Veteran singer Zaleha Hamid dies
Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 Text Size: A celebrated singer and entertainer in Malaysia and Singapore, she was recognised as one of the pioneers of dangdut music and was fondly known as the Queen of Dangdut. Kuala Lumpur: Veteran singer Zaleha Hamid, who rose to fame in the 1980s, died due to a lung infection at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru at about 8.30 pm today. She was 70. Her husband, Ungku Sulaiman Ungku Aziz, confirmed the news when contacted by Bernama.

Around 6 pm today, she began experiencing shortness of breath while we were feeding her milk through a tube. 'She had been bedridden since suffering a stroke in 2020,' he said. Ungku Sulaiman said her remains will be laid to rest at the Kassim Noor Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Sungai Danga, Johor Bahru after Friday prayers tomorrow. Besides her husband, Zaleha is survived by three children and six grandchildren.

The programme, held in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), was organised in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 (HKHM 2025), with a focus on showcasing patriotism through casual performances. PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA also featured cultural dance performances and an interactive session with visitors, including a patriotism-themed quiz. JAPEN director-general Julina Johan said hosting the programme at the country's main gateway allowed both locals and foreign visitors to experience Malaysian culture and witness the spirit of patriotism among its people. 'The approach this time is quite different. We are not only presenting patriotic songs but also highlighting Malaysia's cultural elements. 'We have (traditional) songs from Pahang, Perak and Perlis…we are giving them a new lease of life as we want to introduce them to visitors at KLIA Terminal 1,' she told Bernama here today. Also present were KLIA Terminal 1 operations general manager Abdul Hasman Abdul Muhimim and JAPEN Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha. Julina said PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA also served as a platform to showcase Malaysia's identity and national spirit to the world.

JBPM to feature new attractions, but maintain ‘abang sado' persona at the National Day parade
PUTRAJAYA: The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) will bring a new mobile communication post and maintain its signature persona of Abang Sado (Tough Guys or Hunky Firemen), with special appearance by the cast and crew of the Legasi: Bomba The Movie at the National Day parade on Aug 31. JBPM Director-General Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said the high-tech asset will be showcased to the public for the first time during the celebration to be held at Dataran Putrajaya. 'This vehicle functions like a mobile office in a disaster area, complete with facilities to connect the command centre, field and operation rooms. 'At the moment, the vehicle is in the final stages of construction, but I will work to ensure that it is included in the parade in Putrajaya,' he told Bernama. At the same time, Nor Hisham said that the appearance of hunky firefighters, which is often the focus every year, is maintained as part of the JBPM tradition with a more people-friendly approach through the distribution of some goodies to visitors to enliven the celebration. This year's National Day celebration is slated to be held at Dataran Putrajaya, while the Malaysia Day celebration will take place on Sept 16 in Penang with the theme Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni.
