Malaysia eyes legal overhaul to boost trade, regulate AI responsibly, says Azalina
She said Malaysia continues to liberalise its market through initiatives such as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and strategic partnerships with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and China.
'Asean has made meaningful progress in eliminating intra-regional tariffs. The next step is to reduce non-tariff barriers and improve regulatory alignment to ensure seamless trade,' she said in her keynote address at the SCG Legal Regional Meeting 2025 Asia and Pacific Rim, here yesterday.
Azalina said Malaysia is undertaking key legal reforms including a review of the Contracts Act 1950 and the Sale of Goods Act 1957, alongside the development of a Cross-Border Insolvency Act aligned with United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) standards.
On the digital front, Azalina said the government is drafting a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) law focused on ethics and governance, with the aim of supporting safe, responsible and competitive innovation.
'This initiative reflects Malaysia's proactive stance in regulating AI to ensure we keep pace with technological advancement while safeguarding public trust.
'The planned legal framework for AI complements broader reforms in governance, anti-corruption, and human rights, aimed at positioning Malaysia as a legally sound and economically vibrant nation,' she added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is maintaining its target of attracting 200,000 spectators to watch the World Motorcycle Championship (MotoGP) over three days at the 2025 Malaysian Grand Prix (GP) on October 24-26. SIC Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the company was aware of the high target compared to the previous edition but was still determined to realise it this year. Last year's Malaysian GP recorded a three-day attendance of 184,923 spectators. 'We have reached 75 per cent of the ticket capacity sold and this year we are introducing some exciting features including the first-ever pre-race electronic dance music (EDM) festival. 'The target of 200,000 spectators is quite bold but of course with the support of everyone we know we can achieve it,' said Shafriman during the launch of the 2025 Malaysian GP here yesterday. Also present at the launch was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh who said the race will be preceded by two EDMs on October 18-19. 'RM1 from every ticket sold will also be channelled to the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN) which will support the development of Malaysian athletes. 'SIC is also introducing a special Buy One-One Free promotion for Malaysia GP Rahmah tickets priced at RM49.90 each. The promotion which started at 12 noon yesterday will end at 8pm tomorrow (today),' she said. — Bernama

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 13 — Elon Musk has taken his feud against OpenAI to the App Store, accusing Apple of favoring ChatGPT in the digital shop and vowing legal action. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk said in a post on his social network X on Monday, without providing evidence to back his claim. 'xAI will take immediate legal action,' he added, referencing his own artificial intelligence company. X users responded by pointing out that DeepSeek AI out of China hit the top spot in the App Store early this year, and Perplexity AI recently ranked number one in the App Store in India. DeepSeek and Perplexity compete with OpenAI and Musk's startup xAI. Both OpenAI and xAI released new versions of their AI assistants, ChatGPT and Grok, in the past week. App Store rankings on Tuesday listed ChatGPT as the top free iPhone app with Grok in fifth place. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Factors going into App Store rankings include user engagement, reviews, and the number of downloads. OpenAI and Apple in June of last year announced an alliance to enhance iPhones and other devices with ChatGPT features. ChatGPT-5 rolled out free to the nearly 700 million people who use it weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists last week. Tech industry rivals Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and xAI have been pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence since the blockbuster launch of the first version of ChatGPT in late 2022. Chinese startup DeepSeek shook up the AI sector early this year with a model that delivers high performance using less costly chips. OpenAI in April of this year filed counterclaims against multi-billionaire Musk, accusing its former co-founder of waging a 'relentless campaign' to damage the organization after it achieved success without him. In legal documents filed at the time in northern California federal court, OpenAI alleged Musk became hostile toward the company after abandoning it years before its breakthrough achievements with ChatGPT. The lawsuit was another round in a bitter feud between the generative AI (genAI) start-up and the world's richest man, who sued OpenAI last year, accusing the company of betraying its founding mission. In its countersuit, the company alleged Musk 'made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead -- not for humanity but for Elon Musk.' Principal, wardens of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha reassigned to Sabah Education Dept amid probe into Zara Qairina's death
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 13 — The principal, senior assistant of Student Affairs and all wardens of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha have been temporarily assigned to the Sabah State Education Department pending the investigation into the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced the decision following the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) statement that the Bukit Aman Special Task Force has taken over the probe into the case. 'MOE will fully cooperate with the authorities to ensure the investigation is conducted thoroughly, carefully and comprehensively,' the ministry said in a statement today. MOE also emphasised that the case is now a top priority for the ministry. 'We hope that a transparent and complete investigation can be carried out to deliver justice for the family and all parties involved,' the statement added. — Bernama
