Golden Arrows sign striker Khumalo, assessing ex-Royal winger

TimesLIVE07-07-2025
Quietly going about their business, Lamontville Golden Arrows have started revamping their squad after a few departures of experienced players, securing the signature of an ABC Motsepe League player while assessing a youngster from expelled Royal AM.
With the departure of two centre-forwards in released veteran Knox Mutizwa and Ryan Moon, who heads to neighbours AmaZulu, Arrows have found themselves with a need for a new target man. It appears the Betway Premiership side has found one of the successors, casting their net down to the third tier Motsepe League.
Sources said Arrows have completed the transfer of 27-year-old Mkhambathi FC striker Thokozani Khumalo. Like Athini Maqokolo — who was reported by TimesLIVE to have moved to AmaZulu, though there may be a contractual hitch to that deal — Khumalo's transfer to Abafana Bes'thende is another Khabba Cup success story.

Mngqithi reveals the secret behind Sundowns' success

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has warned his successor at Mamelodi Sundowns Miguel Cardoso that the title race won't be easy this season, saying more teams, including his Arrows, are gunning for the Brazilians. Arrows face provincial foes Durban City in their third league game of the campaign at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm). Abafana Bes'thende are high in morale after beating another KZN rivals, Richards Bay, at King Zwelithini Stadium last Wednesday, bouncing back after losing their league opener 3-1 away to Siwelele four days earlier. 'Cardoso must know it's not going to be easy for him because all these teams are gunning for him, including myself,' Mngqithi said. The Arrows mentor, who spent 10 years at Sundowns, where he started as Pitso Mosimane's assistant coach, also poured his heart out, narrating what gives Sundowns an edge over other teams, as they've won the past eight editions of the championship. 'It's difficult for other teams to compete at the level of Sundowns; these five substitutions are a challenge for any other team in the league because if you go to Pirates and say you want them to make five substitutions, are you guaranteed the same quality?' Mngqithi asked.

Etiosa Ighodaro joins Kaizer Chiefs – Can he be the striker they've been waiting for?

Another striker Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have secured the services of striker Etiosa Ighodaro from Mamelodi Sundowns. Ighodaro spent last season on loan at AmaZulu. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Image: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have completed the deal to bring Mamelodi Sundowns' Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro to Naturena. Amakhosi announced on their social media channels on Tuesday that Ighodaro joins their ranks in a bid to address their woes in front of goal that have plagued them for the last two Betway Premiership seasons. Ighodaro joins from Sundowns, but since joining the Brazilians at just 20 years old in 2021, he never kicked a ball for them in an official game. Immediately after arriving in South Africa from Abuja College, he was sent on loan to the University of Pretoria. In 2022, he moved – on loan again – to Chippa United in the Eastern Cape. In 2023, SuperSport United called on his services before AmaZulu secured him the following season. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. We would like to welcome him to the Kaizer Chiefs Family! #WelcomeIghodaro #Amakhosi4Life — Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) August 19, 2025 During his career in South African football, his best goal return in the league was 11 goals in 27 games for Chippa United. Last season, he found the back of the net six times for AmaZulu. In the last four years, he's scored 25 goals in all competitions. That mixed record tells the story of a striker still finding consistency, but one who has shown enough to hint at his potential. While he needs to improve on his goal input, there are some positives to Ighodaro's game, and Nasreddine Nabi will be hoping to get the most out of them. With his physical frame, Ighodaro is built like a traditional number 9, possessing the physicality to hold the ball up effectively and shield it under pressure. This allows him to occupy defenders and create opportunities – he combines this with the awareness of a modern striker. He's also been credited with intelligent off-the-ball movement and his ability to read the game. At just 24 years old, Ighodaro still has a lot of room for improvement. Whether he can become the prolific goalscorer Chiefs are desperate for remains to be seen. For Chiefs, the signing represents both a gamble and an opportunity. Ighodaro has shown flashes of promise without yet proving himself as a consistent match-winner, but Naturena could be the stage where he finally delivers on his potential. If Nabi can harness his strengths and unlock his finishing touch, Ighodaro may well become the striker to fire Amakhosi back to the summit of South African football. BREAKING: Kaizer Chiefs announces new striker

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of new striker Etiosa Ighodaro. The 24-year-old Nigerian forward scored five goals in 25 matches last season for AmaZulu. He was on loan to the KZN-based side from Mamelodi Sundowns. In recent weeks, the striker has been linked to Kaizer Chiefs after his loan spell ended at AmaZulu. On Tuesday morning, Amakhosi announced that the Nigerian forward was their eighth signing of the season. 'Kaizer Chiefs have acquired the services of another striker, Etiosa Ighodaro. We would like to welcome him to the Kaizer Chiefs Family!' the club said in a statement. In July, the Soweto giants signed another striker, Flavio Silva. The 29-year-old Portuguese has yet to play an official match but did impress during Amakhosi's Toyota Cup match against Asante Kotoko. Amakhosi have won their opening two matches this season in the Betway Premiership and will look to extend their winning streak on Tuesday against Richards Bay.
