Love Island update as Ofcom reveals why it's dismissing record 14,000 complaints
Ofcom has announced that it will not be investigating complaints it received about Love Island 's latest season. More than 14,000 complaints were sent to the broadcasting regulator about the season, which aired this summer.
The ITV show returned in June for its twelfth season, which then had an eight-week run that concluded earlier this month. The live finale, which aired on August 4 on ITV2, saw islanders Toni Laites and Cach Mercer named as the winners of the reality TV show.
Love Island was faced with concerns of a 'rift' amongst the islanders over the course of the season. Some fans are said to have complained to Ofcom with allegations of bullying, misogyny and fears for the wellbeing of participants.
As reported by OK! magazine, one particular episode, broadcast on July 24, was the most controversial. It showed the 'Grafties' ceremony, which exposed private conversations between islanders in front of the whole villa. They were revealed in awards-style categories like Most Emotional Moment, Best No Filter Moment and Flirtiest Performance.
The episode generated 3,547 complaints that all related to alleged bullying of islander Shakira Khan. She had been nominated in four out of six categories, which sparked outrage from some viewers who worried about the possible impact any fallout from it could have on her mental health.
One person wrote at the time: "Any reason you have shown no bad clips of Meg but made Shakira look like the villain?" Another said: "Why do they keep setting up Toni and Shakira all the time for drama with Meg. Show Meg and Helena!"
Whilst a third viewer wrote: "Not a fan of you showing vulnerable crying moments of people." Sharing their thoughts, someone else said: "You can never make us hate Shakira."
Overall, the latest season of Love Island amassed 14,154 complaints to Ofcom, it's been reported. It's the highest number of complaints about the dating show since the summer series in 2021, which had been met with 36,000 complaints.
An Ofcom spokesperson has issued a statement on their decision to dismiss the complaints. They said: "We carefully assessed the complaints we received about this series of Love Island."
They continued: "We recognise that emotionally charged or confrontational scenes can upset some viewers. But, in our view, negative behaviour in the villa was not shown in a positive light, and contestants were seen supporting or apologising to each other."
The spokesperson added that they also considered the format of the show. They concluded: "We also took into account that the format of this reality show is well-established, and viewers would expect to see highs and lows as relationships and friendships are tested."

Peter Andre's strict rules for daughter Princess revealed amid Katie Price feud
Peter Andre has been praising his daughter's hard work on the four-part series and recently said he was 'strict' about what she could include in the show Peter Andre had a string of strict rules for his daughter daughter, Princess, who he shares with Katie Price, as she filmed her documentary series. Princess currently stars in her own ITV series, titled The Princess Diaries, where she gives fans a glimpse into her life in the spotlight and her childhood in the spotlight. Katie claimed she was banned from participating in the reality series, and the former glamour model shared her complaints on her podcast. Meanwhile, Peter has been praising his daughter's hard work on the four-part series and recently said he was 'strict' about what she could include in the series. In a recent chat, Peter said it was tough for him 'to cut that umbilical cord at 18' as he discussed his daughter becoming more independent as she turned 18. It comes as Princess Andre explains why she's not called her mum amid alleged 'feud'. Princess Andre explains why she's not called her mum amid alleged 'feud' "I was very strict about what she wasn't allowed to, you know, I didn't want didn't really want her doing a lot of stuff before she got to the age that she can do it herself," he tole the MailOnline. "I'm really proud of her. I think she's a really sweet person and I really hope people see that of her and I just want her to shine and, you know, I want her to just go on and just become her own little true gem." Peter also admitted he had struggled with 'letting go of the reigns' as Princess is still his 'baby'. He added: "They still say things that they've said when they were 10 or 1, like, they might be grown up in actual age, but they're still your baby." It comes after Peter slammed Katie on Instagram in a statement that read, "For 16 years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children. Unfortunately there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months." Katie subsequently responded with a post that read, 'I know I will always be seen as a sinner. That's fair. I allowed myself to fall into a reliance on drugs and alcohol. At times I was not the mother I should have been while I struggled with mental illness. 'I have been at times a poor friend, an awful sibling, and an untrustworthy partner. I've self-medicated, been unfaithful, damaged myself and those that I love.' Not long after, Katie's ex-husband, Alex Reid leaked footage of her waving a wad of cash while bankrupt. She tells her and Peter's daughter, Princess, that her younger siblings, Pete's children with his wife Emily, were "irrelevant." Katie can be seen counting cash in the video, before asking her daughter whether singer Peter "go on about" her bankruptcy and finances "a lot". Peter was 'shocked' by the contents of the video, with a source telling the Mirror: "He's so shocked that she would do this in front of their young child and saying his young children are irrelevant. It's not about the money. How could a mother do that about young children?"
