Illegal organ trade: Govt cancels transplant licences of two hospitals

Chennai: State govt has directed the directorate of medical and rural services to cancel transplant licences of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Trichy for their involvement in the illegal sale of organs. The hospitals that submitted "forged documents" for govt approval will be banned from conducting these surgeries, and govt will lodge a police complaint against two brokers involved in the organ trade and begin streamlining live-unrelated organ transplant surgeries, a release from the health department said. The decisions were made based on the recommendation of the govt-appointed committee to investigate irregularities in organ transplants, following complaints from Namakkal. The committee, led by Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project Project Director Dr S Vineeth, in its report submitted to the govt, confirmed these hospitals carried out illegal organ transplantations by submitting forged documents to the appropriate authority, procuring organs through brokers from donors who are related to the patient, and "misusing legal technicalities"—gross violations of the Transplant of Human Organs Act, 1994. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is addicted. As per organ transplant rules, hospitals must seek permission from authority if donors are not blood relatives — parents, siblings, or spouses. Investigations showed some documents submitted by the hospitals were forged by the transplant coordinators working at the hospital, the release said. The transplant surgeries were permitted based on these documents, and transplants were completed, it said. On Sunday, the govt said police complaints will be filed against two brokers—Anandan and Stanley Mohan—who were involved in the sale of organs, along with details of bank transactions, phone records, and other details collected by the inquiry committee. After finding the records of the district authorisation committee were "carelessly prepared," the investigating team has recommended standard operating procedures to streamline the work of district-level accrediting committees. The govt said it will constitute new state-level committees, reconstitute the four district-level committees and issue detailed SoPs. Hyd's air pollution alarming despite 727cr action plan

Hyderabad: Air pollution in Hyderabad continues to remain at hazardous levels, with PM10 concentrations hovering 8 to 13 times above the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended limits, despite a marginal 26.4% dip since 2017-18. The situation plateaued in 2024-25, with PM10 levels stagnating at 81 µg/m³, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board. Under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), Hyderabad was allocated 727.18 crore to tackle rising pollution levels, of which 435.11 crore has been spent so far, as per data from the PRANA portal. While authorities claim a 'slight improvement' over the last seven years, experts say that fundamental issues like unregulated construction activity, vehicular emissions, and poor waste management remain unaddressed. A comprehensive analysis by TOI, based on CPCB data, reveals that the city's air quality has shown little improvement despite an elaborate multi-agency action plan involving the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB), GHMC, TSRTC, and others. From 2019 till now, PM2.5 and PM10 levels have ranged between 70–100 µg/m³ and 80–120 µg/m³ respectively, well above WHO's limits of 5 µg/m³ (PM2.5) and 15 µg/m³ (PM10), and India's own standards of 40 µg/m³ and 60 µg/m³. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! The NCAP action plan included traffic decongestion, upgrading public transport, dust control in quarry zones, industrial relocations, and curbing garbage burning. "To ease congestion, we planned widening of roads and junctions under GHMC limits," a GHMC official said, adding, "We're also promoting long-term green cover by planting native species. It's a long term goal and we are constantly working on it." However, experts argue that execution remains the weak link. "The blueprint is extensive, it includes banning crop waste burning, developing compost pits, building green buffers along traffic corridors, retiring vehicles older than 15 years, and acting against violating industrial units," said Subba Rao, an environmentalist who has worked on urban pollution for three years. "But the biggest issue is follow-up. Implementation demands not just interdepartmental coordination, but regular monitoring and maintenance of whatever infrastructure is put in place." He also added that unless Hyderabad moves from planning to consistent execution, cleaner air will remain a distant goal despite heavy investments and structured programmes. Parthenium eradication drive in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to protect grasslands

Guwahati: Parthenium, which is believed to have entered India as a contaminant in wheat shipments from the US more than 70 years ago, has emerged as a major threat to grasslands in Assam's Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, which has the highest density of one-horned rhinos in the world. Colloquially known as the 'Congress grass', the name has been associated with Parthenium because it grows at a fast pace in fallow lands, including wildlife sanctuaries, said well-known botanist and chairman of state expert appraisal committee for union forest ministry Jatindra Sarma. An invasive weed from the Asteraceae family, Parthenium hysterophorus has spread aggressively, invading an estimated 1 million hectares of land across the country, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, as per reports. Forest officials cautioned that Parthenium is notorious for causing various issues such as skin allergies, fever and reducing agricultural productivity and biodiversity. To get rid of it and save the indigenous species of grass for the rhinos, park authorities have eradicated Parthenium across seven hectares in the sanctuary over the last two days. "Rhinos feed on 11 types of grasses found in Pobitora. The invasion of Parthenium has been worrying in the last two to three years. Its growth is significant this year due to fewer floods," Pobitora range officer Pranjal Baruah said on Sunday. As part of a three-day campaign of 'Parthenium Free Pobitora', on the first day, i.e., on Saturday, about 5.2 hectares of Parthenium was cleared by about 40 forest staff, who were led by Baruah. The drive continued on Sunday, with the team clearing a two-hectare area from the Tamuliduva area, along with members of EDCs and Pobitora Jeep Safari Association. "Special precautions have been taken for the forest staff to avoid Parthenium allergy during the drive. Also, special emphasis has been given by the sanctuary authority for the improvement of the habitat of rhinos and other animals by way of weed eradication, soil moisture conservation, etc., so that the carrying capacity of the ecosystem can be enhanced," said Baruah On Monday, the remaining part of about five hectares of Tamuliduva and Kamarpur areas will be covered under the drive.
