3 charts show just how tough it is to get hired or promoted in tech right now

Too bad there isn't a way to debug the tech job market.
With Big Tech layoffs, the increase in computer science graduates, and quicker ways to learn through AI and vibe coding, there's a lot more tech talent, but not a lot of opportunities.
The labor market has been frozen for months, marked by low layoffs, low hiring, and few openings for job seekers and switchers.
It's looking like a better time to continue writing lines of code at your current role than to try to switch jobs or ask for a promotion.
Here are three charts that show how hard the tech job market is right now.

Tech job postings crashed after a post-pandemic boom
Indeed Hiring Lab economist Brendon Bernard said in a recent report that tech opportunities have been weak since mid-2023 after climbing to an early 2022 peak. The cooldown has been worse than the slowdown in overall US job postings.
The report said artificial intelligence"could be stalling a rebound" in tech openings on the job-search platform. However, it's not the only possible factor.
Bernard said that "the sector is experiencing an overhang from its earlier hiring boom, aggravated by less supportive economic conditions — including the end of the 'zero interest rate period' — with some resemblance to trends in the broader economy." The Fed began raising interest rates in March 2022 to fight rising inflation, making financing big speculative investments in new tech riskier.
Unemployment for young tech workers is above pre-pandemic rates
A Burning Glass Institute analysis found the unemployment rate for Gen Z and younger millennials who were in computer and math occupations over the last couple of years has increased from their pre-pandemic rates in 2018 and 2019.
The recent report said that knowledge economy sectors, which are primarily white-collar industries that usually absorb college graduates, have scaled back their hiring pace from before the pandemic, "suggesting that they have found a new lower-employment equilibrium." It's another sign of a quiet white-collar apocalypse afflicting Gen Z.
Younger workers are also already on the tougher side of the career divide that's cleaving Gen Z white-collar workers. The oldest Gen Zers, who are turning 28 this year, experienced a labor market in 2021 and 2022 that was eager to staff up on white-collar workers, and may have benefited from firms willing to pay a premium to attract new employees amid the Great Resignation.
Even if you have a tech job, it's hard to move up
As economists have said many times over the past year to Business Insider, it's a tougher time to be a job seeker than a job stayer. That can still be the case if you're looking to move up the ladder or switch roles within your current company.
Gusto, a payroll and benefits platform for small and midsize businesses, found that the promotion rate in technology has slowed down the most among major sectors since the Great Resignation. Gusto economist Aaron Terrazas said a normalization from "aggressive talent retention strategies" that companies tried in 2021 and 2022 could be a factor.
"We'll only know with time whether or not this is the new normal," Terrazas said about the slowdown in promotions across industries. "Right now, there are clearly a lot of structural forces, high interest rates, economic uncertainty, that would make it seem at least for the moment cyclical."

Although many millennials and Generation Z workers use artificial intelligence tools at work, about half are hesitant to admit how much of their work is created by AI, according to an Aug. 5 report from Cox Business. Workers said they use AI agents to enhance their workplace productivity by summarizing documents or meeting notes, brainstorming ideas or creative content, analyzing data, creating reports and coding or debugging. 'Our survey highlights valuable insights into how organizations can better align with the expectations of their younger employees,' Jeff Breaux, executive vice president and chief commercial officer for Cox Communications, said in a news release. 'This presents a tremendous opportunity for companies and their IT teams to enhance their strategies around tech investment, rollouts, training and policies; ensuring they meet the evolving needs of a workforce that is rapidly becoming the majority,' Breaux said. In a survey of more than 1,000 Gen Z and millennial workers in the U.S., 47% said they feared that AI could replace their jobs — a top reason they don't want to disclose their AI use. In addition, 30% said they're unfamiliar with their company's AI policy or their company doesn't have a defined policy. More than 60% reported using personal apps or software at work rather than their workplace's tools, creating a growing 'shadow IT' issue that could lead to security risks, the report found. Nearly 70% of younger workers said they feel overwhelmed by the number of tech tools provided by their workplace. However, only 16% feel they have real influence over tech decisions at work. In the next three years, Gen Z and millennial workers predict AI tools will