Another undeserved loss for Richards Bay FC
Richards Bay FC supporters pinched themselves when they woke this (Thursday) morning, hoping the 1-0 loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows last night had just been a bad dream. But it was, in fact, real – a nightmare. After again hugely dominating proceedings, firing shots at will against their opponents, the Rich Boyz were simply unable to put the ball into the back of the net. There were at least a dozen clear opportunities, when it looked easier to score than to miss, but not one that mattered. It was the opposite story for Arrows, whose lone second-half chance was well and truly buried by Junior Dion – a magnificent volley from just outside the box that left four defenders and goalkeeper Salim Magoola mere spectators. No stopper in the world would have got near, and ultimately the 82nd minute goal was enough to deny NRB the win they thoroughly deserved. That's two losses in two games in an unlucky start to their Betway Premiership campaign, after losing 2-1 to Marumo Gallants in the season opener. And it won't get easier as they travel to the FNB Stadium on Tuesday to meet Kaizer Chiefs and their thousands of fans. But they have played extremely well thus far, and if Lady Luck changes her fickle mind, this time they could well get the rewards they deserve. Don't have the ZO app? Golden Arrows sign striker Khumalo, assessing ex-Royal winger
Quietly going about their business, Lamontville Golden Arrows have started revamping their squad after a few departures of experienced players, securing the signature of an ABC Motsepe League player while assessing a youngster from expelled Royal AM. With the departure of two centre-forwards in released veteran Knox Mutizwa and Ryan Moon, who heads to neighbours AmaZulu, Arrows have found themselves with a need for a new target man. It appears the Betway Premiership side has found one of the successors, casting their net down to the third tier Motsepe League. Sources said Arrows have completed the transfer of 27-year-old Mkhambathi FC striker Thokozani Khumalo. Like Athini Maqokolo — who was reported by TimesLIVE to have moved to AmaZulu, though there may be a contractual hitch to that deal — Khumalo's transfer to Abafana Bes'thende is another Khabba Cup success story.

Riveiro vows never to coach another PSL Club
Jose Riveiro will be remembered for his loyalty and his demeanor as he closed his Orlando Pirates chapter with a 3-0 win against Lamontville Golden Arrows. Having said that, he was asked in his last press conference whether or not he would coach another Premier Soccer League club, for example a team like Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns. This is what he had to say. 'No, never. Once, Always,' Riveiro told the media after his last match coaching Orlando Pirates, quoted by Soccer Laduma . 'I will never coach any other team in South Africa, AmaBhakaniya. Orlando Pirates are the only club that I could have the motivation and the courage and the energy – and the heart, in this case – to coach in the country. No doubt.' So Riveiro will not be making any headlines by moving to Chiefs or Sundowns because the Bucs emblem is fully ingrained in his heart. Jose Riveiro leaves the head coach seat in a much better place. He has added five trophies to the Sea Robbers trophy cabinet, three MTN 8 Cups and two Nedbank Cups. But also a playing style that brought the people back to the stadium. Going with a 62% win ratio, added to this a club record wins total for Pirates and despite not being able to win a league during his stint, three consecutive CAF Champions League qualifications, six domestic cup finals and the CAF Champions League semi-final run, losing narrowly to Pyramids FC, will live long in the memory of the supporters, the 'Happy People'. According to reports, Riveiro is on his way to Al Ahly in Egypt. Where he will try and write a new story at another African giant. It's not really Riveiro giving them chances, it's Pirates: coach on Bucs' young guns
More new names of young players have appeared in Orlando Pirates' match-day squad and some featured in their last two Betway Premiership games against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Lamontville Golden Arrows. A major part of Pirates coach José Riveiro's success in his three years at Bucs — and especially this season, as Pirates won a third successive MTN8 trophy, reached a Champions League final and pushed for the Betway Premiership title — has been derived from the energy brought by some talented young players. Bucs can also add a third successive Nedbank Cup trophy if they beat Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday's final at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium. Relebohile Mofokenge, 20; Mbekezeli Mbokazi, 19; and Mohau Nkota, 20, have not just been regulars but star players for Pirates in 2024-25. Striker Boitumelo Radiopane, 23, has featured less but scored a goal in 10 matches in all competitions in his first season back from two loan spells at Cape Town Spurs. Right-back Siyabonga Ndlozi, 22, has played seven league games. In the last two matches two more of Bucs' emerging generation being produced from a youth system clearly showing results have seen first team action. Winger Yanga Madiba, 23, started in Tuesday's 2-1 win against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Central midfielder Simphiwe Selepe, 20, came off the bench having done the same in the win by the same scoreline in the league derby win against Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday. Riveiro is resisting taking personal credit for giving so many young players a chance, saying this is part of a bigger project and vision for the club's future that includes the input of its management. 