Time of India11-07-2025
Ludhiana: Miles away from home, Tilakraj, a Nepal national, had been struggling to make ends meet for quite some time. It was not easy. A prolonged bout of ill-health had disrupted his meagre earnings as a labourer.

Eventually, he moved to Ludhiana in search for work and livelihood, but this is where he met his death. The 45-year-old, who had come from Haryana a few months ago, was having a post-dinner walk on Thursday night, when two men came on a scooter, stabbed him and sped away. On the rooftop of the rented accommodation, the victim's teenaged son witnessed his father's violent end and froze, horrified.
He later told the police that he had seen the accused before but did not know their names.
Police suspect that rivalry may have been the murder motive.
Tilakraj, who originally belonged to Nepal, had been living in Kurukshetra, Haryana, with his family for years. About five months ago, he moved to Ludhiana for work and got a rented house in Gujjar Bhawan, Meharban area.
Tilakraj's son, Danish, 18, said that his father was walking outside the house after dinner while he was standing on the terrace with a friend, when the two men stabbed his father.
He added that the accused did not speak to Tilakraj or try to rob him. His father's mobile phone was inside the house, and he only had Rs 200 in his pocket, which the accused did not snatch.
The family rushed Tilakraj to a nearby clinic, where the doctor asked them to take him to hospital. However, he succumbed on the way.
Inspector Paramdeep Singh, SHO, Meharban police station, said, "According to the victim's son, who has witnessed the murder, the accused only stopped near Tilakraj, stabbed him once, and escaped.

Police suspect rivalry as a reason behind the murder. The victim's son also told the police that he has seen the accused before but does not know their names."
During investigation, police found that the men had been asking for directions to Tilakraj's house. Tilakraj, who used to work as a labourer, had been jobless for some time due to health issues. He was suffering from jaundice and other health ailments, confirmed the police.
He is survived by his wife and five children, including three sons.

Fatehpur incident: AAP seeks probe by ex-HC judge

Lucknow: The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that the Fatehpur incident be investigated by an inquiry committee under a former high court judge. Calling for strict action against those guilty and also officials who allowed this to take place, AAP accused BJP of spreading fanaticism and religious hatred. AAP's Imran Latif described the incident as an example of UP's deteriorating law and order. "BJP's Fatehpur district president announced on Aug 11 that Hindu organisations would perform rituals at the tomb, but administration and police did not intervene. For over half an hour, chaos prevailed at the site in presence of police force, and officials remained silent spectators. It shows the incident occurred under govt protection," he said. tnn AAP's outgoing state general secretary Dinesh Patel said that BJP has used such tactics to divert attention from serious issues like SIR, school closures, and mergers by spreading religious frenzy from time to time. He claimed that the local intelligence units had prior information about the incident, yet the administration did not prevent it. Harbhajan Singh condemns attack on elderly Sikh man in US, calls for swift justice

Expressing 'deep concern and outrage' over the brutal assault on 70-year-old Sikh man Harpal Singh in the US's North Hollywood, former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Harbhajan Singh Tuesday calling the incident 'an attack not just on the victim but on the values of humanity, diversity and mutual respect'. Harbhajan shared a purported video of the incident on his X handle, allegedly showing the elderly man covered in blood sitting on the ground, and stated: 'I am deeply shocked and outraged by the horrific hate crime in North Hollywood, where a 70-year-old Sikh man Shri Harpal Singh was brutally assaulted, leaving him in a medically induced coma. 'It is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime face the full weight of the law. I strongly urge @POTUS and U.S. authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly. Justice must not only be done, but also be seen to be done. 'My thoughts, prayers, and unwavering solidarity are with Harpal Ji and his family during this unimaginably painful time. Wishing him strength and recovery.' According to reports, a few days ago, a cyclist violently attacked Harpal Singh. According to local police, an eyewitness confirmed the incident, but no suspect has yet been identified. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to trace the attacker. According to US media reports, the incident occurred around 3 pm on August 4 when an unidentified man assaulted Singh near a convenience store. It is learnt that Harpal Singh, who lives near Lankershim Gurdwara in North Hollywood, is a retired mathematics professor. According to the American Sikh Council (ASC), which expressed deep concern, 'Prof Singh, a quiet man of devoted nature, is currently admitted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Centre in a critical condition. Doctors have performed at least three surgeries so far, including procedures to remove blood from his brain and to treat injuries to his eyes.' He remains semi-conscious in the ICU, say reports from the US. 'He sustained severe head and facial injuries and was targeted due to his faith, ethnicity and appearance. Locals described Singh as a gentle soul often seen feeding birds in a nearby park and participating in community service, such as preparing langar and reciting prayers at the gurdwara. It is unimaginable that anyone would deliberately harm him,' a victim's relative told mediapersons. Harbhajan condemned the assault as a 'hate crime' and urged law enforcement agencies in the US to take swift and strict action. 'Such attacks not only affect the victim and their family but also cause deep mental and emotional distress to the entire community,' Harbhajan said, adding that authorities must send a strong message that hatred has no place in any society. Citing FBI data, the ASC said, 'A total of 142 hate crimes were reported against Sikh Americans in 2024, making them the third most targeted community in the US.' ASC president Bibi Jasbir Kaur said, 'The act is not only condemnable but also calls for swift action from law enforcement authorities against the accused. The entire community condemns such acts and stands united to ensure the safety and dignity of all Sikhs.'

Delhi HC directs ED to bring copies of sanction to prosecute Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia in excise policy case

The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Enforcement Directorate to bring on record the copy of requisite sanction to prosecute AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in the alleged excise policy scam case. Justice Ravinder Dudeja passed the order on an application filed by the politicians who challenged the trial court decision to take cognisance of the ED chargesheet in the case, citing lack of mandatory prosecution sanction . "The proceedings suffered from the absence of the mandatory prosecution sanction," the counsel claimed. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, opposed the petition, claiming that the requisite sanction had been obtained and placed before the trial court. The CBI and the ED have alleged that irregularities were committed in modifying Delhi's excise policy, with undue favours extended to certain license holders under the AAP government. The policy, introduced on November 17, 2021, was scrapped in September 2022 following corruption allegations.
