John Mateer shares excitement about playing with Deion Burks
Deion Burks made it four games before getting injured against the Tennessee Volunteers. In his first three games of the season, Burks recorded 22 receptions for 169 yards and three touchdowns. But the injury in the Tennessee loss kept him out until the second-to-last game of the season against Missouri. In the loss to the Tigers, Burks suffered a concussion that would keep him out of the LSU game to close out the season and the Sooners held him out of the Armed Forces Bowl loss to Navy.
But in limited time, Burks showed off the ability to get open, especially in the red zone. His speed will create problems for defenses. He has a chance to be a problem in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's system this season.
The Oklahoma Sooners need a healthy Deion Burks to have a resurgent season. He was one of the more sought-after players in the 2024 transfer portal and had a huge spring game last year. Now, it's time for that potential to come to fruition.
At SEC media days, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer spoke about where Burks is at ahead of the 2025 season.
"I'm super proud of Deion," Mateer said. "He had a rough year last year, on and off the field. But he's super promising. He cares a lot about football and he cares a lot about the Sooners."
Though he didn't have the production he would have liked last year, Burks had the opportunity to go off to the NFL, or even leave in the transfer portal like Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony, Jalil Farroq, J.J. Hester, or Brenen Thompson did. But Burks opted to return to the Sooners for the 2025 season.
But Burks is now a leader for a completely remade wide receiver group. The Sooners will need his veteran presence as they welcomed seven new wide receivers this offseason and had four true freshmen returning from the 2024 season. Burks is the veteran presence in the group. The talent is there. The attitude and the effort are there. He just needs to stay healthy to realize the potential that could put Burks among the top wide receivers selected in the 2026 NFL draft.
"I'm super happy for him and proud of him, just where he's came with his body and his mind," Mateer continued. "He knows the game of football a lot better this year than he did last year. Super proud of him. I'm real excited to play with him."
The Sooners are hoping for two of their wide receivers, Javonnie Gibson and Jayden Gibson, to return for the start of the 2025 season. But it's Burks who has the biggest opportunity to thrive in Arbuckle's spread-out passing attack. His quickness, speed, and ability to create after the catch will be a problem against the SEC.

43 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No.43?
The Houston Texans are less than 50 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast. Texans Wire will daily inform you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and select the player who best represented the number during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has worn No. 43 since the inaugural season in 2002. Texans players to wear No. 43 No. 43 currently belongs to fullback Jakob Johnson. An international player, the German-born linebacker-turned-fullback has played for the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders, mostly seeing action on special teams. He was in Foxborough during the same time as Nick Caley, so a familiarity with the offense could help him carve out a role as an offensive weapon that offers more upside on punts and kickoff coverage. Since Johnson has yet to play a live game in a Texans uniform, he's not the G.O.A.T. of H-Town's No. 43. However, is there a right answer to the equation? FB Jakob Johnson (Present) LB Neville Hewitt (2021-2024) CB Shareece Wright (2018) DB Corey Moore (2015–-2017) DB Elbert Mack (2013) FB Jameel Cook (2006-2007) CB Kenny Wright (2002-2004) Best Player: Neville Hewitt A special teams favorite, Hewitt was essential in helping the Texans rebuild. Over four seasons, he filled in at linebacker, but offered more value on kickoffs, punts and kickoff return coverage. Over his four seasons, Hewitt notched 147 tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception. He won't be making it to Canton or even the Texans' Ring of Honor, but being called the best player to wear No. 43 has to mean something, right? Rookie QB Cam Ward gives tantalizing preview in practice of what he brings to the Titans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Fans clamored for Cam Ward's autograph as he worked his way along the wall at Nissan Stadium. Even with no pads and no tackling allowed, the Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback put on a show Saturday. Ward connected early and often with his new favorite wide receiver Calvin Ridley, starting with a touchdown pass in a 7-on-7 drill, and Ward's best play came on a scramble to his left and finding Ridley for a big TD catch as long as people ignore Jeffery Simmons likely would've had a sack. Everything was fresh and new Saturday for a steamy, midday practice. 'I don't even remember the record, but it was bad,' Ridley said during the session. The veteran wide receiver looks to be the biggest winner from the Titans using the No. 1 overall draft pick on Ward out of Miami. Coach Brian Callahan put their lockers together this offseason, and the connection has been growing steadily. Ridley laid out to put two hands on a pass from Ward in one drill, and he caught a handful of throws from the rookie Saturday. The Titans landed the No. 1 overall draft pick after going 3-14 last season and finishing on a six-game skid. 'We're going to bring some fun to Nashville,' said Ridley, who had 1,017 yards receiving but only four TD catches in his first season with the Titans. How Ward does as a rookie will be a big key for how much fun the Titans are responsible for this season. Ward is getting more work in training camp with the first-team offense after Will Levis' decision to have season-ending surgery Tuesday. The Titans used Saturday's session to focus on third down, scoring when within 20 yards of the goal line and a silent count with fans trying to find some shade doing their best to bring the noise. Callahan said Ward has been impressive in handling the different calls to run third down plays depending how defenses line up against the offense. 'Every time he goes out, he sees something new and and makes an adjustment and gets better for it,' Callahan said. "So as many third down periods and work that we can get for Cam's is going to put him in a place where he should be ready to go for the regular season.' The Titans could use that. They ranked 19th on third downs last season, converting 37.6%. Staying on the field is key for a team that was 27th in scoring just 18.3 points per game last season. Simmons said he'll be the first one to have Ward's back on game day. 'You can't help but to rally behind him,' Simmons said. Burks injured Wide receiver Treylon Burks hurt his right shoulder on a diving catch out of bounds. He got up and immediately grabbed at his right shoulder before walking to the locker room with training staff. Callahan said in a statement that Burks was being evaluated for a shoulder injury and the Titans will have an update at the appropriate time. NFL Network reported that Burks broke his collarbone. Burks was the 18th pick overall in 2022. He has 27 of 51 possible games because of injuries. ___ AP NFL:

UFL's New International Player Showcase Aims to Attract European Athletes
The United Football League is going international, announcing that it will host a player showcase in Switzerland in October in an effort to attract European athletes ready and motivated to compete next season. The showcase offers international players the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in front of UFL officials, coaches and personnel directors, per the UFL's official website, and they'll be evaluated based on their performance to be included in the UFL player pool and for potential free agent opportunities with UFL teams for upcoming seasons. "We are the league of opportunity, and we're expanding that opportunity overseas," said Doug Whaley, the senior vice president of player personnel for the UFL. The UFL will also put on seven showcase events in the United States from September to December in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Dallas, San Diego, Orlando, Phoenix, Houston and Los Angeles. The Zurich showcase will be held on October 5, in between the second (D.C. on September 28) and third (Dallas on October 12) U.S. showcases. [MORE: UFL to NFL Pipeline: Tracking Every UFL Player Signed to a 2025 NFL Roster] The league's announcement comes on the heels of rumors that it's considering expanding from eight to 10 teams for the 2026 season and possibly relocating all four USFL Conference teams (Birmingham Stallions, Michigan Panthers, Houston Roughnecks and Memphis Showboats) to new cities next season. Those new locations are expected to be Florida, Kentucky, Boise and Columbus, according to Sports Illustrated. "We've heard the rumors … and have been assured by the league that no final decisions have been made about numerous teams for next season, including the Stallions," Randall Woodfin, the mayor of Birmingham, said this week. The four XFL Conference teams (Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, San Antonio Brahmas and St. Louis Battlehawks) aren't rumored to be affected by the potential changes. Building more fan interest in local markets — a stated goal by the league entering this season — remains a work in progress as the UFL heads into a third season. "We are looking at every way to reengage and look at our marketplace in each separate silo as we move forward," Russ Brandon, CEO and president of the UFL, previously said. "We're a great product. … We're trying to activate as much as possible in each of these local markets, and we have a great plan in place, I believe, to do that." The UFL wrapped its second season last month, with Jordan Ta'amu and the Defenders taking down Offensive Player of the Year and regular-season MVP Bryce Perkins and the Panthers in the 2025 UFL Championship Game, 58-34. Season tickets for the 2026 season are already on sale. The 2026 UFL schedule — which will feature a 10-week regular season followed by a two-week postseason, including the 2026 title game — will be announced at a later date.
