California Democrats make right decision to leave Elon Musk's X. Others should do the same
Having an account on Elon Musk's social media platform X perpetuates an acceptance of tyranny as a feature of our society.
Musk, much like his boss, President Donald Trump, catered to conservatives' irrational fear that they were being left behind in the social media space. Musk bought X, previously known as Twitter. And Trump started his own platform, Truth Social.
According to data from Similarweb, a third-party company that tracks social media analytics, more than 115,000 users deactivated their X accounts the day after the election.

Some of California's leading Democrats finally came to their senses. On Thursday Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry announced 58 of the caucus' 60 members are no longer using the social media platform.
'There are real risks with relying on a private company, owned by Elon Musk, as a channel for communications,' Rivas said about leaving the social media platform. 'Democracy depends on impartial information, not the shifting whims of one billionaire. Hate speech is everywhere on X, the company has no accountability, and the flood of misinformation from fake accounts is just that — fake. I don't think taxpayer resources should go to X.'
Frankly, they should've left a long time ago. I deleted my X account the day after the election, after I realized how wrong it is to be on a platform controlled by a zealous billionaire.
X lost its way a long time ago when it changed its verification process from a legitimate way to protect someone's identity to a paid subscription that opened the floodgates for every weird uncle with their F-150 as a profile picture to say the most unhinged things.
X, regardless of who owns it, isn't the epicenter of society as one might think. DataReportal's Digital 2025: Global Overview Report shows X is the ninth most used social media platform globally and the eighth most popular social platform for users ages 18-and-over. It also has only 104 million users in the United States, compared to YouTube with 253 million and Instgrame with 172 million.
Musk's intentions were never to make X a space for variety of thought. He uses it now as a weapon, from calling a U.S. Senator a 'traitor' to virtually campaigning against anyone or anything he opposes.

Shortly after it was announced that the Dems ditched X, Assembly Republicans announced that they were joining an alternate platform, Bluesky, because they're not afraid of listening to different opinions. Or so they say.
'Democrats can run, but they can't hide from being called out for their out-of-touch agenda that's made California less safe and less affordable,' Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher (R-East Nicolaus) said. 'Republicans are willing to listen to voices from across the political spectrum and don't need a safe space to get away from opinions we don't like.'
The archaic nature of X is not a shining example of how people should express their opinions and ideas.
Conservatives got what they wanted in X, a haven for hate to be spread and misinformation to be amplified. Now that California Democrats are leaving, or at least eliminating their official accounts, Republicans wanna say it's because they don't want to listen to other people. Give me a break.
Our democracy depends on Americans ability to speak to one another about their differences and similarities.

President Donald Trump spewed out a bizarre conspiracy theory, claiming on social media that former President Joe Biden died in 2020 and was replaced with clones. On late Saturday night on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump shared a post from a pro-Trump account that alleged Biden was killed in 2020 and the country had been run by 'robotic engineered soulless mindless entities' during Biden's entire term. 'There is no #JoeBiden - executed in 2020. #Biden clones doubles & robotic engineered soulless mindless entities are what you see. Democrats dont know the difference,' the post that Trump shared read. HuffPost has reached out to the White House for comment. Trump's wife was previously at the center of similar conspiracy theories. Back in 2019, Trump denied the rumors and conspiracy theories that flooded the internet, which claimed his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, had been replaced by a body double during his first term in the White House. 'The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it's actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places,' Trump tweeted at the time. 'They are only getting more deranged with time!' Last month, Trump entertained another conspiracy theory that Biden hid his cancer diagnosis while he was in office. The White House announced on May 18 that Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. 'There are things going on that the public wasn't informed [about],' Trump alleged of Biden's diagnosis while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on May 19. Trump then appeared to suggest that the situation should be investigated. 'Why wasn't the cognitive ability, why wasn't that discussed? And I think the doctor said he's just fine,' he continued. Fla. Sen. Rick Scott calls for more budget cuts to restore ‘fiscal sanity' into Trump's ‘big, beautiful' bill
A top Senate Republican said Sunday that more spending cuts are needed to infuse 'fiscal sanity' into President Trump's proposed 'big, beautiful' budget bill. Florida Sen. Rick Scott, who serves on the Senate's Budget Committee, told WABC 770 AM radio's 'Cats Roundtable' that his fellow GOPers in the House did not do nearly enough to control spending or help rein in America's explosive debt when they passed the bill last month. Getty Images 'The House worked their tail off. Unfortunately, the House bill cuts the spending over the next 10 years by something like 1.7%. There's a lot more we have to do,' Scott told show host John Catsimatidis. Scott, a two-term senator who previously served as Florida's governor, said the bill passed by the House includes many good things such as renewing the 2017 Trump tax cuts and boosting spending for border security and the military. 'But we have to bring more fiscal sanity to the table,' he said. 'In the next few months, we'll probably hit $37 trillion in debt. And we're running over $1 trillion a year on interest expense.' 'If we leave it just the way it is, we're going to be close to $60 trillion worth of debt in 10 years. We'll never be able to pay for anything else we care about.' He said Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, have shown where spending can be slashed. 'We've got to go line by line through the budget and do everything we can to save money,' Scott said. 'I'm committed to getting this bill done. Getty Images The proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is intended to be Trump's signature legislative achievement of the year, features more than $1.5 trillion in spending cuts over a 10-year period but is projected to add between $3 to $4 trillion to the debt during that time frame, according to various estimates. Deficit concerns have prompted backlash from GOP fiscal hawk such as Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who have expressed opposition to the mega-bill in its current form because of its impact on the deficit. Other Republican critics, such as Sens. Republicans hold a 53-47 edge over Democrats in the Senate. Trump has warned that Republicans who threaten to vote against his spending plan are playing into the hands of Democrats. He singled out Paul on Saturday. AP On a different segment of the Sunday radio show, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) defended the bill passed by one vote in his chamber and vowed that the Senate and House and the White House would agree on a final package by July 4. In response to criticism from Senate budget hawks such as Scott, the speaker insisted the House made historic cuts. 'No other government has ever cut this much in a single piece of legislation,' Johnson said. 'You're talking about more than $1.5 trillion. It's by a factor of two the largest cut that Congress will have ever made. 'Is it enough? No, it's not,' he acknowledged. 'We have $36 trillion in federal debt. But it's important to remember that we did not get into that financial situation overnight. It took many decades. 'It's going to take more than a flip of a switch to turn it around … It's like a large vessel on the sea. It doesn't turn on a dime. You need like a mile of open ocean to do it.' Johnson said the House bill was a 'dramatic shift in the right direction.'
