British woman held in Dubai 'hellhole' prison on drugs charges and unable to shower
A British recruitment consultant has been held in a Dubai hellhole prison for three months on drugs charges and has been unable to shower.
Isabella Daggett is understood have been arrested just five weeks after moving from Yorkshire to start a new job in the United Arab Emirates, reports the Mirror.
However, the family of the 21-year-old from Leeds insist she was taken by police simply for being 'in the wrong place at the wrong time' and has never used drugs. And she has not taken a shower or even changed her clothes in months after being banged up in a prison in March, her family claims.
While working for a businessman doing internet recruiting for construction sites in the UK, he offered to send her to the Middle East for a similar role. Not long after she arrived in Dubai, police there allegedly arrested her along with another man.
Heather Smith, her grandmother, told the DailyMail: "Bella has been locked up because she was in the wrong company. Wrong place, wrong time. Wrong boyfriend. The bloke she was working for said for her to come to Dubai, you'll love it there, the lifestyle is wonderful. Now she is locked up. But she is innocent because they have done all the tests and there was nothing in her system."
Mrs Smith said how Ms Daggett was being treated harshly inside the prison but thankfully was able to speak to her family regularly.
She continued: "She hasn't had a shower for a month, she hasn't had a change of clothes for three months. She has had nothing. Women get treated far worse than male prisoners, who get to go outside, they get sports, a PlayStation and a television - Bella has nothing."
Exactly what charges Ms Daggett faces have not been made public. Mrs Smith said: "She was arrested with a lad, who was not her boyfriend, with whom she was staying because things had fallen through with another house.
"She didn't really like him that much. He may be guilty of something, but she isn't. We told Bella before she went to Dubai, 'you know the rules in Dubai, play by the rules, don't flaunt this, don't do that'."
Ms Daggett's mum Lucinda Smith, with whom she ran a Leeds-based modelling agency, posted a GoFundMe page to help her daughter.
The fundraiser read: "My daughter Isabella has been wrongfully detained in Dubai, and we are doing everything we can to prove her innocence and bring her back home.
"We have proof she was not involved in these charges and are determined to fight for her freedom. The hideous conditions she is living in are enough to break any mother's heart.
"The legal and travel expenses are overwhelming, and we need your support. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help us cover the costs of legal fees, travel, and other necessary expenses."

Man jailed after stabbing neighbour and 'hunting down police' with crossbow

A man who stabbed a neighbour and shot an officer with a crossbow after attempting to 'hunt down' police has been jailed. On Wednesday, Aylesbury Crown Court heard Jason King had stabbed neighbour Alistair Mahwuto with a 'small knife' during an altercation which had arisen as a result of a 'long-standing' dispute. Police were called to the scene on School Close in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, where King shot repeatedly at officers with a crossbow out of his upstairs window before chasing them with the weapon and shooting an officer, the court was told. The 55-year-old was later shot once by police in the stomach after refusing to put down the weapon when confronted by officers, the court heard. On Wednesday, King was jailed for nine years with a further three years on extended licence having previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, having an article with a blade or point, having an offensive weapon, wounding with intent and affray regarding the incident on May 10 last year. The sentencing hearing heard that on the day before the shooting, King said his windows had been broken by a neighbour and had called police. Sentencing King, Judge Jonathan Cooper said he had been motivated in part during the shooting by 'revenge' and a 'sense of grievance' towards his neighbours and police who he believed had not handled the incident regarding his window appropriately. Judge Cooper said: 'I note that you purchased the crossbow, I don't accept it was for recreational purposes.' 'I consider that this was an attempt by you to arm yourself in the event of need,' he added. The judge said that King's actions, including chasing officers and continuing to shoot at them, were evidence of him 'attempting to settle a score with police'. 'It was as if you were trying to hunt down the officer, chasing him, aiming at his body,' he added. Prosecutor Graham Smith said the officer had seen King 'grinning' as he exited his address before shooting him in the leg, resulting in a two to three-centimetre wound near to an artery. King 'persisted' in pointing the crossbow at other officers who confronted him and, given that he had already shot an officer, police decided to shoot him, the prosecutor said. Mr Smith said it was the prosecution's case that it was 'great fortune' the officer who was shot had not suffered greater injuries and that King had appeared to be 'hunting' and 'stalking' the police. In a statement read to court, Mr Mahwuto, 63, who suffered a two-centimetre wound as a result of the stabbing, said the incident had 'affected me more than I would have ever imagined' and that a doctor had said his wound could have been fatal had it been a few centimetres higher. The officer shot by King said the incident had 'changed my outlook on life a bit', and that he feels more 'protective' about his colleagues now. In a statement read by Mr Smith, the officer said: 'I don't want anyone else to experience what I