Business Highway 31 improvements begin
ATHENS, Texas (KETK) — The Texas Department of Transportation began improvements to Business Highway 31 in Athens the week of Monday.
Interstate 20 to close down starting Sunday night
This $8.1 million project takes place between Business 19 at the Square and State Loop 7, with Big Creek Construction managing operations. Nighttime work includes removing the existing road service, resurfacing, repairing the base and updating striping and signage.

Improvements are expected to be finished by winter 2025 and drivers should be cautious when traveling through milling operation work zones at night. Stay alert for lane closures and follow signage as daytime pavement stripping could affect traffic flow.

2025 State of Economy event held in Longview discuss new laws to help East Texans
LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK)– LEDCO addresses tariffs to KETK News at the 2025 State of Economy. The event was held by the Longview Chamber of Commerce to hear about how new laws will help the local economy. The nonprofit organization, Texas 2036 spoke about how additional funds to public education, water infrastructure, and healthcare will boost the economy and set the state up for success. Another push to help rural East Texans is expanding the reach for career readiness out of high school. 'To ensure and support more students becoming college and career ready. How do we ensure that they are ready for the workforce even when they're coming out of high school?' senior vice president of strategy and operations of Texas 2036, Justin Coppedge said. Coppedge said the state's economy boomed over the past few years and LEDCO president, Wayne Mansfield sees the growth in Longview. 'A lot of new construction and redevelopment occurring,' Mansfield said. Several businesses are currently expanding, still able to find employees, so I think the overall the economy is doing quite well coupled with the fact that the four school districts in our city have bond issues.' Mansfield does not believe tariffs will have a negative impact on businesses but may bring more companies. 'One positive aspect of it is that we've had a lot more inquiries from international companies looking for locations or potential locations to move out of the countries like Canada and Mexico in particular, or even Europe wanting to move their company here into Texas to get relief from the tariffs,' Mansfield said. Some people fear that foreign companies have ill intentions, but Mansfield said it gives East Texans more job opportunities. 'Generally, when companies from other countries, particularly Europe, locate in a community, they're there for the duration,' Mansfield said. 'They do not intend to leave any time. They want to come locate, become profitable, become parts of the community and stay for a long, long periods of time, ' Mansfield said.' El Paso backs grant application to help fund I-10 deck plaza project
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday, June 10, to formally support a grant application that could help fund part of the proposed Interstate 10 deck plaza. The multimillion-dollar plan is a major infrastructure project that would create a public space above the downtown stretch of the freeway. The application is for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), a federally funded, state-administered grant. If approved, it would help pay for some features of the deck plaza, such as trails, sidewalks, and green spaces. 'This is just one little puzzle piece,' District 8 Councilmember Chris Canales said. 'But I've said from the beginning, I'd support this project as long as the money comes from state, federal, or philanthropic sources.' The application is due this month, and a decision is expected in October. If awarded, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) would take the lead on construction, and the City of El Paso would assist with project management. 'If we are awarded, there are a lot of other steps that need to happen for the council to enter into an agreement to use that funding source, and that's something that would happen in the future,' Joaquin Rodriguez, director of grant-funded programs for the city, said. This isn't the only funding the city is pursuing for the deck plaza. In May, the council also submitted a separate request for $4 million through the Community Project Funding program, which goes through U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, office. That funding would help cover structural elements like retaining walls and utility infrastructure. City officials add that both funding requests are part of a larger effort to move the multimillion-dollar project forward with the goal of using outside money to make it happen. No more paper license plates: Smith County holds training for new law going into effect on July 1
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Starting on July 1, Texas will no longer be issuing paper license plates. Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 718 into law back in 2023 which will now require dealers to issue metal plates to buyers at the time of sale. READ THE BILL: Final version of HB 718 eliminating paper license plates Another major change included in the bill is that all title transactions must now be processed electronically through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicle's online webDEALER system. On Tuesday, the Smith County Tax Office hosted a free training for vehicle dealers regarding the new law. Paper tags issued prior to July 1 will remain valid until expiration. The different types of tags that will be provided are as follows: Buyer's Temporary Tags Dealer's Temporary Tags 30-Day & One-Trip Permits Dealer Agent Tags Dealer Vehicle Specific Tags Internet Down Tags Texans buying a vehicle from a dealer will receive metal license plates at the time of delivery, allowing them to immediately display the plates while awaiting their registration window sticker. When a customer sells or trades a vehicle with general issue plates, dealers will be able to remove the plates and transfer them to another vehicle of the same class sold within 10 days.
