Teenager charged after converted firearm recovered in drugs raid
A teenager has been charged after a blank firing gun converted into a lethal weapon was recovered by police. Sufiaan Ali is believed to be one of the first people charged as new legislation comes in next month with regard to specific Turkish-made blank firers.
He has been charged with possession of a readily convertible firearm following a drugs raid in Oldham yesterday (Thursday, February 6).
The 19-year-old, of Hardy Street, Oldham, has been remanded to appear at Manchester Crown Court in Minshull Street on Friday March 14. He is also charged with being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs (namely THC and synthetic cannaboids) and possession of criminal property.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "This charge is thought to be one of our firsts for this specific new offence, and comes as we support a national amnesty to recover Turkish-manufactured Top Venting Blank Firers (TVBF).
"Firearms of any nature, but particularly models Retay, Ekol, Ceonic ISSC and Blow, must be surrendered to police stations by Friday 28 February 2025, as they are now illegal."

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer after dozens of people joined disorder that saw cars set on fire and bricks being hurled in Salford. About 50 to 60 people gathered during the disturbance in the city's Lower Broughton Road at about 13:30 BST, Greater Manchester Police said. Cars were stolen and set on fire, motorbikes were being ridden erratically and bricks thrown at officers, while wheelie bins and cars were used to block off the road, the force said. A 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer. The windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed during the disruption. "This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and we took robust and appropriate action. "A large number of officers will be remaining in the area over night as a precaution. "There are currently no ongoing incidents in the area, however, tensions remain heightened, and we have robust plans in place, should we need to respond to any further incidents." Riots erupt in Salford as 60 masked youths burn vehicles and hurl bricks at police with 'tensions high'
Riots erupted in Salford on Wednesday after a group of youths assaulted a police officer and set vehicles on fire. Police warned of "serious disorder" after 60 teenagers were reported terrorising an area of the city shortly after 1.30pm. Erdoğan's AKP takes over Istanbul district from opposition CHP
A candidate of Turkey's ruling AKP has taken over as mayor of Istanbul's Gaziosmanpaşa district after the previous incumbent from the opposition CHP was arrested, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday. The candidate from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's AKP was voted in with the support of the ultra-nationalist MHP. The previous Gaziosmanpaşa district mayor was arrested a week ago, along with four other CHP district mayors in Istanbul and the city of Adana in the south. The mayors have been accused of corruption and dismissed from office. The CHP has termed the arrests a coup. Gaziosmanpaşa is the fourth district that the CHP, Turkey's largest opposition party, has lost since the 2023 local elections, in which Erdoğan's AKP came second for the first time in its history. While observers see political manoeuvring behind the arrests and dismissals, the AKP insists that the Turkish judiciary is politically independent. To date, 12 CHP mayors have been dismissed from office. Appointments in some of their districts have yet to be made, while administrators seen as close to the government have been appointed in three. In six districts, deputies from the same party have been elected, as in the case of Istanbul's dismissed mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested in March. İmamoğlu is seen as Erdoğan's strongest rival.
