Rape accused joined search after crime, took victim to hospital: Police
KANPUR After sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl and attempting to murder her in Kanpur's Ghatampur locality on Tuesday, the accused, a 21-year-old neighbour, allegedly returned home after the gory act, washed his clothes, took a bath, and then joined the victim's family in search of the child who had been missing from home, behaving as if nothing had happened, said police on Wednesday.
The minor had gone to a nearby grocery store around 4pm when the accused youth allegedly lured her to a secluded spot on the pretext of offering her a chocolate. 'He outraged her modesty, and when the girl screamed in pain, the assailant allegedly stuffed her mouth with leaves and soil. As she continued to cry and resist, he repeatedly hit her with a brick until she lost consciousness,' said deputy commissioner of police (south) Deependra Nath Chaudhary.
An FIR was lodged under relevant sections of the BNS and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
The accused, who resides across a narrow lane from the victim's house in a sparsely populated locality, is said to have used his familiarity with the family to lure the girl away while she was playing outside her home on Tuesday evening.
'When I was asking others about my daughter's whereabouts, he told me that she was lying behind the Syed Baba ki Mazar,' the victim's mother recalled from the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where the girl remains in the intensive care unit.
Police said the accused led the family to the child's location near the mazar around 11pm and then rushed her to the hospital on his motorcycle. The CCTV footage shows him transporting the grievously injured child to the local community health centre.
According to the police, the accused fled the locality soon after many women identified him as the last person seen with the child. 'My daughter used to call him 'uncle'. He took her with him and then hit her with a brick on the face,' said the distraught father, a local e-rickshaw repairman.
'The manner in which he joined the search made it impossible to suspect him. He acted like one of us,' he added.
The area near the mazar, surrounded by dense trees, is largely deserted in the evenings. It was here, the police said, that the accused allegedly struck the child with a brick and attempted to suffocate her by stuffing leaves into her mouth.
After committing the crime, he returned to his house, cleaned himself up, and actively joined the search. His familiarity with the family and the neighbourhood allowed him to deflect suspicion, until eyewitnesses placed him with the child just before her disappearance.
Police officials said the accused was adopted by a tubewell operator and his wife, and had been a frequent visitor to the victim's house.
The DCP confirmed that multiple teams have been deployed to track the accused, who remains at large. 'We are closing in on him. His arrest is imminent,' he said.
Kanpur commissioner of police Akhil Kumar visited the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday and remained there until dawn. Given the critical condition of the victim, a green corridor was created to expedite her transfer to the LLR hospital.

After Mali checked out, the hotel staff grew suspicious and examined the notes he had given — and voila, they proved to be counterfeit. Sarifuddin and a few other hotel staff went to the room Mali had occupied and found a few notes in the dustbin. Subsequently, Sarifuddin lodged a police complaint, handing over five fake notes as evidence. Paper sheets used to print the counterfeit notes were also found in the room. A senior cop said Mali was nabbed from the address on his Aadhaar card, which he had furnished when checking into the hotel. He then rented the hotel room, smuggled in a printer and scanner inside a bag, and made copies of a real Rs 500 note. While he managed to scan, print and cut some notes to the actual size, a few came out poorly and were tossed in the bin. The youth has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. A case has been registered under BNS Sections 179 (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit coin, govt stamp, currency notes or banknotes), 180 (possession of forged or counterfeit coin, govt stamp, currency notes or banknotes), 182 (making or using documents resembling currency notes or banknotes), and 318 (cheating). Police are probing to see if Mali had paid in counterfeit notes at any other place.

Culpable homicide FIR against five of pvt firm after garden's gate crash
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Five individuals associated with the private firm responsible for Siddharth Garden's construction and maintenance were booked for culpable homicide and other offences on Thursday, a day after the collapse of the garden's entrance gate that left two women dead. The Kranti Chowk police said the five individuals linked to Prakash Developers included the garden project management consultant and the architect. They have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others through rash or negligent behaviour) and 3 (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention of all), among other charges. The FIR was registered after deputy engineer associated with the build-operate-transfer Sanjay Chamale registered a complaint with the police, accusing the private firm of substandard quality construction of the entry gate and not maintaining it properly. The entrance gate of the garden and nearby shops, among other facilities, were completed on June 23, 2022, on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract. Six-month-old girl dies in Karnataka after quack administers injections
Bengaluru: A quack in his 50s has landed in police custody in Ramanagara, Bengaluru south district, on charges of causing death of a six-month-old girl by administering injections. The accused is identified as Mohammed Saifulla, who ran his Alkhair Foundation Clinic in Balageri. Based on a complaint filed by the child's father, Ramanagara Town police booked Saifulla under BNS Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Saifulla lived in Balagere with his wife, police said. District health officials raided his clinic and seized it. Health officer Dr Niranjan declared him a quack. "He has no licence, nor has he studied MBBS. He could be a pharmacist, which we have to verify. But whatever the case, he is not a doctor and cannot treat patients," he said. Saifulla has been handed over to judicial custody. "We will take him to police custody during investigation, which will begin soon," a senior cop said.
