Railways' announcement of operating 12k spl trains during festive season draws criticism

Time of India11 hours ago
Patna: The railways' announcement on Wednesday about operating 12,000 special trains to handle the surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals has drawn criticism from the passengers' association in Bihar.
Bihar Daily Passengers' Association (BDPA) has expressed doubts about the feasibility of running such a large number of additional trains, citing the limitations of the existing railway infrastructure in the state.
Shoaib Quraishi, general secretary of BDPA, questioned how the railways—already operating around 13,198 passenger trains daily across the country, including 4,111 mail/express, 3,313 passenger, and 5,774 suburban trains—plans to accommodate 12,000 more trains during a short festive window.
"This announcement appears unrealistic, especially in Bihar, where railway infrastructure is already under strain due to limited platforms, tracks, and scheduling capacity," he said.
In response, the railways on Thursday clarified that the figure of 12,000 referred to trips of special trains and not additional special trains. These trips will be spread out over the festive season to accommodate the increased demand from passengers heading to and from Bihar and other parts of the country, railway sources said.

ECR's chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra said, "The railways is planning to operate 12,000 trips of special trains which means that fewer trains will make multiple rounds on different routes during the festival period. This is a standard practice during high demand season," he said.
According to sources, the railways, which serves over 2.4 crore passengers daily across more than 7,000 stations nationwide, often increases its capacity during major festivals. However, a meticulous planning is essential to ensure smooth traffic operations especially in high demand regions like Bihar during Diwali and Chhath, sources added.

Cabinet names GNB flyover after King Prithu to mark his resilience

1 2 Guwahati: State cabinet on Thursday named the over 5-km-long GNB flyover, which is being constructed to connect Ambari with Noonmati, as Maharaj (King) Prithu Flyover, after the ruler of Kamarupa in the early 13th century. The king is known for his military resistance against the Muslim invasions. Addressing a press conference, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said state cabinet approved naming the four-lane flyover (elevated corridor) on GNB Road as the 'Maharaj Prithu Flyover' in honour of the historic figure Maharaj Prithu. This is intended to have an inspirational and motivational effect on the present and future generations of the indigenous population of Assam. The king ruled Kamarupa in the early 13th century between 1195 and 1228. He is known for his military resistance against the Muslim invasions, notably against Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1206 and Ghiyas ud din Iwaj Shah in 1226. Prithu's reign is seen as a period of resistance against external threats and a consolidation of power in Kamarupa. In 1226, Prithu successfully resisted another invasion by Ghiyasuddin Iwaj Shah, who aimed to conquer Kamarupa, and in 1228, he was ultimately defeated and killed in battle against Nasiruddin Mahmud. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Officials said the project has faced some delays because workers get limited working hours due to the road being in use. Prior to this flyover, two more flyovers – one at Dispur Supermarket and the other at Rukminigaon – were named after King Bhagadatta, who was a ruler of the Pragjyotisha kingdom and a prominent figure in the Mahabharata epic. Bhagadatta was known for his prowess in elephant warfare, even in his old age. He fought on the side of the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war, despite being a friend of Indra. On the other hand, the bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati at Bharalumukh on the south bank and North Guwahati on the north bank of the river was recently named "Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu". It has been named in honour of the 7th-century Kamarupa King Kumar Bhaskar Varma. Varma was the last ruler of the Varman dynasty. Elevator logjam worry for flyerstaking metro ride to Kol airport

Kolkata: Passengers who take the metro to the airport to then board a flight will have to queue up for elevator before exit gate No. 1A at the arrival level to move to the departure level before entering the terminal. The elevator is situated around 40 m from the point where commuters exit the Jai Hind airport metro station. There will be no such issue for flyers exiting the airport to board the metro. While the queue before the arrival level elevator will be manageable if the flyer count that arrives by metro is few, officials admit concern about a logjam if a large number of passengers flying out of airport start using metro. The elevator has a capacity of 17 people and a maximum weight limit of 1,564 kg. An official said there are plans to create a separate entrance for flyers arriving by metro to travel to departure level after entering terminal through a new gate at the start of the terminal. A new express security check portal with baggage X-ray machines is also proposed. Putting this infrastructure in place will be time-consuming and require regulatory clearances. Airport officials are also looking at an alternative: allowing metro passengers to use two escalators and an elevator that exist in arrival lobby. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo An entrance has to be created between exit gates 3C and 4A to access them, which will take passengers up to departure lobby near gate 3C. DigiYatra gates may be installed later. An airport official said creating a two-level escalator with a landing in between outside the northern end of terminal building and close to entrance and exit to the tunnel leading to airport station would have been more convenient. A Metro official said, "Earlier there was a proposal to install an escalator for airport's departure access. It was later shelved."