replace some job roles but create new opportunities, increase productivity and efficiency, enhance creativity and innovation and improve decision-making and strategic planning. Looking ahead to 2026, Gen Z workers said employers should focus on improving cybersecurity, and millennials said workplaces should focus on workflow optimization. In another survey, nearly half of Gen Z workers said their bosses don't appreciate the benefits of AI tools at work, according to a report from UKG. In addition, 90% said AI will save them time at work, and 70% said they've taught themselves most of the AI skills they use for their jobs. Half of hotel loyalty program members claim that hotel loyalty programs are no longer delivering the value they once promised, according to Accenture's latest Consumer Pulse survey. Despite the fact that the programs remain a valuable tool to increase customer retention, consumers now have higher expectations when it comes to perks, with the majority (89%) of hotel loyalty program member respondents saying they want to choose their own rewards. With 43% of hotel loyalty program members reporting to be active generative AI users, Accenture hypothesizes that the technology has the potential to transform loyalty programs by enabling hyper-personalization and dynamic engagement, ultimately leading to more experiential rewards. Loyalty preferences are changing Accenture's latest Consumer Pulse survey — part of the report 'Me, my brand, and AI: The new world of consumer engagement' — found that hotel loyalty schemes still matter, but their perceived value is waning, with 50% of members saying that the programs no longer offer the value they once did. The survey of 18,000 consumers in 14 countries explores how the adoption of artificial intelligence is reinventing the consumer-brand relationship across industries, including hospitality. According to the report, younger generations (Gen Z and millennials) are 19% more likely than older generations (Gen X and baby boomers) to participate in loyalty programs but are also quicker to shift allegiance when disappointed. These survey results echo similar findings from a Morning Consult report published last December, which found that travel loyalty programs must 'do more to make members feel like valued customers,' with less than half of program members (43%) saying their loyalty program makes them feel like a valued customer. Older (35%) and wealthier (32%) travelers, in particular, are most likely to believe that the value of their loyalty programs has decreased, according to the report. Despite this dissatisfaction, the programs are still attracting consumers. Nearly six in 10 (57%) of the participants in Accenture's survey said they belong to hotel loyalty programs, indicating that programs remain a valuable tool to increase customer retention, drive higher lifetime value and deliver stronger brand advocacy. In fact, more than nine in 10 (92%) of loyal hotel customers have recommended their favorite hotel brand or sub-brand to someone else, the report found. Overall, though, loyalty programs aren't offering the perks members are looking for. The majority (89%) of hotel loyalty program members in the survey said they want to choose their own rewards, while nine in 10 luxury travelers, in particular, said they would like to shape their own experiences. 'Hotel loyalty programs still have strong pull amongst guests, especially younger generations, however they risk losing some of their appeal by not evolving beyond transactional points for perks,' Emily Weiss, senior managing director and global travel lead at Accenture, said in a statement. 'While point-based loyalty programs still have their place, they need to compete with experience-led rewards that capitalize on guests' desires for immediate satisfaction and personalization.' Gen AI poses an opportunity According to Accenture, generative AI has the potential to transform these lagging loyalty programs by enabling hyper-personalization and dynamic engagement. According to the survey, hotel loyalty program members are 1.6 times as likely to use a personal AI assistant to autonomously solve their travel needs, from initial inspiration to a seamless return home. 'A growing number of brands are using AI to improve customer experience with loyalty programs. For instance, these brands are using the technology to segment customer data and use this insight to tailor offers to the individual needs of each guest to further enhance satisfaction, boost revenues and garner loyalty,' Weiss said. With generative AI, hotels can 'craft experience-led rewards that feel more personal and meaningful' than points-based rewards, Weiss said. 'This can help hotels create memorable experiences, streamline operations, and strengthen guest relationships, ultimately helping to boost loyalty and repeat business.' During a recent fireside chat hosted by Hotel Dive, Nandika Suri, vice president of loyalty, co-brand credit card and partnerships at Choice Hotels International, also emphasized the importance of offering more experiential rewards. 