriend. Or Sophie's decision to rashly secure a firearm, a choice that backfires after she blacks out on the night of Abby's death ... and her gun turns out to be the murder weapon. Then, of course, there are the show's multiple murders and frequent extramarital escapades. 'The Hunting Wives' consistently prioritizes steamy scenes over sensible plotting or nuanced characters, juicy twists over deep emotions or big ideas. It might all be incredibly frustrating, if it were not also so wildly entertaining,' The Hollywood Reporter writes of the show. The show's hype is not necessarily due to its quality: Some fans on Reddit point out, Margo's wig looks (perhaps purposefully) unrealistic, and there may be more than a few plot holes. Instead, the series' shock factor is what makes it bingeable. 'Look, it isn't Emmy award winning TV. The acting only ranges slightly fair. The characters are terrible people,' one Reddit user writes. 'But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sucked in from the very first episode.' 'Everything has been said regarding it being the perfect summer sleazy schlockfest we all love,' another adds. In addition to its wild plot twists, the show's depiction of Margo and Sophie's queer relationship has led to chatter. Them, an LGBTQ+ publication, writes that 'The Hunting Wives' might be 'the gayest show of the year." Many fans have posted their reactions to Margo and Sophie's relationship, crediting the show's suggestive scenes for their sexual awakenings or awkward watch moments with family members. 'With all of the attention the show is receiving, viewer reactions have proved feverish, with fans across party lines gamely questioning their sexuality after witnessing Margo's effects on Sophie,' NBC Out writes of this phenomenon. Watchers also have also found themselves enthralled by the series' political message. 'When you first start watching the show, it's just a very fun, campy romp… It really feels like they are glamorizing this certain type of lifestyle. But, in actuality, it is such a scathing review of the hypocrisy of the nuclear family (and) God fearing Republicans,' one reviewer theorizes on TikTok. 'Perhaps the show's most intriguing wrinkle involves incorporating just enough political references to feel like a satire of Southern-fried hypocrisy,' Slate writes. This layer adds, for some, enough to turn the show from a beach read on screen to something a little deeper. However, not everyone is a fan — some criticize the show for being too vulgar or underdeveloped. But the show's blend of lustful romance, a messy murder plot and perhaps a bit of political humor is what has many fans knocking on Netflix's door for another salacious installment. 5 best dark thriller movies to stream on Netflix
I love the thriller genre, but have a particular soft spot for dark thrillers. These movies, which often incorporate horror elements, explore bleak situations, humanity at its most savage and disturbing violence. While none of the movies on this list could ever be considered 'light entertainment,' if you're looking for a thriller that will give you chills, have you wincing in shock at the hardship endured by their lead characters and are packed full of unexpected twists, these five are essential. Plus, all of them are available on the world's biggest streaming service, Netflix. From a twisting trip that explores the dangers of obsession to a period piece that proves not all miracles are what they appear, these are the five best dark thrillers on Netflix worth watching right now. One of Netflix's biggest international success stories, you may have heard of 'The Platform' before. It's a streaming original that deserves its level of reputation and recognition because it pairs together an intriguing sci-fi idea with a fascinating exploration of human nature, and for those just after a descent into some savage place, you'll find exactly what you're craving. 'The Platform' is set in a future prison that is comprised of a series of individual levels arranged in a seemingly never-ending tower block. Every day, a concrete platform of food is slowly lowered down the block, with the people at the top eating like royalty, and those down below left with only scraps. We focus on a man named Goreng (Iván Massagué) as he attempts to survive this dystopian jail. I should also give a fair warning that you'll want to skip the movie snacks for this one, because several scenes will turn your stomach. Watch "The Platform" on Netflix now Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. While plenty of dark thrillers contain horror elements, 'The Ritual' is not one for viewers who can't tolerate the odd jump scare. This supernatural folk thriller is seriously spooky, but it's also rich with well-developed, if not always likable, characters. Plus, the eerie setting of the Swedish wilderness adds suspense and dread to the proceedings. Six months after the death of their friend in a robbery gone wrong, four middle-aged men reunite to hike through the Scandinavian mountains in their friend's memory. Making the foolish decision to step off the beaten path and take a 'shortcut' through the forest, they quickly become lost and believe that someone, or something, is stalking them. Just be sure to select the right movie. There's another movie called 'The Ritual' released earlier this year, which is a complete skip. Watch "The Ritual" on Netflix now The mark of a good dark thriller is when it makes you feel genuinely uneasy, and 'Calibre' does that often. This small-scale but intense movie had me sitting bolt upright on my sofa, and racking my own brain in an attempt to figure out how the two lead characters were going to get out of the terrifying predicament they find themselves in. "Calibre" is completely bone-chilling, and I love it. Vaughn (Jack Lowden) and Marcus (Martin McCann) are two childhood best friends traveling to the remote Scottish Highlands for a weekend away. The duo plan to go hunting, but while roaming the forest for game, they make a terrible mistake, and the consequences of their actions spiral completely out of control. Yes, that's an extremely vague plot write-up, but I'm deliberately holding my cards close to the chest, because 'Calibre' is best enjoyed with as little known ahead of time (I would even recommend skipping the trailer). Watch "Calibre" on Netflix now 'The Perfection' is one of the most skin-crawling dark thrillers I've ever seen. And I mean that quite literally, there's a highly disturbing sequence where a character believes bugs are bursting out of her arm. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, in this warped trip that goes to several bleak and very gruesome places. It's not a thriller movie for the faint of heart. Charlotte Willmore (Allison Williams) is a gifted cellist who is forced to leave her prestigious music academy to care for her sick mother. Returning to the fold after her mother's death, Charlotte meets Lizzie (Logan Browning), another musical prodigy, who has effectively replaced her as the star pupil and personal favorite of Anton (Steven Weber), the school's head. What follows is a nightmare ordeal for both of them, but I won't spoil any more, as there are plenty of surprising twists to discover. Watch "The Perfection" on Netflix now One of Florence Pugh's most overlooked movies, 'The Wonder,' is a period thriller based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue. At its core is a compelling mystery, and as it progresses, the darker side of faith comes to the surface as Pugh's character, an English nurse named Elizabeth, struggles to convince the residents of a small Irish town that what they believe to be a miracle might not be quite what it seems. Elizabeth is sent to the rural village to monitor a young girl (Kíla Lord Cassidy) who, it is claimed, hasn't eaten in four months. Far from malnourished, the girl appears to be in good health and claims she is surviving by consuming 'manna from Heaven.' Despite her family's insistence that this is a miracle from above, Elizabeth seeks to discover the truth of the situation. 'The Wonder' is a slow-burn dramatic thriller anchored by a predictably strong turn from Pugh. Watch "The Wonder" on Netflix now
