'Bond King' Bill Gross made millions betting against GameStop. He says the stock is behaving like bitcoin now.

Bill Gross says he's steering clear of the latest crop of meme stocks for now, despite making millions of dollars betting against GameStop and AMC in the past.
The billionaire investor told Business Insider he had "no interest" in Opendoor, Kohl's, American Eagle, and other stocks whose prices spiked as buzz on Reddit and other social media spurred retail traders to pile in.
Day traders have Microsoft and Meta "to play with for now," Gross said. The tech titans are up 30% and 25% respectively this year because of AI excitement.
Gross says GameStop isn't acting like a meme stock
Gross — known as the "Bond King" for growing fixed-income titan PIMCO's flagship Total Return Fund to $270 billion over nearly 30 years — said the stock that started it all, GameStop, is "not behaving like a meme" and is "much less volatile" than before.
He added he still viewed it as a "good candidate for option selling."
He added that the stock "seems to mimic bitcoin," the most valuable cryptocurrency, known for its volatility and passionate fanbase.
Bitcoin's price fell by a quarter between early January and early April this year, but has rallied to record highs of above $110,000. GameStop announced its first bitcoin purchase in late May, securing 4,710 tokens worth around $537 million at current prices.
Adjusted for a stock split in 2022, GameStop soared from around $1 in the summer of 2020 to a peak intraday price of $121 on January 28, 2021. It has traded within a much tighter range of around $20 to $35 over the past 12 months.
It followed a similar trajectory to bitcoin by rising sharply in the fourth quarter of 2024, slumping this spring, and rebounding through early June.
However, GameStop then fell after disappointing first-quarter earnings and dilutive share sales, whereas bitcoin kept climbing to fresh highs in July.
Gross bet against GameStop by selling call options at the height of its meme-stock surge in January 2021. An options contract gives the buyer the right to purchase or sell a stock at an agreed price within a set period. Sellers wager these contracts will expire worthless, and they can simply keep the premium paid by the buyer.
Gross was $15 million in the red, losing sleep at one point as GameStop kept climbing, but he doubled down. He later said he made between $15 million and $20 million betting against GameStop and AMC.
"I knew I had an advantage over Reddit and the boys," Gross has said about his original meme-stock wagers, as he had access to real-time options and volatility data on his Bloomberg terminal.
Gross has been a vocal skeptic of meme stocks for years, calling them "lottery tickets" and describing buyers of overpriced options as "fish at the poker table." He's also said that each buying frenzy ends with a "musical chair, me-first exit" from the stock.
Besides GameStop and AMC, Gross also sold put and call options on Trump Media in the spring of 2024 to cash in on the craze around the president's stock.

Verizon scrambles to keep angry customers after cutting discounts

Last week, Verizon (VZ) ignited uproar from customers after it pulled the plug on several beloved discounts at a time when phone bills are creeping up in price. Several Verizon customers took to social media to flag that they received emails from the phone carrier warning them that their loyalty discounts will be removed from their accounts next month. These discounts, which usually ranged between $10 and $40, were renewable and were provided to keep customers from switching providers. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Many customers were livid about the change; some even threatened to cut ties with the company. It is no surprise that customers were upset, since higher prices for phone services are becoming a growing reality. Related: Verizon revokes generous offers, angering customers According to a recent report from Doxo, the average amount of money 94% of Americans spent on phone bills per month last year is $121, a 2% increase from what they spent monthly in 2023. The move from Verizon comes after it issued several price hikes for its phone plans. In March last year, Verizon increased the prices of its 5G Start, 5G Play More, 5G Get More, and 5G Do More plans by an extra $4 a month. Then, in January this year, it raised the monthly prices for myPlan and New Verizon Plan accounts due to "rising operational costs." Image source: Mordant/Bloomberg via Getty Images Amid the backlash over the upcoming removal of loyalty discounts, Verizon customers recently took to social media to flag that the company is trying to make amends. According to a recent Reddit post, a Verizon customer revealed that the company randomly sent them a pop-up through the My Verizon app offering them $20 off per phone line for 12 months. "Just got a pop up from my Verizon app saying for a limited time every active phone line on your account is eligible for a $20/mo discount for 12 months," wrote the customer in the post. "Tap to reach a rep. Too bad I'll be leaving very soon." Related: Verizon discontinues free customer perk from phone plans In the comment section under the