Student Found Dead In Yamuna Was An 'Overachiever' Pursuing Two Courses, Working As An Intern
Sneha Debnath, the 19-year-old student of Delhi University whose body was pulled from the Yamuna River on Wednesday, was described by her family and peers as a gifted and determined young woman balancing academics and professional commitments with remarkable discipline.
As reported by NDTV, Sneha was an 'overachiever"—a term her family used to describe her exceptional drive. She was pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, affiliated with Delhi University, and simultaneously enrolled in a data science and programming course with IIT Madras. According to her LinkedIn profile, she was also interning with an Australian company while maintaining an active academic life.
Originally from Tripura, Sneha had moved to Delhi with aspirations that extended far beyond her years. 'She didn't want money from anybody. She was earning, studying two things at once. Even though she was young, she was respected within the family," her cousin told NDTV.
In her LinkedIn bio, Sneha had written about her passions: 'I love talking about anything related to Mathematics, computer and the anime Monster."
Friends of the 19-year-old mentioned that Sneha had been upset in recent months, and while the cause remains unclear, some reports suggest it may be tied to family-related stress. Her father, Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) Pritish Debnath (Retd.), is reportedly suffering from kidney failure and undergoing dialysis.
Her disappearance on July 7 set off an anxious search, with her mother and sister Bipasha making frantic efforts to find her. Their worst fears were confirmed when Sneha's body was discovered near the Geeta Colony flyover.

Tamil Nadu Cops Seek Public Help In Child Rape Case, Post Photos Of Suspect
Chennai: The local police in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district have released images of an unidentified man and appealed to the public for information, nearly a week after a 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted. The disturbing incident has ignited serious concerns over child safety and the efficacy of protection systems in the state. CCTV footage, which has since circulated, shows the man stalking the minor girl before forcibly lifting her, according to initial police accounts. The police have formally registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and multiple special teams have been formed to trace the perpetrator, though no arrests have been made yet. "We have formed special teams and expect a breakthrough soon," a senior police officer told NDTV. The Tiruvallur Police had shared pictures of the suspect on their official social media, urging public assistance to identify him: The suspect in the photos/video is involved in a heinous crime of sexually assaulting a child. It is requested to communicate any information pertaining to him on 9952060948 — Thiruvallur District Police (@TNTVLRPOLICE) July 20, 2025 Child rights activists have voiced profound alarm, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers children face in public spaces and the existing gaps in surveillance, community vigilance, and awareness. "Every time a child is harmed, it's not just a law and order issue - it's a failure of the system meant to protect them," said an advocate who preferred to remain anonymous. The incident has also drawn political condemnation, with the AIADMK slamming the ruling DMK saying "There is no safety for women under the DMK rule". Former state BJP chief K Annamalai had earlier urged immediate action, warning that the suspect's freedom poses a continued threat to society. The crime comes amid a worrying rise in offenses against women and children across the state. The state police and the ruling DMK maintain that stringent action is being taken in each case. The authorities have pointed to recent fast-tracked trials and convictions - such as the life sentence awarded in the Anna University sexual assault case and another in which a pregnant woman was assaulted on a moving train - as evidence of their commitment to delivering justice.

Pit Bull Bites Child Inside Auto-Rickshaw In Mumbai, Owner Laughs
In Mumbai's Mankhurd, Mohammad Sohail Hasan allegedly set his Pit Bull on 11-year-old Hamza, who was playing in a rickshaw. Hasan laughed during the attack. A case was filed. A disturbing incident unfolded in Mumbai's Mankhurd area when a 43-year-old man, identified as Mohammad Sohail Hasan, allegedly set his Pit Bull on an 11-year-old boy, intentionally unleashing the dog's aggression. The child, Hamza, was playing inside a parked auto-rickshaw when the attack occurred on July 17. A video capturing the incident shows the terrified boy cornered in the rickshaw as the Pit Bull bites him, while Khan laughs and fails to intervene, seemingly amused by the child's fright. He wasn't even holding on to the dog's leash. After a few seconds, the boy is heard screaming, and the dog leaps to bite his chin. He somehow manages to escape the vehicle even as the pitbull grabs his clothes. The dog's owner, instead of helping the child, keeps laughing as his pet runs after the boy, NDTV reported. The boy suffered injuries to his chin and was left shaken. 'The dog bit me. Then, I ran away. He even grabbed my clothes," said the victim, Hamza, on the attack on him. He also said that he pleaded with the dog's owner to help him, but he kept laughing. He further claimed that no one came forward to help him. 'They were just filming the attack," he said. Hamza said that he was 'very scared" after the attack. A case was filed by the police on Friday against the dog's owner, Hasan, based on the complaint by the father of the victim. As per the complaint, Hasan let go of his dog on the child who was playing inside a parked autorickshaw. The case has been registered under sections 291 (negligent abandonment of animals), 125 (causing simple hurt) and 125(A) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). The accused has also been issued a notice under section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 21:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