experienced, I hear jobs coming through on the radio and I don't want my colleagues going out to them.' He added that it had 'knocked' his confidence, and a doctor had told him the injury could have been 'catastrophic'. In mitigation, Mark Kimsey, defending, said King accepted the incident was 'very frightening' for those involved, and that he had been suffering from a 'worsening mental condition'. Mr Kimsey said it was 'not illegal' to possess the crossbow and that 'an adult is entitled to own an item without a licence'. He said: 'The item is one that can be freely purchased by anybody and cost less than £20 and was described as a 'pistol' crossbow.' Mr Kimsey added: 'It appeared at the time the defendant believed he was able to speak to the neighbour's dog, and speak in dog,' adding that King thought he had contact with an 'Egyptian god'. King, of School Close, High Wycombe, waved and made a heart gesture with his hands towards members of his family who were seated in the public gallery. The defendant, wearing a green long-sleeved top and a wooden beaded necklace, shook his head and interrupted the judge at points during the hearing. Former Nine O'Clock Service priest guilty of sexual offences against nine women
Christopher Brain was the leader of evangelical movement the Nine O'Clock Service between 1986 and 1995. A former priest who was the leader of evangelical movement the Nine O'Clock Service has been found guilty of sexual offences against nine women. Christopher Brain, 68, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, was the leader of the Nine O'Clock Service (NOS), part of the Church of England, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, between 1986 and 1995. He was found guilty by a jury at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday of 17 counts of indecent assault during the years he led the movement. The jury cleared him of 15 counts of indecent assault and are still deliberating on four counts of indecent assault and one of rape. Brain appeared unmoved in the dock as the verdicts were read out. Prosecutors previously told jurors that the NOS group was aimed at younger people and 'presented itself to the outside world as a progressive force for good'. They said NOS became a cult in which Brain abused his position to exert control over the lives of his female followers and ostracised them from friends and family. The court previously heard that a 'homebase team' was set up to 'care for' Brain – referred to as 'the Lycra Lovelies' or 'the Lycra Nuns' – and witnesses reported seeing the defendant surrounded by attractive women in lingerie at his home, looking after his needs. Prosecutor Tim Clark KC previously gave an overview of the offences, relaying accounts from complainants who made various claims, including that Brain groomed them and would touch them during massages. Brain told jurors that some massages, intended to be for 'tensions' on his body, could evolve into 'sensual touching', which he said was between friends and 'no big deal'. He denied touching anyone's breasts during massages while a part of NOS in Sheffield, but admitted doing so after his involvement. Brain said this was consensual and not forced. Brain rejected evidence from alleged victims that he had tried to control people by making them wear the same clothing or lose weight, or that he discouraged them from maintaining friendships. Biker faces raft of surgeries for broken hip bones after being 'forced off A87 by driver on wrong side of road'
A motorcyclist has relived the moment he plunged off a Highland road onto rocks to avoid a head-on collision on the A87. Gavin Lawrie was riding near Glen Shiel when he says he was met by a black BMW driving on the wrong side of the road. He had a split second to avoid a crash – with his efforts to evade the car sending him off the road. He has been bedbound since the incident and the ordeal compounds what he describes as a 'hellish' year following the death of his 22-year-old daughter six months ago. Mr Lawrie sustained serious injuries in the accident, suffering several fractures that will require extensive surgery to repair. He told The Press and Journal the car had not stopped – but fortunately there were other road users who came to his aid. The incident took place on the A87, near Glen Shiel, at about 4.30pm on Friday and has been reported to police. Mr Lawrie, from Kingussie, said: 'I had to make a split-second decision. He could hit me head-on, or I could put the throttle down, which is what I did. 'I remember being thrown onto the rocks. 'The car didn't stop, but two bikers did and they called the police and ambulance who arrived quickly.' The retired 58-year-old was taken to Broadford Hospital on Skye, where X-rays revealed two broken bones in his hip. He also has a suspected fracture in his right ankle and is now wearing a moon boot. 'I haven't been able to walk since Friday and I'm currently bedbound,' he said. 'I'm awaiting transfer to Raigmore Hospital, where I'll have a CT scan. They may need to pin my hip socket bone.' Mr Lawrie said if he hadn't been wearing protective clothing and a helmet, he'd been told by paramedics they 'would have been sweeping me off the rocks'. Mr Lawrie has faced many recent struggles, including the loss of his daughter, yet he remains a fighter. He said: 'The main thing is I'm still here. 'I've been through hell and back, but I've come to accept that my daughter's gone. 'My faith is strong, and I believe we will meet again. 'I live to tell the story.' Earlier this summer, police began giving tourists arriving in Scotland wristbands telling them to 'drive on the left' after a series of crashes across the country. The wristbands are the latest tool being used by officers in an attempt to reduce collisions. It has been a particular issue in the Highlands and islands in recent years.
