Madras High Court seeks report from TN, centre on illegal immigrants
A vacation bench comprising justices M Dhandapani and R Sakthivel gave the direction on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by KK Ramesh of Madurai seeking a direction to the government to take action against foreign nationals, especially those from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Africa, who are illegally staying in India.
Citing media reports, petitioner claimed that nearly 46,000 foreign nationals are illegally staying in Tamil Nadu despite expiry of their visa. He alleged that such persons collude with political party leaders and involve in illegal activities like transporting drugs, weapons, etc. He also cited the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and sought the above direction. He further sought an interim direction to cancel the registration of political parties which support terrorists.
The judges orally observed that though the court issued a series of directions a few years ago to tackle the issue, the government has not taken any steps and remains a silent spectator. They issued notice to the Union Ministries of Home and External Affairs, Election Commission of India, State Home department and Director General of Police and directed them to file a report at the next hearing on June 9.
Notice issued to Sivaji Ganesan's sons on appeal against lifting of bungalow's attachment order
Chennai: The Madras HC on Thursday ordered notice to late actor Sivaji Ganesan's sons Prabhu and Ramkumar, and others, on an appeal filed by a film financing company challenging a single judge's order to recall the order for attachment of parts of late actor Sivaji Ganesan's T Nagar bungalow in a money dispute case. A vacation bench of justices N Mala and G Arul Murugan directed the respondents, including the late actor's sons and grandson Dusshyanth Ramkumar, to file counter-affidavit to the appeal moved by Dhanabakkiam Enterprises by June 3, 2025. However, the bench refused to stay the operation of the single judge's order and adjourned the hearing to June 3.

Madurai Bench of Madras HC: Table action plan for property tax reassessment
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Madurai collector and corporation commissioner to coordinate with each other and submit an 'action plan' on the steps to be taken to verify the property tax assessments of all immovable properties in Madurai city. A bench of justices S M Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan gave the direction on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by an AIADMK councillor of the 83rd Ward of the civic body, T Ravi. The PIL sought CBI investigation into the alleged Rs 200-crore scam in which bribes are said to have been taken to lower the valuation of properties. In the previous hearing on Tuesday, the bench had directed the Madurai Corporation Commissioner to form special teams to verify the accuracy of property tax assessments made in respect of all immovable properties in Madurai city limits. When the case was heard again on Wednesday, a report was submitted by the corporation commissioner stating that a committee has been formed under the supervision of the deputy commissioner of Madurai Corporation. The committee includes a revenue officer (in charge), assistant revenue officers of the five zones, two assistant programmers, a revenue assistant (in charge), junior engineer and an assistant executive engineer.

Form teams to verify property tax assessments in Madurai: Madurai Bench of Madras HC
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Madurai Corporation Commissioner to form special teams to verify the accuracy of property tax assessments made in respect of all immovable properties in Madurai city limits. A bench of justices S M Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan gave the direction on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by an AIADMK councillor of the 83rd Ward of the civic body, T Ravi, seeking CBI investigation into the alleged Rs 200-crore scam in which bribes are said to have been taken to lower the valuation of properties. During the hearing on Tuesday, additional public prosecutor T Senthil Kumar submitted that as of August 9, 15 persons including an assistant commissioner and assistant revenue officer have been arrested. The special investigation team of police personnel is in the process of obtaining data from the director of municipal administration about the valuation of the immovable properties in Madurai city corporation limits and the investigation is being done in all angles. Since the petitioner submitted that the undervaluation of buildings for assessing the property tax also needs to be addressed while investigating the above scam, the judges directed the corporation commissioner to constitute special teams to verify the accuracy of the property tax assessments made by the staff and officials of Madurai Corporation and thereafter take appropriate action to ensure that correct assessment of property tax is made in respect of every immovable property in Madurai city limits in accordance with the relevant legal provisions. Additional Advocate General Veera Kathiravan said he will get necessary instructions from the commissioner, form the required number of teams and submit a report to the court in the next hearing on Wednesday (August 20).

The Madras High Court on Tuesday heard a petition seeking a CBI investigation into an illegal kidney sale racket, citing inaction by state PIL, filed by advocate Saktheeswaran of Paramakudi, highlighted the exploitation of poor workers from powerloom units and dyeing factories in Pallipalayam, Namakkal to the petition, middlemen, medical professionals, and hospital authorities coerced these workers into 'donating' kidneys illegally, offering Rs 5 to 10 lakh per organ. The act, the petitioner said, violates the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, The petitioner claimed the Tamil Nadu government had not taken proper action and questioned whether a fair probe could be conducted by state police, alleging political involvement. He urged that the case be transferred to the CBI, similar to the Thiruppuvanam Ajith Kumar custodial death claimed that Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Tiruchi were found to have committed serious medical malpractices and kidney thefts. He also alleged that both hospitals were connected to political figures belonging to the ruling SM Subramaniam and Arul Murugan expressed shock over the revelations.'It is barbaric for doctors to remove organs from patients and sell them for personal gain. The government has a duty to protect the right to life of poor and vulnerable people,' the bench court directed the Health Secretary and the Director of Rural Health Services to submit a report detailing actions taken regarding the kidney trade and measures to prevent such illegal activities.