post, other Verizon customers said that they received the same offer after they requested a transfer pin (a code given to customers planning to leave and join another phone carrier) through the My Verizon app. "I got offered $20 per month for 1 year as I am trying to port my number away. Still leaving though," wrote one customer in the comment section. "I got that same offer 2 minutes after I requested a transfer pin. We're still leaving because (of) various reasons, including getting first responder speed/discount, but it may be a tactic for people to try as it definitely was for them trying to keep our service," wrote another customer. The influx of customers planning to leave the company comes after a Reddit post earlier this month sparked speculation that Verizon plans to increase prices and remove several discounts on Sept. 1. It stated that Verizon was planning to raise its device activation fees from $35 to $40, which the company later confirmed on its website. However, the change appears to be immediate. The post also said that the phone carrier will be increasing the monthly price of its tablet plan by $5. Some customers have flagged on social media that they recently received an email about this change. More Telecom News: Verizon's push to make switching harder for customers hits a snagT-Mobile announces generous offer for conflicted customersAmazon pulls the plug on a free service for customers In addition, Verizon's monthly Administrative and Telco Recovery fee will allegedly increase from $3.50 to $3.78 per line for voice customers and from $1.60 to $3.97 per line for customers with data-only plans. To add fuel to the fire, Verizon also announced a week ago that customers on its 5G Get More and 5G Play More plans will no longer have access to free Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass subscriptions, starting Sept. 22. The last thing Verizon needs is more customers pulling the plug on phone service. In the second quarter of this year, Verizon lost about 51,000 postpaid phone customers. Also, its wireless postpaid phone churn (the number of customers who cut phone service) remained flat at 0.9% compared to the previous quarter. During an earnings call on July 21, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Tony Skiadas said that the company is doubling down on improving its customers' "loyalty and retention" by providing them with more personalized support and value. "We have taken a series of actions to address our elevated churn," said Skiadas. "On June 24th, we launched initiatives designed to improve the customer experience, including leveraging AI for more personalized support. In addition, we continue to enhance our value proposition and build customer loyalty through the best value guarantee. We provide exclusive access to the best events and experiences, and our Refresh app helps customers maximize the value of their plans." DETAILS OF THE CASE: According to the lawsuit, throughout the Class Period, defendants made false and misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) changes in Google Search's algorithm and features like AI Overview were causing users to stop their query on Google search; (2) these algorithm changes were materially different than prior instances of reduced traffic to the Reddit website; (3) defendants were aware that the increase in the query term 'Reddit' on search engines was because users were getting the sought after answer from Google Search without having to go to Reddit, and not because they intended to visit Reddit; (4) this zero-click search reality was dramatically reducing traffic to Reddit in a manner Reddit was unable to overcome in the short term; and (5) defendants, therefore, lacked a reasonable basis for its outlook on user rates and advertising revenues. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages. The crypto craze sweeping Washington and Wall Street

Earlier this year, more than 35,000 bitcoin enthusiasts descended on Las Vegas for Bitcoin 2025 – the largest-ever gathering of its kind, attracting an eclectic mix of high rollers ... and true believers. "Your goal should be to own at least one bitcoin, because by the time you retire, that can be worth 20, 30 million," said Michael Terpin. Guy Malone said, "You can't change the Bible; it changes you. The same is true of bitcoin." But everyone here seems to agree on one thing: President Donald Trump's re-election has been like hitting the jackpot. As Vice President JD Vance told the crowd, "I'm here today to say loud and clear, with President Trump, crypto finally has a champion and an ally in the White House." Once dismissed by investors, and still baffling to many Americans, cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have won over supporters from Wall Street to Washington. In July, the president signed the Genius Act, which opens the door for companies like Wal-Mart and Amazon to issue their own digital currencies. And Congress is debating another bill that, for the first time, aims to regulate cryptocurrency trading – this after the industry spent more than $167 million on behalf of crypto-friendly candidates ahead of last year's election. Asked how people should think of cryptocurrencies, Amanda