Mumbai crime branch nab Rajasthan duo running online ‘lost love' scam; ₹16 lakh worth of gold cash recovered

Mumbai: The city crime branch unmasked a pair of smooth-talking fraudsters from Rajasthan who preyed on heartbreak and hope, weaving an elaborate online scam that promised to reunite lost lovers—for a steep price. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused allegedly targeted individuals distressed over broken relationships, luring them into paying for expensive rituals under the guise of removing "obstacles in love". According to police, on Aug 1, a 52-year-old woman from South Mumbai lodged a complaint at Pydhonie police station. She reported that an unknown intruder entered her home through a partially open door and stole 129gm of gold and nearly Rs 3.2 lakh in cash, totalling a value of Rs 16.2 lakh. Pydhonie police registered an FIR of theft, and Unit 2 of the crime branch started a parallel probe. As crime branch unit 2 dug deeper, an unexpected twist emerged. Investigators learned that the complainant's daughter, recently estranged from her partner, stumbled upon an Instagram profile named 'Irfan Khanji', awash with alluring promises like "Lost love found in 24 hours" and "Get your love back." Drawn in by the hope of mending her relationship, she shared her number, setting in motion a con worthy of a screenplay. Soon, she was contacted by a man posing as a cleric. The man convinced her that mystical rituals could dissolve the barriers to her romance—if she could provide the necessary items. His shopping list read like a treasure inventory: Silver pots, gold lamps, gold flies, potted plants, and even gold nails. Payments were funnelled into shadowy third-party bank accounts, and, in the final act, the accused travelled to Mumbai to collect the gold straight from her home. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During the course of the investigation, police stumbled upon a few suspected mobile numbers with which the complainant was in touch. Police zeroed in on two numbers, which were found to be of men claiming to be spiritual gurus. "Based on technical analysis, when we questioned why she was in contact with these two men and on sustained questioning, she broke down and narrated the real story. We traced the suspects to Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and arrested Vikas Manoj Kumar Meghwal (22) and Manoj Shyamsundar Nagpal (30)," said an officer. During interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime, and police recovered all stolen property—129gm of gold worth Rs 13 lakh and Rs 3.18 lakh in cash. Investigators also found that the accused similarly cheated young women in Haryana and Delhi. Further, police noted the presence of active gangs in Sri Ganganagar that sell Instagram accounts with followers, along with linked bank accounts and SIM cards, which are then used in such fraud schemes. Police have urged young people to be cautious of such online offers, particularly those exploiting emotional distress.

Pakistani social media influencer defends husband who threatened to rape air hostess

The wife of Salman Iftikhar, the executive recently sentenced for threatening a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant, has come forward to defend her husband, attributing his actions to mental health struggles. Abeer Iftikhar, social media influencer from Pakistan.(Instagram-abeeriftekhar) Abeer Rizvi, a social media influencer based in Pakistan, shared her thoughts on Instagram days after Iftikhar was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his behaviour during a flight in 2023. 'Mental health is not a joke. Behind every story, there's pain you don't see,' Rizvi wrote on Instagram. 'Before judging, try understanding. Be kind. Be human,' she added. Iftikhar, the founder of recruitment firm Staffing Match, was travelling from London to Lahore with his wife and their three children when he became intoxicated and disruptive on February 7, 2023, reported The New York Post. During the flight's first meal service, Iftikhar allegedly drank champagne in front of his children and behaved in a disorderly manner, including reaching over the counter to take ice with his hands, which led cabin crew to ask him to return to his seat, the report added. When asked to comply, Iftikhar launched into a tirade against flight attendants, making racist and threatening remarks, and later identified the hotel where the lead flight attendant, Angie Walsh, was staying, issuing further threats. According to the Mirror, he said she 'will be dead,' and added, 'The floor of your hotel will be blown up and it will disappear. You will be dragged by your hair from your room and gang-raped and set on fire.' The report said that the officials managed to calm Iftikhar, and he was allowed to leave the flight in Pakistan without police involvement. Iftikhar was arrested at his home in England in March 2024. Following his arrest, his company, Staffing Match reportedly went bankrupt, owing $22.8 million. During his court hearing, Iftikhar admitted to making threats and racially harassing Walsh but denied harassment charges related to a physical altercation with a male flight attendant. Walsh testified that the incident left her traumatised and forced her to take 14 months off work. 'I am a strong, brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job,' she said in a victim impact statement. 'I have flown with Virgin Atlantic for 37 years and faced many challenges, but this incident broke me,' she added. Virgin Atlantic praised Walsh for her courage in speaking out. The New York Post quoted a spokesperson saying, 'The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive or abusive behaviour on board. We support Angie fully and commend her bravery.' Salman Iftikhar's wife, Abeer Rizvi, has not publicly commented on his jail sentence.

Influencer Wife Defends Pakistan Man Who Threatened To Rape Air Hostess

New Delhi: Former British executive Salman Iftikhar, who has been jailed for threatening to kill and rape a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant, has received support from his wife. Abeer Rizvi, who is an influencer, has attributed Iftikhar's conduct to mental health struggles. Rizvi posted a series of messages on Instagram on August 7, urging compassion for her husband, just days after his sentencing. Rizvi lives in Pakistan and has more than half a million followers on Instagram and TikTok. 'Mental health is not a joke. Behind every story, there's pain you don't see,' she wrote, according to The New York Post. 'Before judging, try understanding. Be kind. Be human.' Iftikhar, the founder of recruitment firm Staffing Match, is married to Rizvi and another woman, Erum Salman, the Daily Mail reported. Iftikhar's other wife lives in the UK, according to The New York Post report. The outburst occurred on February 7, 2023, during a Virgin Atlantic flight from London to Lahore. Iftikhar was travelling in first class with his three children. According to the Mirror, he began drinking heavily during the flight, grabbing ice with his bare hands from the galley before being told to return to his seat. What followed was a tirade aimed at cabin crew member, Angie Walsh. 'Don't tell me what to do,' Iftikhar shouted, as reported by the Mirror. He then went on to call Walsh 'racist' and said, 'I know where you are from in Cardiff.' Iftikhar then attempted to attack another crew member, a male attendant Tommy Merchant, before issuing threats towards Walsh. He even identified the hotel where she would be staying in Lahore. According to the Mirror, he said she 'will be dead,' and added, 'The floor of your hotel will be blown up and it will disappear. You will be dragged by your hair from your room and gang-raped and set on fire.' Crew members managed to get Iftikhar back into his seat, and he disembarked without arrest in Pakistan. British police later detained him at his home in Iver, England, on March 16, 2024. At Isleworth Crown Court on August 5, Iftikhar admitted threatening to kill Walsh and racially harassing her but denied harassment in relation to Merchant. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison. Walsh said she was left traumatised and unable to work for 14 months. 'I am a strong, brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job,' she told the court in a victim impact statement, reported Mirror. 'Never in my entire career flying for 37 years have I not been sure what to do. I have had the best career in the world for 37 years. But he has taken that away from me.' Virgin Atlantic expressed support for Walsh's courage in testifying. 'The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority…We will not hesitate to seek prosecution for those individuals who cause disruption on board through unacceptable behaviour,' a spokesperson said in a statement, according to the Mirror.
