Shardul Thakur made a strong case for selection in the upcoming Test series against England by smashing a defiant century on the final day of the intra-squad game between India and India A in Beckenham. Thakur, who last represented India in the first Test against South Africa in December 2023, remained unbeaten 122 on Sunday while playing for India A.
What made his knock even more impressive was the fact that he scored those runs against an attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh – all of whom are India's first-choice pacers for the series that gets underway on Friday in Headingley, Leeds.

Thakur had also impressed with the ball earlier in the game and was among the wickets, troubling newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill as well as KL Rahul and Karun Nair – who has earned a Test recall in the tour of England after eight years in the wilderness.
Intra-squad match called off halfway into the third day
The Indian team management decided to call off the intra-squad game, which was supposed to end on Monday, 16 June, halfway into the third day, with nearly eight sessions being played during the course of the warm-up game.
Thakur's heroics in Beckenham have ensured captain Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have a real headache when it comes to choosing between the Mumbaikar and fellow seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Thakur was not part of India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia – their last Test assignment – while Reddy played all five matches, scoring a memorable century in Melbourne.
However, the fact that Thakur's 'golden arm' comes in handy for the team when it comes to getting breakthroughs as well as the fact that Reddy has hardly made an impact as a bowler might result in the former's name getting included in the team sheet.
The match also witnessed middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan – who has not been included in the squad for the England Tests – smash a 76-ball 101 for India A . Additionally, Gill and Rahul scored half-centuries to help India post 469 on the board.
Bumrah, meanwhile, had gone wicketless while Siraj and Krishna collected a couple of wickets each, with Reddy bagging one.

Team India will leave for Leeds on Tuesday, 17 June – a day after the warm-up game was scheduled to conclude and three days before the series opener against Ben Stokes' men gets underway.

Vadodara to host men's ODI after 16 years!

Vadodara: The 16-year-long wait for cricket-loving Barodians is finally set to end. The city will host a men's one-day international (ODI) at the Kotambi International Cricket Stadium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BCCI has scheduled the first ODI between India and New Zealand in Vadodara on Jan 11, 2026. Coincidentally, the last ODI played in the city in 2010 was also between India and New Zealand at the Reliance Stadium. India won the match by nine wickets. "It is a matter of privilege for a venue to be chosen to host an international cricket match in any format. The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) is honoured as it has been given an opportunity to host the India-New Zealand ODI," said Pranav Amin, BCA president. The BCCI recently announced its cricketing calendar for the rest of the year, but Vadodara didn't figure on the list of venues for any international men's cricket match in 2025. Sources in the BCA said that Amin took up the matter with the BCCI and requested the senior officials to consider the city as a venue for the men's ODI or international T20 match, as the city now has a brand new international cricket stadium. BCA officials said that the city will now be regularly allotted ODIs and international T20 matches. The city has in the past hosted 10 ODIs at Reliance Stadium. However, the BCCI brought in a rule that mandated the state cricket associations to own a stadium for hosting international matches. The BCA didn't have a stadium of its own and hence missed out on several opportunities to host ODIs, T20 internationals, and IPL matches over the last 16 years. The cricket stadium was a major poll issue in the BCA for nearly 20 years, and the association even made a few attempts to buy land for constructing a stadium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The deals, though, failed. The BCA finally managed to buy a piece of land at Kotambi in 2014, but the stadium project kept hanging in the balance amid controversies and differences within the BCA management. Construction of the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000 spectators, finally took off in 2020. In December 2024, the Rs 250-crore Kotambi stadium hosted an India-West Indies women's ODI, which was followed by Women's Premier League T20 matches this year. VVS Laxman To Spearhead India's Preparations In Gautam Gambhir's Absence: Report

Last Updated: Gautam Gambhir returned to India earlier this week due to a medical emergency in his family. He is expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the first Test. Former India batter VVS Laxman is expected to oversee India's preparation for the first Test against England until the return of India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who is still in India, tending to his ill mother. The first Test of the five-match series between India and England is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24. As per a leading media website, Laxman, who also leads the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is already in London ahead of India Under-19s' month-long tour of the United Kingdom. The junior side will play five youth ODIs starting June 27, with two youth Tests scheduled for Beckenham and Chelmsford in July. In Gambhir's absence, the former India great also guided a second-string India team in a T20 series in South Africa late last year and was also India's head coach for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in July 2024, where, for the first time in his career, Shubman Gill captained Team India. Gambhir returned to India on Friday India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Friday returned to the country after his mother, Seema Gambhir, had to be hospitalised due to a health emergency, a BCCI source told PTI. The source said Gambhir had to fly back to attend to his mother, who suffered a heart attack and is currently in the ICU in a New Delhi hospital. The Shubman Gill-led Indian Test squad is in the UK to play a five-match series against England starting June 20 in Leeds. 'Gautam's mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday, and they have reached Delhi," the BCCI source informed. In Gambhir's absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is assuming the team's charge during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, which begins on Friday. He is having assistance from other coaching staff, such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Gambhir is expected to return to England in a week's time if everything goes well at his home. 'His mother is showing signs of recovery, although she is still in the ICU. In all likelihood, he will be back in the UK before the start of the opening Test (starting June 20) if all goes well." First Published:
