Iran detains Franco-German cycling tourist Lennart Monterlos
In an interview with French newspaper Le Monde, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the young man had been "detained for committing an offence," without disclosing further details.
He added that the country's French embassy had been officially notified of the detention of the French citizen, who is from the eastern French city of Besançon.
Pressed on the issue, the French Foreign Ministry stated that it was in contact with Iranian authorities regarding its citizen's condition, as well as with his family.
Since 16 June, the young man's family and friends have been without updates from him, after the 18-year-old set off from the town of Varzaneh in central Iran to travel to the desert located east of Isfahan.
Until then, Monterlos had been documenting his trip on social media, sharing his last Instagram post on 15 June.
"Day 152 of the France-Japan cycling adventure. Today, I'm in Iran and I'm leaving comfort for a crazy adventure in the desert and the heat to discover the sand dunes near Varzaneh," he told his followers.
In May, Monterlos declared that he planned to cross Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, telling his followers, "At 18 years old, I am going to cross the world's most dangerous countries (...) am I brave or oblivious?"
France urges citizens to respect travel advisory
Responding to news of Monterlos' detention, French Prime Minister François Bayrou urged countries "not to persecute innocent people who are sometimes unaware of the risks they face", in an interview with French broadcaster LCI on Thursday evening.
Despite this, Bayrou urged young travellers to respect travel instructions, which he said the young cyclist had "made a mockery of".
In a now-deleted social media video, while praising Iran's beauty and local hospitality, Monterlos took a jibe at Western media for supposedly fear-mongering about the dangers of travelling to Iran.
The French prime minister added that French authorities would refrain from further commenting on the case, in a bid not to "jeopardise the outcome of the situation".
Two other French nationals, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, were charged with "spying for Israel" in early July, after having been detained by Iran for more than three years. French diplomatic sources responded by branding the charges as "totally unfounded".
Human rights groups accuse Tehran of carrying out a policy of hostage diplomacy, using Europeans and dual nationals as "bargaining chips" to facilitate its negotiations with the West.
According to estimates from NGO Hostage Aid Worldwide, around 15 Europeans and dual nationals from Sweden, France, Switzerland, Cyprus, Germany and the UK are imprisoned in Iran.

Canada and Malta both announced on Wednesday that they plan to formally recognise the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September, joining France and the United Kingdom, who announced earlier they would do so. "Canada will increase its efforts in supporting strong democratic governance in Palestine," Carney concluded. Malta has long supported Palestinian sovereignty and the self-determination for its citizens. Christopher Cutajar, the permanent secretary at Malta's Foreign Ministry, made the announcement earlier at a United Nations conference on a two-state solution. "As responsible actors, we have a duty to work to translate the concept of a two-state solution from theory into practice," Cutajar said. It comes a day after Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced the United Kingdom would formally recognise the state of Palestine before the annual gathering of world leaders at the 193-member General Assembly in September. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his country's decision to formalise the move in September a week earlier, which would make France the first G7 country and the first permanent member of the UN Security Council to recognise Palestine. 147 member states of the United Nations, including ten European Union member states already recognise the state of Palestine. The act of recognition involves acknowledging the sovereignty and independence of Palestine within its pre-1967 Middle East war borders. This includes the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. Israel opposed a two-state solution and boycott the UN conference held in New York City, alongside its closest ally, the United States.

Mercedes sees profits slump by more than half amid US tariff turmoil
Mercedes-Benz said in an earnings update on Wednesday that its net profit had plummeted from €6.1 billion to €2.7 billion in the first half of 2025, a 56% year-on-year drop. It added that, in the second quarter alone, net profit dropped by an even greater 69%, while revenue was down 10% year-on-year. EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) and earnings per share have both fallen by a staggering 68%. While profits were dented by one-off costs linked to the firm's "Next Level Performance" cost-cutting plan, Mercedes is also contending with higher tariffs imposed by the US administration. Amid trade uncertainty sparked by President Donald Trump, the German carmaking powerhouse predicted that US tariffs would knock €360 million off its bottom line, with the company predicting 2025 sales well below last year's total. Another problem for Mercedes is slumping quarterly sales in China — normally Mercedes' biggest market. This total fell by nearly 20 % year-on-year as domestic electric car brands got cheaper and more popular. US imposes sanctions on shipping empire tied to Iranian leaders
The Treasury Department said the sanctions were being imposed on companies and vessels operated by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of Ali Shamkhani, who has been subject to US sanctions since 2020. It said Hossein operates a fleet of more than 50 tankers and container ships that transport Iranian and Russian oil and petroleum products, generating tens of billions of dollars in profit. "The Shamkhani family's shipping empire highlights how the Iranian regime elites leverage their positions to accrue massive wealth and fund the regime's dangerous behavior," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. The Treasury Department said more than 115 individuals, corporate entities and vessels were being sanctioned, including companies based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. "The over 115 sanctions issued today are the largest to-date since the Trump Administration implemented our campaign of maximum pressure on Iran," Bessent said. The Treasury Department said Hossein's network "comprises a vast fleet of vessels, ship management firms, and front companies... that launder billions in profits from global sales of Iranian and Russian crude oil and other petroleum products, most often to buyers in China." The State Department said separately that it was imposing sanctions on 20 entities, including companies in India, Indonesia, Turkey and the UAE, for their involvement in the trade of Iranian petroleum, and 10 vessels. The sanctions are being imposed more than a month after the United States attacked Iran's nuclear program, hitting a uranium enrichment facility at Fordo, south of Tehran, as well as nuclear sites in Isfahan and Natanz. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said the sanctions are intended to "disrupt the Iranian regime's ability to fund its destabilizing activities, including its nuclear program, support for terrorist groups, and oppression of its own people." "As President (Donald) Trump has said, any country or person who chooses to purchase Iranian oil or petrochemicals exposes themselves to the risk of US sanctions and will not be allowed to conduct business with the United States," Bruce said. She said the United States will continue to put "maximum pressure" on Tehran until it "accepts a deal that advances regional peace and stability and in which Iran forgoes all aspirations of a nuclear weapon."
