'I tested chocolate from every supermarket and this £1 bar is better than Cadbury'

'I tested chocolate from every supermarket and this £1 bar is better than Cadbury'

Daily Record21-04-2025
For the past few days, many of us will have indulged in quite a bit of chocolate. However, like many things in life, Easter eggs can get a bit pricey these days.
For those who still want to indulge their sweet tooth without the expense, then a simple bar of chocolate poses a suitable alternative - and pretty much everyone knows that Cadbury remains one of the most beloved brands.
That being said, many supermarket own brands can sometimes pose a more affordable, and often better tasting, option. Which is exactly why one reporter decided to try them all out to find if this was the case.
Senior Lifestyle Reporter Angela Patrone from the Express recently pit the iconic chocolate brand against high-end and bargain supermarket options, with bars bought from the likes of Aldi, Lidl, M&S, Waitrose and more.
Finding one budget bar that reminded her of the beloved Magic Stars from her childhood, the reporter detailed her thought on each confection, which we have provided in her full words just below.
Morrisons
Retailing for 80p, this tasted like your standard run-of-the-mill chocolate bar, slightly sweet and creamy, but nothing special.
The smooth texture was delightful, but sadly, the chocolate didn't build on that with no memorable taste notes or even an aftertaste.
Rating: 5/10
Sainsbury's
This chocolate bar was much nicer than Morrisons' and melted in the mouth much more easily.
The 75p bar also had a lovely taste, which was not too artificial like some chocolates can be.
Rating: 6/10
Tesco
This 55p chocolate bar from Tesco reminds me of cooking chocolate, and not in a good way.
The chocolate from Tesco tasted like it was trying to imitate a mix of Galaxy and Dairy Milk, but very poorly.
It has a chemical undertaste and melts quickly into a thin layer of chocolate rather than oozy goodness.
Rating: 3/10
Aldi
Aldi is known for its affordable items that won't put a hole in your wallet. Aldi has its Everyday Essentials range, which is supposedly cheaper than its other manufactured brands.
Costing 59p for a 100g bar, the taste was very disappointing. It was rather salty and had a strange aftertaste to it. I felt it didn't really taste like chocolate, but as if it were some overly sweetened candy.
Rating: 3/10
Lidl
After tasting the Aldi chocolate bar, I didn't have much hope for this one, but it impressed me massively.
Lidl is known for its cheap products, so it was the first place on my mind when I thought about an affordable chocolate bar. Slightly more than Aldi, the bar cost me £1.09, weighing 100g.
In terms of taste and quality, it really took me by surprise. It was sweet, smooth, and the chocolate melted in my mouth. It brought me back to my childhood as it reminded me so much of Magic Stars. I would say it was better than Cadbury in terms of taste and value.
Rating: 9/10
Asda
For me, the Asda chocolate bar is on par with Tesco and Aldi, just ever so slightly better.
Coming in at 59p per 100g, the chocolate bar was sweet, but it didn't melt in the mouth like a typical chocolate bar would.
Rating: 3.5/10
Waitrose
Costing £2.75, this was one of the most expensive chocolate bars in this taste test, but also ended up being the worst one.
While I can appreciate the thick and smooth texture it had, it tasted very strong, and not in a good way.
Rating: 2/10
M&S
M&S was the last of the supermarket brands, and I had high expectations for this one.
M&S have a range of delicious chocolate sweet treats all year round that receive glowing reviews, however, their cheapest milk chocolate is not something I'd repurchase.
Retailing at £2.75 like the Waitrose chocolate bar, it lacked that sweetness and creaminess you'd expect from a milk chocolate bar.
Rating 4/10
Cadbury
Last up we have Cadbury. Straight away you are hit with a waft of chocolate to the nostrils when you open up the bar.
Milk chocolate often contains a fatty coating in the harder centre, which Cadbury often perfects, but how would the iconic brand fare this time around? Very well is the answer; however, for me, it was a little too sweet.
Rating: 8/10
Verdict
Out of all the chocolate bars, Lidl came up as the top contender. Whilst the Cadbury bar was enjoyable, the Lidl chocolate bar just had the edge.

With households feeling the effects of the continuing inflation and rising cost of living, more Brits are looking for ways they can save money. Laura White, an expert in money saving tips and deals, alerted her Instagram followers to something she had spotted in Tesco that she believes could save them 'a lot of money.' ‌ The savvy shopper noticed that the supermarket has recently released a range of fragrances by Skin Saints that smell similar to various high end brands. She said: 'If you are a Carolina Herrera Good Girl fan, this fragrance called Passion could be for you. ‌ 'It's meant to smell just like Good Girl. [The] price comparison is very different though as you can get this 100ml bottle for just £7 with your Clubcard.' ‌ The Carolina Herrera Good Girl perfume is recognised by its striking stiletto-shaped bottle and it costs £139 for the 100ml size when purchased directly from the brand online. Continuing to explore the Skin Saints range in Tesco, Laura added: 'They've also got a fragrance called Rouge which is really similar to the iconic Baccarat Rouge 540. 'Again this is just £7 for the 100ml bottle.' The next product she highlighted was Santal, which has a sandalwood and warm spice scent, similar to the luxury Santal 33 by Le Labo. The Instagram user also spotted the Cerise fragrance, which she explained has been likened to Lost Cherry by Tom Ford. Laura concluded that the Skin Saints products can make 'great money-saving alternatives.' All of the ones she displayed in her clip are £7 with a Tesco Clubcard or £8 without. ‌ The post has attracted thousands of views, hundreds of likes and several comments. An impressed viewer remarked: 'Oooohh I've never seen these in my local Tesco. Amazing.' A second shared: 'I love the Santal.' Another exclaimed: 'Oh my goodness now Tesco!!! We're calling it– Tesco F&F's animal print jeans will be everywhere this autumn

