Cody Bellinger has fit the New York Yankees like a glove, making the December trade with the Chicago Cubs an absolute steal.
For the low price of since-released pitcher Cody Poteet, the Yankees got Bellinger and a $5 million cash prize to boot. All the two-time All-Star has done since is become the Yankees' second-best position player behind Aaron Judge, rack up 3.6 bWAR, and endear himself to a tough-to-please fan base.
Of course, Bellinger also has a decision forthcoming. It's a decision that seems more obvious by the day, but it's one the Yankees still might be dreading.

(Photo by)As he enters the final year of what was originally a three-year, $80 million contract signed with the Cubs before last season, Bellinger can opt out of a $25 million salary and pursue free agency.
On Thursday, CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted that Bellinger would indeed exercise that opt-out, forcing the Yankees to outbid the other 29 teams if they want him back.
"(Bellinger has) fit in so well with the Yankees that I would expect them to pursue a reunion, but an extension that makes the opt out moot would surprise me," wrote Axisa. "Bellinger still is a Scott Boras client, after all, and Boras typically takes his clients out into free agency. To keep him, the Yankees would likely have to win a free-agent bidding war."
Next year, Bellinger will still be only 30 for the first half of the season. He's been in our lives as baseball fans for a long time, having won Rookie of the Year back in 2017, but he's still got a lot of game left to play, and most importantly, he's aging well even after a rough couple of years.
The Yankees saw one star outfielder leave last winter in Juan Soto. Bellinger, while he doesn't have Soto's pure hitting genius, would be nearly as tough a loss to stomach.

Yankees Could Poach 'Obvious Fit' Alex Bregman from Red Sox: Report

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees tried to solve their third base woes by trading for Ryan McMahon. However, he is hitting just .245 with the team and may not be part of the team's long-term plans. The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal last offseason, but he figures to opt out after the year. He will be one of the hottest names on the market, and MLB insider Jim Bowden tabbed the Yankees as an "obvious fit." Bregman found his All-Star form again with the Red Sox. He is slashing .299/.379/.542 through 76 games. He has set himself up for a massive payday this offseason. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 11: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox waves to the crowd during the pregame ceremony before the game against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 11, 2025 in Houston, Texas. MoreHe bet on himself by taking a short-term deal with opt-outs, and now he may be one of the most coveted free agents. Even if he wants to stay with the Red Sox, he will have plenty of other teams trying to get him. "It appears Boston would be his first choice in free agency, but he is an obvious fit with several other contending teams including the (Philadelphia) Phillies, (New York) Yankees, (Detroit) Tigers, (Los Angeles) Dodgers, (Seattle) Mariners and even the (New York) Mets," wrote Bowden. Bregman is a three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, Gold Glover and World Series champion. He has also been praised as a leader in the Red Sox clubhouse. The Yankees could trade McMahon after just a couple of months on the team and make Bregman their third baseman for years to come. Cody Bellinger Expected to Opt Out With Yankees, Seek Long-Term Deal

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees know they run the risk of losing in Cody Bellinger in free agency. Bellinger has an opt-out in his contract after the season ends, and MLB insider Jim Bowden from The Athletic believes he will hit the market in search of a long-term contract. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 11: Cody Bellinger #35 of the New York Yankees hits a solo home run during the first inning of the game against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium on August 11, 2025 in New York City. More"Bellinger has been a perfect fit playing half his games at Yankee Stadium, with the short porch in right helping him hit 22 home runs," wrote Bowden. "He also has an .816 OPS and 10 stolen bases. His above-average defense at all three outfield positions and first base helps his value. He is expected to opt out of his 2026 option so he can land a more lucrative, longer-term deal." It makes sense that Bellinger would try to get a long-term deal this offseason. He's 30 years old now, and this might be his last chance to get a major, long-term contract. With the CBA expiring after next season and a lockout looking likely, Bellinger will certainly want the extra security. Currently, he is making $27.5 million with the Yankees. If he were to stay in his current contract, he would be playing on a $25 million player option next year. Spotrac currently shows Bellinger's market value at a six-year contract worth $131.5 million -- an average of $21.92 million per year. If Bellinger were to become a free agent, the Yankees would more than likely be one of the teams pursuing him aggressively. He's done well for them this season and benefits from the short porch in right as Bowden pointed out. Add to that a weak group of center field free agents, and it makes sense that Bellinger will be sought after by the biggest contenders. Caitlin Clark injury update: Is Fever guard playing today against Mystics?

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has been out with a right groin injury for nearly a month, leaving many fans wondering when the All-Star guard will make her return to the court. Clark will miss the Fever's matchup against the Washington Mystics on Friday, her 12th consecutive absence since suffering the groin injury July 15. Clark, who previously missed time with a left quad and a left groin injury, has been sidelined 20 of the Fever's 33 games this season. Indiana is 8-5 with Clark in the lineup and 10-10 without her on the floor. Clark's lengthy absence marks uncharted territory for the 2024 Rookie of the Year, who never missed a game during her four years at Iowa or during her rookie campaign with the Fever. "I've never been through anything like this, which is probably why it's been so hard," Clark said during a Aug. 8 episode of Sue Bird's podcast, "Bird's Eye View." "I've never really dealt with injury. It's probably been a challenge in itself because when I was first feeling pain, I didn't understand it." Clark isn't the only injury Indiana is navigating. The Fever lost guards Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) to season-ending injuries, further depleting the team's depth at point guard. The Fever signed guard Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract on Sunday and guard Kyra Lambert to a seven-day contract on Thursday. Here's what we know about Clark's injury status, including a full injury timeline: Is Caitlin Clark playing Friday? Injury status for Fever-Mystics Clark (right groin injury) will likely be ruled out of the Fever's matchup against the Washington Mystics on Friday in Indianapolis, which is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT) on ESPN. Indiana hasn't announced a timetable for Clark's return. Earlier this week, Fever coach Stephanie White said Clark has resumed running, but hasn't returned to practice just yet, meaning her return won't be anytime soon. If Clark is ruled out, Friday's game against the Mystics would mark her 21st total absence of the year. How was Caitlin Clark injured? Clark suffered a right groin injury in the final minute of the Fever's 85-77 victory over the Sun at TD Garden in Boston on July 15. With 39.1 seconds remaining in the contest, Clark completed a bounce pass to Kelsey Mitchell to put the Fever up 84-75. After the pass, Clark immediately grabbed for her right groin and grimaced as she gingerly walked over and headbutted the stanchion. She did not return to the game. Caitlin Clark injury timeline Caitlin Clark stats Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and a career-high 8.8 assists in 13 games this season. Her assists average is the second-highest in the league, behind Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas (9.0). The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
