PBKS vs MI: Fans question BCCI after rain delays start of Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad

India Today3 days ago

The start of the Indian Premier League's Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings was delayed on Sunday evening due to rain in Ahmedabad, just moments after the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Punjab Kings had won the toss and elected to bowl first, buoyed by the return of Yuzvendra Chahal to their bowling line-up.Despite early fears about the weather, forecasts had indicated dry and favourable conditions for the evening. However, those hopes were quickly dashed when the match suffered three interruptions even before a single ball was bowled. Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, who had confidently chosen to field, was seen leading his side out amid the stadium's pyrotechnics, only to turn around moments later as a heavy downpour set in unexpectedly.advertisementPBKS vs MI Qualifier 2 IPL 2025: Updates
Television visuals captured the chaos: Mumbai's Tilak Varma was spotted doing shadow practice near the dugout when groundsmen rushed in with covers following a sudden drizzle. Although the initial spell was brief and the covers were removed shortly thereafter, a more intense downpour followed - forcing players and officials back indoors. The delay raised anxiety in both camps, particularly for Mumbai Indians, whose owners Akash and Nita Ambani were seen watching the weather nervously. With no reserve day in place for the fixture, a washout would result in Mumbai's elimination. It will be really unfortunate if rain doesn't stop tonight, Mumbai Indians might get knocked out without playing.Politics ruined our IPL 2025, they have 0 reasons to justify this ahmedabad shift #MIvsPBKS #Qualifier2 pic.twitter.com/GdjXXLtHHX— Mumbai Indians FC (@MIPaltanFamily) June 1, 2025BCCI organized the playoffs here due to potential rain in Kolkata, but now it's raining in Ahmedabad while Kolkata's weather is fine. pic.twitter.com/nf8WXk0FWF— Ayush. The board cited the onset of the southwest monsoon and the risk of heavy rain between 29 May and 3 June as the reasons for relocating the final leg of the tournament. But fans pointed out that Ahmedabad, too, had been experiencing intermittent showers in recent days. What would happen if PBKS vs MI game was washed out? With no reserve day assigned for the Qualifier 2 tie, a washout in Ahmedabad would send Punjab Kings into the final as they finished higher up in the points table at the end of the league stage. The Shreyas Iyer-led side ended up as the table-toppers, while Mumbai finished fourth."If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match," clarify the IPL's Playing Conditions notice for the 2025 edition of the tournament.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! At long last: on the IPL, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) played the Indian Premier League's (IPL) inaugural game on April 18, 2008. It was a night that, however, belonged to rival Kolkata Knight Riders with Brendon McCullum's unbeaten 158 putting the match well beyond the host in its backyard at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. In the subsequent editions, the franchise with a fiercely loyal fan base, promised much, delivered little and had three runner-up finishes to show. Finally, the ghosts of the past were laid to rest when Rajat Patidar's men claimed the title with a six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the summit clash at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday night. RCB's triumph in the IPL's 18th edition was also a tribute to Virat Kohli's longevity. He has been with the squad since its first game in 2008. In a unit that featured stars such as Rahul Dravid, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Ross Taylor in the past, Kohli has been the forever spine. The young lad has grown into a patriarch, and he has achieved enough and more with the Indian team, both as player and captain, but a missing IPL trophy, always rankled him. Finally that aberration has been corrected and there was no mistaking the relief and joy that coursed through him on a surreal June night. Patidar's assurance, Kohli's experience, spinner Krunal Pandya's choking spells, and Josh Hazlewood's sharp pace, all combined well while many others dished out cameos to keep RCB in the hunt through the latest IPL. Even if the cup proved elusive, Punjab Kings did remarkably well, especially its captain Shreyas Iyer; he will have a larger role with the Indian ODI team whenever Rohit Sharma and Kohli bid adieu to that format. Among the rest, Mumbai Indians, after a lukewarm start, surged back and found a berth in the play-offs, one that also featured Gujarat Titans. If the IPL was all about RCB's redemption song and Punjab Kings' chutzpah, equally, it mirrored the decline of a pedigreed outfit, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which finished last. An ageing M.S. Dhoni could not stem the rot and former champion CSK will have to rebuild afresh in the coming editions. Having commenced on March 22, the IPL stretched interminably and a break caused by the Pahalgam terror attack and the resultant Operation Sindoor, forced a change in schedule. The IPL also highlighted talented players such as young Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan. As a sporting brand, the league is formidable but, as Kohli said, Tests are five levels above in quality and, hopefully, modern players will respect this reality.

JioHotstar, the official streaming partner of the IPL, has been displaying cumulative views for a live match instead of peak concurrent viewers, which was the norm must be noted that unlike peak concurrent users-which indicate the number of unique viewers watching a match at a specific moment-cumulative views reflect duplicated reach, as they count multiple sessions by the same the final match, the tournament attracted an audience of 450 million each on both TV and digital platforms, according to the official broadcaster JioStar-formed after the merger of Star India and Viacom18. The broadcaster was eyeing a cumulative reach of one billion viewers across TV and digital from the full the first time, the season marked a key shift both as TV and digital rights were consolidated under one broadcaster after two years of rivalry between Star and a recent interaction with ET, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the tournament's viewership was on course to achieve record numbers despite the blip after the week-long suspension. He also noted that the broadcaster was on course to reach 500 million broadcast audiences. "We are attracting new audiences through regional commentary. There has been a growth in female and kids' viewership for the IPL. We are also finding traction in overseas markets," Dhumal believe that RCB's victory marks a refreshing shift in the league's competitive landscape, breaking the long-standing dominance of Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who have collectively won 13 of the previous 18 editions."A notable development this IPL season was the qualification of two long-standing teams, RCB and PBKS, for the final - with RCB securing their first-ever title. However, the momentum of the tournament was somewhat affected by the week-long suspension due to geopolitical tensions, which led to a dip in viewership and a noticeable decline in advertiser presence during the final stages," said Ajimon Francis, MD, Brand Finance BCCI suspended the tournament on May 9 for a week due to the India-Pakistan military conflict. The remainder of the tournament, comprising 17 matches, resumed on May 17 and concluded with the final on June a billion dollars in ad revenue was generated across TV, digital, on-ground, and franchise sponsorships, underscoring its vast business N, managing partner at D and P Advisory, said that despite the temporary suspension, the IPL remains India's leading media property, with robust viewership across both television and digital added that this season contributed to the strengthening of several team brands, driven by improved on-field performance and team cohesion."RCB is likely to see a moderate increase in brand value, supported by prize money and consistent presence among the top franchises. Punjab Kings, having historically remained lower on the brand value charts, may experience a significant uplift following their strong performance. In contrast, established teams like CSK and KKR could see a slight decline in brand value due to early exits and underwhelming campaigns," he also highlighted the rise of uncapped Indian players like Sai Sudharsan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, which helped reduce franchise dependence on marquee international stars."This shift bodes well for the league's future, as emerging local talent resonates more with younger audiences-an important demographic for long-term growth," he notable trend was the growing preference for Indian captains, even those not currently part of the national team. "Franchises are recognising that local leaders often connect better with regional fans and sponsors than high-profile overseas players," Santosh said.

Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday evening. Massive crowds had gathered to welcome the RCB players, who were to be felicitated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah after their historic win in the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings. Following their victory on Tuesday night, jubilant fans had taken to the streets across Bengaluru to celebrate the team's maiden IPL title in 18 years. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had organised a felicitation ceremony inside the stadium. However, the unmanageable crowd, many without valid entry passes, led to chaos.
