Basingstoke: Former Beacon pub set to become community hub

BBC News10-02-2025
A former pub has been bought by a council wanting to turn it into a community hub.Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council said it would lease the Beacon pub building on Kings Road, South Ham, to housing provider Sovereign Network Group (SNG), who were working with Westside Community Association (WCA) to provide a community space. The council said it hoped the building would reopen later in the year.Nicky Blunden from WCA said the opportunity meant they could "ensure key services remain available for the community".
"With help from SNG and the council, we're excited to start to shape ideas to maximise the use of the space at the new facility," she said
Raac found
WCA has been looking for more space for its community activities since the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (raac) forced the closure of Westside Community Centre and South Ham Library. The council said that it, alongside SNG, had been supporting WCA in their search, and that Russell Howard Park, the Ridgeway Centre in Buckskin, and a new shop in Kings Road were all being used to deliver services such as a community cafe and pantry. The council's cabinet member for communities, partnerships and inclusion, John McKay, said the WCA's services were important to the local community."We have been doing everything we can to explore opportunities for temporary space in the heart of South Ham to support them to restart more activities for residents of all ages," he said."The purchase of this building provides a unique space to provide these life changing activities in a central and accessible location."He said the council was working to firm up the plans, as well as looking at a more long-term solution.

I earn £10k a month doing a job no one wants – I only have to work half the year & get to travel the world

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WOMAN has revealed how she rakes in £10,000 a month - despite only working six months of the year. TikTok creator Ashlea shares every step of her glamorous lifestyle online - including her day job as a dump truck driver. 3 Ashlea from Perth says she makes £10k a month as a dump truck driver Credit: Instagram 3 She works FIFO (fly-in fly-out) roles, which allow her to work flexible shifts and enjoy extended time off Credit: Tiktok 3 Ashlea boasts over 81,000 followers on TikTok Credit: Tiktok The 26-year-old truck driver from Perth, Western Australia, has recently shared snaps from trips to Bali, Finland, Saudi Arabia and Colombia. She also shared a video revealing that after six years of hard work - and driving a car she didn't like - she's finally bought her dream car. In 2023, she detailed her income in a TikTok video and has since become a vocal advocate for women in mining and FIFO (fly-in fly-out) roles. Ashlea said: "When I first started as a greenie [new truck driver], for my first three months I was paid $36.50 (£19.40) an hour. "And we do 12-hour days and I work on a two and two roster, so that's 14 days on and then I get 14 days off, so I pretty much work six months of the year." Just three months into her new job, she said her hourly pay jumped up to $43.50 (£23.10) an hour. She added: "So quite a nice jump. And for my first year as a greenie, that would have taken me to approximately $94-$95,000 (£49-£50,000) annually for the six months. "So, pretty cool for a new truckie." Her latest rate is about $51.50 (£27.30) an hour - and she gets a $2,000 (£1,060) bonus each month she stays with her contracting company. Ashlea said: "So that could be anywhere between $6,000 (£3,180) and $10,000 (£5,300). I quit my £43K job in the UK to be a grape-picker in Italy and have ZERO regrets - I don't get paid but I'm so happy "Annually, my $51.50 would be approximately $112,000 (£59,420). With my bonuses, that could be another $10,000, so $122,000 (£64,730) for my first year. "And then when I'm employed directly with the company itself, every full year you're employed through the mine site direct, they pay you a bonus also which I think is approximately $3,000 (£1,590) each year. "And then if the company itself does well I think they actually pay you a bit of a profit share just as a thanks, which I love." The TikToker explained in the comments section of her video that her employer covers the cost of everything - including accommodation, food and flights. She added that she only works 22 weeks a year, which is less than half the year once her four weeks of annual leave are factored in. Ashlea isn't the only woman who's turned her life around. In June 2021, Kelly Moore, a 44-year-old mum from Maidstone, walked away from a career in care and took a leap into something completely new. Once stuck in her overdraft and counting every penny, the mum-of-one has since left the nine-to-five grind behind - and now runs one of Maidstone's fastest-growing eco-cleaning businesses. Her company, Cleaning With Meaning, which uses handmade, refillable and environmentally friendly products, brings in £15,000 a month.

FOURTEEN businesses are set to deliver critical public sector infrastructure, helping to keep schools open, healthcare services running efficiently, and community facilities in use through a new framework. Coming at a pivotal time, the appointments are much needed, as RAAC-related disruption continues across the UK, highlighting the urgent need for fast, safe, and high-quality building solutions. Lesley Peaty, Regional Director for The Scottish Procurement Alliance Lesley Peaty, Regional Director at SPA, said: 'What we're offering is a fast and responsive service, giving public bodies the tools and access to the highest quality of suppliers. 'That will enable them to react swiftly to emergencies, refurbishments or growing populations without sacrificing quality or oversight. 'This offers a practical and reliable solution for Scotland's public sector, especially as we face mounting pressures from ageing infrastructure, RAAC-related disruption and rising demand for education and healthcare spaces. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'By offering one of the most effective solutions currently on the market, this framework directly responds to evolving policies and the real needs of communities, shaped through extensive consultation with partners and engagement across the sector.' MB3 gives public bodies access to high-quality suppliers for permanent, temporary, healthcare-specific, and refurbished modular building, supporting education, healthcare, emergency services, and community projects at no additional cost. Replacing its predecessor MB2, the framework runs until 2029 and has been designed to reflect the evolving needs of Scotland's public sector. It is designed to cut build times, reduce disruption, and enhance sustainability, ensuring the continued delivery of public sector projects across Scotland well beyond the expiry of MB2 in 2025. Appointed suppliers include Algeco UK Ltd, Healthmatic, Integra Buildings Ltd, McAvoy Modular Offsite, Modulek Ltd, Modularwise Ltd, P McVey Mobile Buildings Ltd, Portakabin Ltd, Premier Modular Ltd, Rollalong Ltd, Sibcas Ltd, Vision Built Structures Ltd and Wernick Buildings Ltd. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Lesley added: 'We always want to ensure we give our partners the flexibility to choose suppliers via direct award or mini competition with no stipulations on the type of contract that is used. This means they have full control over how they procure works and services as well as having the opportunity to utilise our experienced team to support them achieve their desired outcome with confidence.' 'That flexibility is already having an impact, keeping classrooms open, supporting stretched healthcare services, and helping community spaces expand their capacity and stay in use. 'It also caters to urgent requirements with short-term modular buildings, while offering sustainable, refurbished solutions as well as the repair of existing buildings for longer-term value. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Above all, this framework reinforces our commitment to social value, with clear community benefit requirements embedded throughout. It's about creating meaningful opportunities, local jobs, training pathways, and lasting partnerships. 'We're proud to continue delivering those outcomes in collaboration with our long-term charity partner, Lintel Trust.' SPA's Community Benefit Fund has invested over £1.1million into more than 100 community-based initiatives since 2017, with recent projects supporting holiday hunger programmes, mental health services and employability schemes. MB3 is expected to expand that reach further from direct procurement activity. SPA currently oversees close to 700 live projects with a combined value of £1.1 billion supporting 300 suppliers from SMEs to large multinational businesses.
