BREAKING NEWS Chiefs star Rashee Rice gets jail sentence for fleeing Dallas car crash that left several people injured
The jail term can be served at any time over the next five years, according to ESPN, which was the first outlet to report the news.
The NFL is expected to discipline Rice, who could receive a multi-game suspension after he was seen attempting to run away from the multi-vehicle crash last year.
Rice was renting a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that authorities said was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway, an attorney for the company that owns the vehicle said in 2024.
The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without determining if anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, police said. A total of six vehicles were involved in the crash.
A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000.
Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.
After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, attorney and state senator Royce West said Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.'
Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills.

Florida gymnastics coach gets 12 years for sexually assaulting underage girls who were his students
A South Florida gymnastics coach accused of sexually assaulting at least three underage girls who were his students was sentenced to 12 years in prison as part of a plea deal on Thursday. Oscar Olea, 40, reached the deal with prosecutors last week, but the state attempted to withdraw it after two of the three victims said they were dissatisfied with the terms. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Alberto Milian denied the request to void the deal and accepted Olea's guilty plea on two counts of lewd and lascivious battery/sexual activity and two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a specified minor. Olea was arrested in February 2024 following a lengthy investigation. Olea was working as a gymnastics instructor in Key Biscayne in 2011 when the assaults began, prosecutors said. One of the victims was around 12, while the other two were 16. Two other young girls, ages 4 and 7, also came forward with accusations against Olea, but prosecutors declined to pursue charges because of inconsistencies in their statements, court records show.

Tinder date rapist who assaulted woman he met at Soho House is SPARED jail after claiming he wants to be a good boyfriend
A man who raped a woman he met on Tinder following their first date at Soho House was spared jail time after he claimed he wants to be a good boyfriend. William Hathaway, 33, was sentenced to therapy and 10 years of probation on Tuesday after he was convicted of raping a woman at his Manhattan apartment in 2020. In a bizarre defense, Hathaway told the court he should be spared jail time because he is now looking for a serious relationship and wants to have a positive future. 'Since my arrest, I've tried to respond to this experience in ways that reflect loyalty and responsibility,' he told the court. 'I now date with the intention of long term relationships... I want to be a good boyfriend, a good husband, a good father one day.' While prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence of four years in prison, a judge decided to go with a slap on the wrist. 'I'm not sure if this sentence is what's the right answer or should you be sitting in a jail cell for a while to get a sense of what incarceration is about,' Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Josh Hanshaft, according to the New York Post. 'But I do find the probationary sentence will at least get you the help so you do not hurt another individual again.' Hathaway, who now lives in Miami, must enroll in a sex offender treatment program and register as a sex offender as part of his sentence. A jury convicted Hathaway of rape in the third degree in April. Prosecutors said Hathaway, then 27, met the 23-year-old victim on the dating app Tinder. The two met in person a few days later at the exclusive members club Soho House on February, 15, 2020, before Hathaway took the victim back to his West Village apartment and raped her without a condom. The victim said in court before the sentencing that Hathaway 'took her voice and dignity' when he 'decided to do whatever he wanted' with her. She added that she has battled an alcohol addiction and suicidal thoughts since she was raped. Prosecutors said Hathaway and the victim first had consensual sex but that he did not stop when she asked him to. They told the court the victim told Hathaway to stop at least five times as she pushed on his chest but was ignored. 'To not sentence this defendant to a period of incarceration for his conduct would be adhering the outdated concept that there needs to be some form of violence or force to constitute rape,' said Manhattan District Attorney Ashley Durkin. 'He took away a part of me that I can never have back,' the victim told the court. 'For what? To please himself. All he was thinking about was himself.' Hathaway, on his part, said he was simply trying to have a 'fun date' and apologized to the victim during the sentencing hearing. His lawyer told the court the victim had withdrawn her consent 'approximately one minute' before the rape ended as he asked the judge to spare his client from serving prison time. According to the Post, Hathaway was charged with a similar offense in the summer of 2020 but was acquitted in a 2023 trial. The jury and judge in the case he was convicted in would not have been aware of the previous case as it was sealed.