Fischer, who served as a top official in the Securities and Exchange Commission during the Biden administration, replied, "You could think of it as gambling, you could think of it as a collectible, you could think of it as a type of investment. But I think what's important to understand is that crypto is highly volatile. It's highly speculative. "Crypto is often marketed to individuals as an investment opportunity that will yield them the possibility of great returns," she said. "But unlike, say, a stock, which represents a part-ownership of a company, [crypto] is not backed by any sort of business that is producing goods and services." Unlike hard currencies like the dollar or the euro, cryptocurrencies only exist online, and are issued by individuals and companies, not central banks. And yet, billions of dollars' worth of crypto are traded every day. "The number of scams, the types of scams, the sophistication of scams are so rife and plentiful that the capacity to lose your money in a crypto investment is substantially higher than if you're just investing in stocks and bonds," Fischer said. During the Biden administration, the SEC cracked down on the cryptocurrency industry. The Trump administration has changed course, dismissing the largest outstanding cases, which Fischer says leaves consumers more vulnerable. I asked, "We are seeing leaders in crypto say we want to be regulated. And there is legislation currently here in Washington underway to regulate cryptocurrency. They say they want laws passed." "They want laws that they write to be passed," said Fischer. "So, the legislation currently being considered in Washington, D.C., is written by and for the crypto industry." David Bailey, who runs the bitcoin conference and is CEO of a bitcoin holding company called Nakamoto, said, "I wish that was the case, that'd be fantastic. But no, it's not true." Like many crypto entrepreneurs, Bailey now calls Puerto Rico home. "It started because of the taxes," he said. "Now, it's like the place to do business." But the 34-year-old's real claim to fame might be his role in convincing a skeptical President Trump (who in June 2021 told Fox Business Channel that bitcoin "just seems like a scam") to go all-in on bitcoin during the 2024 campaign. Asked what he told Mr. Trump to convince him to support crypto, Bailey replied, "First off, no one convinces the president of anything. He makes up his own mind about things. A lot of people, especially in Washington, have missed how big this has gotten. And so, we made the case to the president about how many people hold this asset. He saw the opportunity that was here by embracing this industry. And I think we had a big part of swinging the election in his direction." The Federal Reserve says only eight percent of Americans have bought or held cryptocurrency in the last year, and only two percent have ever used it to buy anything. But digital assets are increasingly part of the economy. You may now be able to use crypto as collateral for a mortgage, and this past week the president signed an executive order to make it easier to hold cryptocurrencies in your 401(k). All the attention has helped drive the price of bitcoin to an all-time high, recently passing $120,000 each. Bailey says bitcoin was about $10 when he first bought it. Asked how much he bought, he replied, "Well, you know, that's something I'm not going to talk about on camera. Not enough, let's just go like that. Not enough." And as crypto's fortunes have improved, so have the president's; CBS News estimates that crypto ventures controlled by the Trump family have made up to $765 million in revenue from token sales since the fall of 2024. The White House did not respond to questions about the token sales, but in a statement told CBS News, "Neither the President nor his family have ever engaged, or will ever engage, in conflicts of interest." Most experts in government ethics believe the situation is unprecedented. I asked Bailey, "Has it ever occurred to you that maybe the president has changed his position on bitcoin and crypto because he can personally benefit from it, or his family can?" "No, absolutely not," said Bailey. "I don't think he embraced this industry to enrich himself; I think that he just sees the same potential that I see. When you get excited about an idea, you feel compelled to do something about it." And that potential is why investors are betting that crypto will soon become part of everyday life. Vice President Vance told the audience at Bitcoin 2025, "We want our fellow Americans to know that crypto and digital assets, and particularly Bitcoin, are part of the mainstream economy and are here to stay." But for Amanda Fischer, that's a gamble not worth taking. "We heard the same thing about subprime mortgages going into 2008," said Fischer. "We heard the same thing about complex financial derivatives going into the last crisis, too. These products are wonderful and there are ways to extract so much value in wealth, until they're not. And I fear that crypto is going to follow down the same path. Things are going great many times, until they're not." For more info: Story produced by Mark Hudspeth, Madeleine May and Dan Ruetenik.
