Cynthia Erivo Reveals How She Approached Elphaba Differently in ‘Wicked: For Good': ‘She's Delicious'

Yahoo03-06-2025
After her massive breakthrough as Elphaba in 2024's Wicked, Cynthia Erivo is giving fans a taste of what's to come in the film's final chapter this fall.
In her Billboard cover story published Monday (June 2), Erivo teases what fans can expect from her green-skinned heroine in Wicked: For Good, the much-anticipated second part of the film due out this November. 'Elphaba in act one, or film one, it's head and heart … Elphaba in act two is head, sacral,' Erivo tells Billboard Pride editor Stephen Daw, explaining her use of chakras to differentiate Elphaba's transformation across the two films. 'It's grounded. It's really earthy, feet-on-the-ground. She's able to access her rage more.'

That change in her gravity-defying character also meant Erivo had to take a different approach to portraying her while filming. 'The scent I wore changed. The makeup changed,' she explains. 'Little shifts that bring you to a more mature version of who Elphaba becomes. And she is delicious in this next one.'
The upcoming film will look to replicate the breakout success of its predecessor, which went on to become the highest grossing film adaptation of a musical, earned 10 Oscar nominations (including a best actress nom for Erivo) and scored a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200 with its soundtrack. 'The cast was like, 'Oh, so it's just in the ether now? People are just listening to it on their way to work at this point?'' Erivo says of the soundtrack's success in particular. 'It's really wonderful.'
The interview comes just ahead of the release of Erivo's sophomore LP, I Forgive You (out Friday, June 6 via Verve and Republic Records), which sees the singer exploring uncharted new territory as a performer. As she tells to Billboard, her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande helped connect her with Republic Records' chairwoman and chief creative officer Wendy Goldstein to help make her LP shine.
'Wendy is a very singular human being who just gets it,' she says of meeting Goldstein. 'It was the first time that everything became really clear. To have someone who understands who you are as a musician and a singer and an artist was just a new experience within this space for me as an artist.'

Kendrick Lamar's Streaming Smashes Return — But Which One Is More Impressive?

Kendrick Lamar is one of the top-performing rap artists in America when it comes to sales, as his fans seem much more willing to purchase his music than many other stars in the field. While sales of both his albums and singles play a large role in his continued success, streaming activity may be even more responsible for his presence on the Billboard charts. Several of Lamar's recent smashes return to streaming-only rankings in the United States, and he climbs on multiple tallies dedicated to the consumption metric. '30 for 30" with SZA is Back Two Lamar tracks find their way back to streaming-only tallies this frame. Technically, the higher-rising of the two is '30 for 30.' His tour partner SZA recruited him for the track, which reappears at No. 25 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally. 30 weeks into its life on the most competitive of all the streaming rankings that focus on R&B, hip-hop and rap, the cut barely makes it back as it lands in last place. 'Not Like Us' Returns to the Main Streaming Chart 'Not Like Us,' which may go down as Lamar's most famous and celebrated tune, is back on the Streaming Songs chart this week. In its sixty-first frame, the Drake diss tune reappears in last place at No. 50. While that is a much lower position than '30 for 30' manages on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs roster, it may be more impressive that 'Not Like Us' can be found on the Streaming Songs tally. The chart isn't focused on just one or several styles, which makes it that much more competitive. Also, 'Not Like Us' is much older than '30 for 30,' so the fact that it once again ranks as one of the 50-most-played tunes of any style or language throughout the United States is quite the feat. Kendrick Lamar Owns 20% of the Streaming List 'Not Like Us' is one of two tracks by Lamar that appear on the general Streaming Songs roster, as 'Luther,' another duet with SZA, rises two spaces to No. 31. When it comes to the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs tally, however, Lamar is far more successful this time around. He fills five spaces, occupying 20% of the list. His roundup includes 'Luther' with SZA, 'Not Like Us,' 'TV Off' with Lefty Gunplay, 'All the Stars,' yet another smash with SZA, and finally '30 for 30.' Those tracks appear at Nos. 3, 10, 17, 21 and 25, respectively.