'It's not really Riveiro giving them opportunities, it's Pirates,' the Pirates coach said after the win against Arrows. 'I'm not that coach who's coming here and doing things on my own. We're all part of a project. I'm the person you see sitting here every day and on the bench too, but there's much more going on. Shades of prime Zinedine Zidane 🔥 This turn from Kabelo Dlamini 🥵 #BetwayPrem | #SSDiski — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 6, 2025 'I'm doing my job as a coach to help those players be ready and when they're ready they're coming in and they're delivering right now. There are a lot of things happening before the players come to me or to us as a coaching staff. 'I'm so happy to work with these types of players and this type of talent. They're players who still want to be something in football and in sport. It's so nice to be part of the beginning on many careers. 'It's something special and memorable for the boys but it's also memorable for us as a coaching staff, as a group and as a family. But again, it's not only me, it's Orlando Pirates and I've said that already 2,000 times. 'We have a clear vision, and we know where we want to go as a club and we're trying to do the right things at the right moment. As a team we can be satisfied with that development.' If Pirates win on Saturday, Riveiro, who will leave the club at the end of the season, will make history becoming the first coach to win six successive derby matches in all competitions and will depart South Africa having won six domestic cup trophies. The 47-year-old Spaniard said he does not feel under pressure to field young players in every game now they have gained exposure and popularity. 'No, it's not a problem and it's not a headache,' he said Riveiro about his options for Saturday's final after Karim Kimvuidi, another non-regular, earned a man-of-the-match against Arrows. 'It's an opportunity for us to use our players and have resources and for Karim to be consistent the next time he gets a chance. That's the most important quality in a football player and in a football team. 'We cannot be 100% fair with a squad of 37 players. They have to be patient and keep working.' Riveiro said among the reasons he did not play some regulars against Arrows was to rest them for Saturday's final.

Golden Arrows, Chippa United look to cement their top eight ambitions
LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows will be looking at the likes of Nduduzo Sibiya and Knox Mutizwa to lead them to the top eight. BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix AFTER beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 last weekend, Lamontville Golden Arrows should surely believe they have no business losing to Chippa United as the two top eight-chasing sides meet in the Betway Premiership on Saturday, right? But then again, arguments can be made that Chiefs is not the same mighty South African football kings they used to be, after all Arrows' was their second loss after lowly Richards Bay dished them a 2-1 drubbing in their preceding league game. Indeed, that very Chiefs is deep in the fight for a top eight spot with seven games remaining to end the season. AFTER beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 last weekend, Lamontville Golden Arrows should surely believe they have no business losing to Chippa United as the two top eight-chasing sides meet in the Betway Premiership on Saturday, right? The fact though is that no matter which way one looks at it, the top eight battle is the most open one as far as the 2024/2025 Premiership season is concerned. Any team from the third-placed Stellenbosch all the way to the 10th-positioned Arrows can still finish in or out of that bracket. That is the case until one looks at the virus of inconsistency that haunts the Premiership, and so maybe leads to the exoneration of the likes of Stellenbosch and TS Galaxy (third and fourth with 35 points), Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City who both stand at sixth and fifth with 34 points respectively. Knox Mutizwa has 6️⃣3️⃣ goals of Golden Arrows in all comps. Thats more goals than any player has ever scored for the old underachieving Orlando Pirates since 1937😩#Sundowns Nabi Kaizer Chiefs — Mnca-Mnce 🍬 (@Mnca_mnce) March 30, 2025