'Loyalty is about creating brand love and deepening that emotional connection, and experiences are often the driver of why consumers are actually traveling,' she said. Gen-Z is seizing control of the narrative when it comes to finances. Seventy-two percent of Gen-Z have moved toward paying down debt or increasing their savings in the last year, according to Bank of America's 2025 Better Money Habits® financial education study. Bank of America surveyed 1,069 general population adults ages 18 or older and 915 general population Gen-Z adults (which span the age range of 18-28), with the survey conducted in English and Spanish. Inflationary costs have impacted nearly all day-to-day expenses—it isn't just the price of eggs on the upswing. The cost of food went up by 3% between June 2024 and June 2025, with grocery prices going up 2.4%, while the cost of dining out went up by 3.8%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In response, Gen-Z has remained principled in their determination to steer their financial future, with 41% of the age group cutting back on dining out, and 23% shopping at more affordable grocery stores, according to the BofA study. The emphasis on reducing expenses points to a focus on achieving financial stability. While 53% of participants reported that they don't make enough income to live the life they desire, 42% believe that saving for retirement is a symbol toward financial independence. However, only a quarter (25%) of participants were able to actively contribute to a retirement account in the last year, reflecting the generation's lack of disposable income. When stressed about finances, the survey found that 90% of Gen-Z are likely to monitor and take action, including checking their bank account balance (69%), making a budget (64%), getting ahead on paying bills (46%) or other proactive steps. Gen-Z is on track to become the most financially literate generation. A 2023 study by global investment management company Vanguard found that the age group is participating in their 401(k) plans at a much higher rate than similarly aged employees over a decade ago. The report found that in 2006, just 30% of employees ages 18 to 24 participated in their plans, but Gen-Z's participation rate rose to 62% in 2021, a 32% increase that accounted for the highest rise across any age group. A Goldman Sachs survey from the same year explains the aggressive saving: Gen-Z is ambitious when it comes to early retirement, with 44% of Gen-Z respondents saying they plan to retire earlier than age 60. Only 14% said they planned to retire between ages 65-69. The internet is likely at least one of the reasons why financial literacy has flourished among members of Gen-Z, democratizing the process. A 2023 Pew Research Center report found that adults ages 18 to 49 are more likely than those over 50 years old to have learned about personal finances from the internet (50% versus 19%). Still, Gen-Z finds themselves continuing to struggle to save consistently. The BofA study found the majority of Gen-Z, or 55%, don't have enough emergency savings to cover three months of expenses. The idiom 'The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now,' encapsulates the importance of time, especially when it comes to savings. Roth IRA accounts depend on compound interest, rewarding those who start saving early and often. For Gen-Z, opening and contributing to a Roth IRA account could be a big step in the right direction toward securing their financial future. A critical factor to keep in mind is that Roth IRA earnings on growth and qualified withdrawals are tax-free, maximizing the impact of compound interest, until you take the money out at age 59 ½. The earlier you start investing in a Roth IRA, the more you stand to earn over time, as even modest contributions can grow exponentially over decades. Money in a Roth IRA can be accessed before age 59 ½, but there can be penalties depending on the reason for the withdrawal. Let's say you start contributing around $500 per month and max out your yearly contributions into a Roth IRA at the age of 25. Over the next 30 years, you will have contributed $180,000 total—but if you get a 6% annual return on your contributions, your balance could be worth more than $500,000 in 30 years, or by age 55. While investing is always a risk with the market in constant flux, the S&P 500 has had an average annual return of 10.33% (6.47% when adjusted for inflation) since 1957. When choosing a Roth IRA account, look out for services that offer robo-advisors (algorithm-driven investing services), as well as fractional share trading , or portions of stock. It's also important to note any fees that the service charges. Keep in mind that IRAs have contribution limits, and in 2025, those are: For those under age 50: $7,000 Over 50 (Catch-Up Contribution): $8,000 ($7,000 plus $1,000 catch-up) Services like Fidelity are great for beginner investors to open accounts with no minimums, and it charges zero service fees for accounts under $25,000. For accounts with balances of $25,000 and over, the platform charges a low fee of 0.35%, which entitles users to unlimited 1-on-1 coaching calls.