Drake Blocked From A New No. 1 By One Of Rap's Most Successful Women

As is often the case, Drake has a number of singles present on multiple Billboard charts this week. The Canadian superstar recently delivered a pair of new tunes — 'What Did I Miss?' and 'Which One' with Central Cee — only a few months after sharing a full-length, Some Sexy Songs 4 U, with PartyNextDoor. A number of tunes from that project are also performing well, even as Drake seems ready to move on. Drake almost sends one of his most recent releases to No. 1, but one of the most successful women in hip-hop history blocks him from ruling, at least for the moment. 'What Did I Miss?' Climbs to No. 2 Drake's 'What Did I Miss?' rises to No. 2 on the Rhythmic Airplay chart, one of Billboard's radio rosters centered around hip-hop. Five weeks into its life on the tally, 'What Did I Miss?' almost conquers the ranking, but another current smash blocks it from becoming the rapper's record-extending forty-third champion. Cardi B Sends 'Outside' to No. 1 This week's Rhythmic Airplay is led by Cardi B, who brings 'Outside' to No. 1 for the first time. Last week, the tune sat at No. 3, and now it's another chart ruler for her. Cardi lands her ninth career No. 1 on the Rhythmic Airplay chart as 'Outside,' a single from her forthcoming sophomore album Am I the Drama?, ascends. She has now led the charge with all of the following successes: 'I Like It' with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, 'Bodak Yellow (Money Moves),' 'Finesse' with Bruno Mars, 'No Limit' with G-Eazy and ASAP Rocky, 'WAP' with Megan Thee Stallion, 'Please Me' (another collaboration with Mars), and 'Be Careful.' Drake's 'Which One' With Central Cee Debuts While he might not score another No. 1 just yet, Drake does collect a new hit on the Rhythmic Airplay chart, as 'Which One,' which features U.K. artist Central Cee, opens at No. 29. Drake has now racked up 135 wins on the radio roster. He fills a trio of spaces on the tally this time around, as 'Nokia' drops outside of the top 10, falling from No. 8 to No. 11. 'What Did I Miss?' Lifts on All Radio Rankings 'What Did I Miss?' is gaining ground on every radio chart on which it appears. The track lives inside the top 10 on the Rhythmic Airplay, Rap Airplay, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay lists, lifting to Nos. 2, 3, 7, and 8, respectively. Drake's cut also grows on the all-genre Radio Songs roster, pushing from No. 39 to No. 31 in its third turn on the tally.

Hayley Williams Charts Her First Solo No. 1 Hit

20 years ago, Hayley Williams emerged as one of the most exciting new female voices in rock music as the lead singer of the group Paramore. She broke barriers and found incredible success during the pop-punk revival in the early aughts, and in the decades since, Paramore has continued to chart big hits and successful albums. Williams has also embarked on a solo career — though not one which has distracted from her work with the band that made her well-known in the first place. Recently, Williams delivered a slew of new tunes for fans to enjoy, and while only one reaches the Billboard charts, it does help her score an important champion. Hayley Williams Scores Her First Solo No. 1 Williams's new track 'True Believer' launches at No. 1 on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart. As it arrives, the singer-songwriter scores her first leader on the list of the bestselling alternative tracks throughout the United States. Multiple Top 10 Bestsellers Williams has previously reached the Alternative Digital Song Sales list with three tracks, so her solo count is now up to four in total. One of them, 'Simmer,' opened at No. 10 in February of 2020, and until this frame, it held as her only top 10 success on the tally. 'True Believer' Launches at No. 5 'True Believer' also finds its way to the highest tier on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, where it opens at No. 5. The solo cut ties 'Simmer' as her highest-rising win, while a collaboration with the band Weezer, 'Rainbow Connection,' also reached No. 23 more than a decade ago. 'True Believer' Becomes a General Bestseller The new Williams cut sold just well enough to make it to one other Billboard tally, the Digital Song Sales chart. Unlike the other two rankings, which are focused entirely on one genre, the Digital Song Sales list is style-agnostic, and 'True Believer' opens in last place at No. 25. Luminate reports that in its first full tracking frame of availability, the tune sold just over 1,700 copies — barely enough to help it land on the competitive roster. 'Airplanes' with B.o.B and 'Stay the Night' with Zedd 'True Believer' is not one of Williams's biggest wins on the Digital Song Sales tally, as it comes in behind 'Airplanes' with B.o.B and 'Stay the Night' with Zedd, which peaked at Nos. 2 and 16, respectively. The new track does, however, beat her team-up with Taylor Swift, 'Castles Crumbling (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault),' which stalled at No. 36 back when the roster featured 50 spots. Hayley Williams Drops 17 New Solo Songs Williams has released two solo albums throughout her career — Petals for Armor and Flowers for Vases/Descansos — in 2020 and 2021, respectively. At the same time that 'True Believer' came out, Williams dropped another 16 tunes, which were not featured on any album or compilation, but were available for sale as individual cuts for fans to buy and enjoy.
