Seeing things from a Woody Point of View

Seeing things from a Woody Point of View

Yahoo12-07-2025
A trio of songwriters and musicians in the Gros Morne, N.L. area is inviting you to see things from its point of view this summer, by going to see a new show.
Woody Point of View is being presented at the Merchant Warehouse in Woody Point nearly every Thursday night between now and mid-September.
The show is a blend of music, old photos and storytelling, all presented by local musicians in an effort to entertain and enlighten.
The people behind the production have deep roots in Bonne Bay South, and they're hoping audience members will come to appreciate the area in the same way they do.
"What's different about it is that it's our local story. We welcome people to the park. They come with their own stories," said Michele McCarthy, creator and producer of the show.
"We also welcome people during the writers' festival and the comedy festival that bring their stories to us. This is our story told by people who have deep roots in the community."
Spotlight on Bonne Bay South
The folk duo, Tuff, made up of Kendra Parsons and Paul Rumbolt, helped co-write some of the songs in Woody Point of View, and they're the ones performing in the show.
Parsons is an entrepreneur who grew up in the area and whose family has been in the tourism business there since 1985.
The show takes place at one of her family's enterprises, on the waterfront in Woody Point.
WATCH | Hometown pride has led to storytelling from local musicians:
Parsons said she's pleased to make some evening entertainment available to visitors throughout the summer season, in a part of Gros Morne National Park that has typically seen lower numbers of tourists than the Rocky Harbour side of Bonne Bay.
Parsons's bandmate Paul Rumbolt is a distant cousin of hers, both having ancestors in Bonne Bay South with the surname "Tuff."
"There aren't any Tuffs left unfortunately here. But that's why we kind of decided to name our duo that, to bring it back to life again," said Parsons.
Parsons said the band name is a bit of a play on words, too.
"It is. We're Tuff by name and tough by nature," she said.
Love letter
Rumbolt and Parsons perform together quite often, but usually sing other people's songs about other places and events.
In this show, Rumbolt said the lyrics are personal, and the entire show is like a love letter to his hometown and its people.
"It's a personal sharing of what this place means to us, not just as a place where you grew up and went to school or anything like that," said Rumbolt.
"It's a giving back to an experience of being from here that is deeper than just being a place that you came from. It's a place that has defined us. We are who we are because of this place."
Photographs and memories
For her research in writing the show, McCarthy credits Tony Berger's book, The Good and Beautiful Bay, and the Bonne Bay Historical Archive as both being immensely helpful.
The online archive includes historical photos from the Bonne Bay area, some of which McCarthy incorporated as projected images in the live show.
"The photos just add a real sense of magic. Seeing the beauty of this bay from a historical perspective, seeing the community in its heyday, being a centre of the west coast," said McCarthy.
Woody Point was a major economic centre in western Newfoundland in the late 1800s, as well as a centre for law and government.
A show for everyone
Parsons, Rumbolt and McCarthy believe Woody Point of View is a show that visitors and local people will enjoy.
"I believe it's going to show a lot of my generation, like it's going to tell them our history and it's going to give them a different perspective on where they actually came from," said Parsons.
McCarthy said she believes even those who aren't from the area will appreciate what the show has to offer.
"I think they're going to have moments of nostalgia. They're going to have an experience that really adds to the present day magic of Woody Point," said McCarthy.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Rock Back Onto The Charts With A Signature Album

