KKR reviews road barriers according to technical needs
ARAU: The use of types of road barriers in this country is based on suitability according to technical justification in a specific area to determine the materials that can be used to ensure the safety of road users.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that his ministry is always attentive to the latest materials and technological developments from time to time, with a unit that tests the material samples to determine whether they are suitable for use on the country's roads or not.
'When a new material is introduced in our market, we take a sample to see if it is suitable for our country, because our country has different elements (for example) excessive rain. So what is good in other countries may not necessarily be also good in ours,' he said.
He made these remarks to reporters after inspecting the major project currently being developed at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) here today. Also present was UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli.
Nanta said this when asked to comment on whether the Works Ministry (KKR) has plans to replace concrete or metal road barriers with shock-absorbing materials to prevent fatal accidents.
Nanta said, for example, on the Karak Highway in hilly areas, a 'roller barrier' type road barrier is used, which is a composite component that is not rigid, but it cannot be used in all areas as some areas have to use concrete barriers.

Meanwhile, he said his ministry, as the implementing agency, has taken note of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's directive regarding the reconstruction of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Chuping and Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Perlis, which have been stalled for the past 12 years.
'These projects are still at the Ministry of Education level (since they involve schools), and when the time comes, (if) they are sent to us, we will follow up with the appropriate actions as the implementer,' he said.
On April 27, Anwar ordered the reconstruction of SK Chuping to begin this year, while the school project must be immediately handed over to a capable government company during the chairing of the Special State Development Meeting with the Chief Minister and the line-up of state and federal government leadership at the Perlis State Development Office.
Meanwhile, in a KKR media statement, Nanta mentioned that there are three main projects at UniMAP, namely the construction of the UniMAP Mosque and Islamic Centre Project; UniMAP Grand Hall Project; and UniMAP Engineering Study Centre Project.
Nanta said the construction project of the mosque and Islamic centre is scheduled to be completed in August, while the UniMAP Grand Hall is expected to be completed in July, while the UniMAP Engineering Study Centre is slated for completion in October next year.

Spain's Sonar Festival hit by artist boycott over parent firm KKR's Israel ties
MADRID, June 6 — Dozens of artists have pulled out of next week's Sonar electronic music festival in Spain, protesting financial ties between its parent company and real estate investments in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. In an open letter posted on social media, more than 60 artists — including Arca, Asia, DJ Paquita Gordon, and Shaun J. Wright — accused the private equity firm KKR of being 'fully complicit in the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza'. Sonar — which will be held in Barcelona this year June 12-14 — is one of around 80 global events operated by Superstruct Entertainment, which has been majority-owned by KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts) since October 2024. The artists are urging the festival to sever ties with KKR and to adhere to the principles of the international Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to financially pressure Israel into ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories. BDS accuses KKR of complicity in 'Israel's genocide and colonial apartheid regime', citing the firm's stake in German media group Axel Springer. That group owns Israeli classifieds site Yad2, which BDS says features listings for real estate projects in occupied Palestinian territories. The Sonar festival said on its website that the 2024 acquisition of Superstruct shares by KKR and other investors was 'purely financial' and that Sonar had no say in the transaction. 'We categorically condemn the genocide of the Palestinian people,' the festival said in a statement, adding: 'At no time have we ever sent — nor will we ever send — a single euro to KKR.' Spanish Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun, a member of the far-left Sumar alliance, voiced concern last month over what he described as KKR's involvement in Spanish festivals and its business activities in 'illegally occupied' Palestinian territories. 'We do not want a fund that actively contributes to the illegal occupation of Palestine to have a role in our cultural life,' he told reporters. Contacted by AFP in New York, KKR did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognised a Palestinian state in May 2024 in a coordinated decision slammed by Israel. Works Ministry Allocates RM88 Million For Upgrading Of 121 Overcrowded Schools
SHAH ALAM, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) will upgrade 121 overcrowded schools, involving 127 classrooms in six states, through a project to address the issue of overcrowded schools, involving an allocation of RM88 million. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said a total of 127 letters of acceptance (SST) were handed over to the successful contractors today to implement the project in Selangor, Langkawi, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu and Penang. "Selangor has the highest number of SSTs, namely 111 works, followed by seven in Perak, four in Pahang, three in Negeri Sembilan, and one each in Terengganu and Penang. "The scope of the project involves 117 construction works for premier classrooms and 10 classrooms for the Integrated Special Education Program (PPKI) using the industrialised building system (IBS) concept," he told reporters at the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters here today. Ahmad said the IBS concept not only helped to speed up the construction process, but also ensured better and sustainable construction quality, with all projects targeted to be completed by October this year. He said the implementation of the project was part of the MADANI Government's initiative in prioritising people's projects to improve the quality of learning while creating a conducive education ecosystem. "These projects are a proactive step by the Ministry of Education (KPM) to achieve the target of implementing a single-session school system by 2030. "In addition, the ministry also wants to provide more modern and comfortable facilities while creating a conducive teaching and learning ecosystem for students, teachers, as well as the school staff," he said. Earlier, Ahmad handed over SST to 127 contractors for the project. They were selected through an open tender that was implemented from April 24 to May 16.