"Affordable, flattering, fun and perfect for pairing with knits" Though the weather has heated up this week, many of us are more than aware we're in the final few weeks of summer. So, instead of mourning the passing of the sunny season, we've been looking ahead to autumn dressing. One key buy that's just hit shelves is F&F at Tesco's latest denim offering, the F&F Edit Leopard Print Wide Leg Jeans in Brown. Priced at a very affordable £25, they hit Tesco's online shop yesterday and are currently fully stocked in all sizes. However, considering how fast the rest of the autumn range flew off virtual shelves, you'll be lucky to find these in your size by next week. Our head of fashion Zoe also predicts they're about to become the new 'Zara spotty dress' for autumn (ie, the 'it' buy you'll be seeing everyone wearing. Zoe says: "Snake print, leopard print and cow print, oh my! Animal prints are well and truly back for autumn/winter, but they're set to look a lot more elevated than the cheap prints of years gone. These F&F jeans are a perfect example of animal print but in a more muted colour palette and in a cool cut. My top tip? Get them before they're gone! As soon as TikTok finds out these have dropped, you won't be seeing them on shelves in your size." With their muted tone, on-trend print and statement wide-leg shape, they bring a serious dose of style to your supermarket run. Made from a cotton-blend with just the right amount of stretch, they feel so comfy to wear and look far more expensive than their £25 price tag suggests. The high-rise waist gives a flattering fit that nips you in before flowing into a wide leg that skims the hips and thighs. A five-pocket design and zip fly keep things practical, while the brown tones match perfectly with knitwear and tops of all neutral colouring. I paired them with F&F's (another sell-out buy for autumn, I predict), but I'd also wear them with a simple brown cami top like Free People's Fresh in Love Tank in double espresso, £24, for this warm weather week we're having. Elsewhere, and on the subject of animal print, another buy that won't be around for long is Adidas Originals SL 72 OG trainers in cow print, £90 and exclusive to ASOS. They've just been restocked in the cream and the brown colourways, and look perfect paired with denim.

Aldi to launch hot air brush that is over £37 cheaper than viral TikTok favourite

The styling tool is still a must have with over 40million views on TikTok alone. Looking to get a salon blowout from home? Then many beauty enthusiasts will recommend investing in a hot air brush. ‌ Famed for their ability to deliver smooth, voluminous styles with minimal effort, there's no wonder why the styling tool still remains hot property with over a staggering 40million views on TikTok alone. ‌ Now Aldi is joining the current hair craze trend by announcing that its very own Hot Air Brush is set to land in its middle aisle section very soon, and it will save over £37 compared to a bestseller on the market. ‌ Arriving as part of its popular Specialbuys selection on Thursday, August 21, the supermarket's hair styler will come with a price-tag of just £12.99, making it one of the cheapest options on the market. Before we get into Aldi's styling tool, it's worth noting that it is reminiscent of the TikTok-loved Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumiser that is said to be so popular it has sold over two million units. With the bestselling branded tool often costing £50 at many retailers on the high street, the budget grocer's own version will allow beauty fans join in on the trend with a decent saving of £37.01. In fact, our own Fashion & Beauty Writer Rachel Williams got her hands on the viral brush back in 2023 and confirmed it was "a game-changer for people who struggle with hair styling." Sharing how it helped her transform her flat hair with some extra volume, she said: "It is an ideal hair tool for those who are looking to save some time, while still achieving shiny hair with a bit of a boost without needing to spend money on a trip to the hairdressers." ‌ As for Aldi's upcoming Hot Air Brush, it looks to be boasting a very similar large, round-barrel shape design that will help to lift the hair from the roots to create that enviable bounce. Said to be suitable to use on wet and dry hair, alongside long and short styles, the Hot Air Brush will feature 360-degree airflow and a swivel cord, making it "the perfect fuss-free solution for flawless, wedding-day waves or sleek, photo-ready locks." ‌ Similar to the Revlon brush, it also comes with large bristles that will glide through the hair, making it suitable for smoothing, detangling and giving extra volume all at the same time. While we are sure that the Hot Air Brush will catch the eye of many hair enthusiasts, it's not the only styling tool that will be landing in stores next week. ‌ Also arriving in the Specialbuys aisle on August 21 will be the returning Ionic Hairdryer for £12.99, with the styling tool becoming a bestseller among shoppers looking for a budget friendly option that will still protect their precious tresses. Available in a choice of yellow, orange, black or white, the much-loved hairdryer comes complete with three heat settings and two speed settings to personalise the styling routine, while a cool shot helps to set styles in place. To get a salon-quality finish from home, it will come complete with a concentrator and a diffuser attachment. Aldi's Hot Air Brush and Ionic Hairdryer will land in stores from Thursday, August 21. However, as with all Specialbuys, shoppers need to act fast, as once they are gone, they are gone.