A little more than a quarter century ago, Red Hot Chili Peppers changed the sound of alternative music forever. The group, which by that point had already become hugely popular all around the world thanks to its signature funky, alternative style, released Californication in the summer of 1999. That set would go on to become not just one of the most famous by the outfit, but one of the most important titles in the rock subgenre. Decades later, Californication is back on the charts in the United Kingdom. Californication Reappears on Multiple Charts This week, the beloved full-length can be found on two rankings in the U.K., reappearing on both the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales charts. Californication returns at Nos. 93 and 97, respectively. Californication's Performance on Two Charts, Compared There are some stark differences between Californication's performance on the two charts. The title has risen highest on the Official Physical Albums ranking, where it peaked at No. 5, and where it has now spent 244 frames. That list looks only at full-lengths and EPs available on CD, vinyl, or cassette. On the general sales tally, the genre favorite has climbed as high as No. 21 and has racked up 61 stays. 'Scar Tissue,' 'Otherside" and 'Californication' In its heyday, Californication peaked at No. 5 on the Official Albums chart. In the 25 years since it was released, the project has been certified five times platinum in the U.K. for moving 1.5 million copies. Several smashes emerged from its tracklist, including 'Scar Tissue,' 'Otherside,' and the title track — all of which are still regarded as among the greatest in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' oeuvre. Greatest Hits by Red Hot Chili Peppers Two Red Hot Chili Peppers full-lengths appear on the charts in the U.K., but there is no crossover between the rankings on which they appear. As Californication becomes a bestseller again, the band's Greatest Hits surges on both the Official Albums Streaming and Official Albums rankings. That title is once again a top 40 win on both rosters, lifting to Nos. 30 and 35, respectively. 'Can't Stop' Rocks Back Into the Top 10 Even the sole Red Hot Chili Peppers song on a U.K. list is on the move in a positive direction. 'Can't Stop' jumps from No. 12 to No. 7 on the Official Rock and Metal Singles chart, returning to the top 10 681 weeks into its time on the genre-specific sales roster.

Taylor Swift ‘New Heights' Podcast Episode Sets Record With 9.26 Million Viewers And Counting

Taylor Swift's appearance on New Heights podcast Wednesday night didn't just break the internet, as the show claimed. It also set a new record viewership for the popular podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. As of Thursday morning, more than 9.26 million people had watched the latest episode, and that number was growing by the minute. Swift's appearance broke the old record held by Kylie Kelce, Jason's wife, whose guest spot on the show drew 8.9 million viewers. Undoubtedly, Swift's number will rise for weeks to come. The much-hyped appearance, the first time Swift and boyfriend Travis have done a joint interview, also included details about her new album, The Life of a Showgirl. Fans tuned in to watch her and Travis interact but also to hear details about that album, including the official release date of October 3—which, Swift noted on the podcast, is during Travis's birthday week. Taylor Swift New Heights Podcast Betters Past Guests' Numbers Kylie Kelce's episode, filmed more than a year ago, included some spicy secrets about spouse Jason's Tinder bio, more insights on being an NFL wife and her attempts to set Travis up pre-Swift. On Kylie's own podcast, Not Gonna Lie, she addressed the dethroning. 'Officially no longer the record holder for the most-watched episode of the other podcast. There's no way it's even close, and I love that for me,' Kylie said. New Heights has also run other massively popular guests. Travis's teammate, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, drew nearly 6 million viewers when he appeared two years ago. An episode featuring former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman, filmed in summer 2023, drew 5.2 million viewers. The trio talked about Super Bowl appearances, Edelman's former teammate Tom Brady and former coach Bill Bellicheck. New Heights has a lot of football guests on, understandably. Kansas City Chiefs Coach Andy Reid's appearance in May 2023 drew 3.2 million tuning in to learn about his first impression of Travis and advice he received about becoming an NFL head coach. The brothers frequently welcome their mom, Donna, on the podcast, and she always generates strong numbers. Last year, a holiday episode with Donna drew 3.1 million viewers. How High Will Taylor Swift New Heights Podcast Go? About 100,000 new views were being added to the podcast's total every 15 minutes as of this morning. That may go up as people who didn't have a chance to watch last night go on their lunch breaks at work or as people rewatch the podcast again and again over the next few days to get more information about Swift's new album. The episode had plenty of headline-making moments, including details about that highly anticipated album. Swift discussed how it reflects what was happening behind the scenes on her hugely successful Eras tour. She also talked about the meaning of the color orange and all the numerology theories relating to her music. The Taylor Swift New Heights podcast will have weeks to rack up more impressive numbers—the brothers won't get back to filming new episodes until closer to the NFL season.
