Important cases heard by Supreme Court on July 25

‘Repeatedly insults OBC': BJP mocks Congress after Udit Raj calls Rahul Gandhi ‘second Ambedkar'
In a sharp criticism of the Congress party, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Saturday accused the grand old party of repeatedly insulting the other backward classes (OBC) community, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who belongs to the same community. 'The most corrupt party held a conference on the OBC society yesterday. Rahul Gandhi himself has always insulted the OBC community and the Prime Minister, who comes from the OBC community. There are many serious charges against him, including corruption, and he is out on bail,' news agency ANI quoted Bhatia as saying. He also questioned the Congress leader's praise for leaders like Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, both of whom he said are facing corruption allegations. "Rahul Gandhi said that your ideals are sitting here. According to Rahul Gandhi, that ideal is Siddaramaiah, who is accused of the Muda scam. Bhupesh Baghel and his son are accused of many scams... The government has resolved to make the country corruption-free, but Rahul Gandhi says that those who are corrupt have the qualities to become leaders," Bhatia added. Congress leader Udit Raj on Saturday said that Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the 'second Ambedkar' for the OBCs if they listen to what he said during the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan'. Raj compared Rahul to Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the OBCs must support the statements made by the Leader of Opposition. "Caste census in Telangana is an X-ray of society. Rahul Gandhi aims to replicate it nationwide. His views are visionary. If Dalits and backward classes come forward, our economy will boost. The inequality that prevails in society will be reduced. If OBC understands what Rahul Gandhi said, he will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj told ANI. "OBCs will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said in the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj posted on X. Senior BJP leader and MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday also hit out at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of abandoning political decorum and showing frustration at PM Modi's rise from humble beginnings to global leadership, as reported by ANI. Prasad said, "Their leader, Rahul Gandhi, has forgotten decency. There is a frustration that a leader born in a poor, backwards family has become the leader of the world today." The BJP leader further claimed that the Congress party is 'frustrated' by the fact that PM Modi 'has outnumbered the days of Indira Gandhi as PM', adding that Congress is uncomfortable with India's increasing global influence. Congress had on Friday organised the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan', which was inaugurated by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The concluding address of the event was delivered by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, the ANI report said. During this address, the Congress leader admitted that not conducting a caste census during the UPA government was a mistake and said he is now determined to correct it. Rahul said he had failed to understand the issues of the OBC community earlier, unlike those of Dalits, tribals, and women, where he claimed the Congress had done commendable work. 'I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, MNREGA, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle – all these things I did well. As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work,' he said.

Want Bengal govt to respond to Centres queries on Aparajita Bill: Guv
Kolkata, Jul 26 (PTI) A day after he sent the Aparajita Bill back to the West Bengal government, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday said that he wanted the state administration to respond to the Centre's objections to the legislation. He also said the Bill was larger in its context and content, and thus required an examination from the President. The West Bengal assembly had unanimously passed the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill nearly a month after the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. 'The Aparajita Bill was larger in its context and content. Therefore, I thought that it was something that required the examination of the President of India. Now, the Government of India (GoI) has raised certain queries, which I have asked the state government to answer. I want the state government to be fully involved in this," he said. Bose sent the Aparajita Bill back to the state government for consideration of the serious objections raised by the Centre over the proposed changes to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that the legislation seeks, a Raj Bhavan source had said on Friday. According to the source, the Centre, in its observation, found that the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, passed in the assembly in September 2024, seeks changes in punishment for rape under multiple sections of the BNS that are 'excessively harsh and disproportionate", the source had said. The Bill proposes enhancement of punishment for rape from the existing minimum of 10 years under the BNS to life imprisonment for the remainder of one's life or death. 'There are three options before a governor. First is to give ascent to the Bill. Many Bills I had given ascent because these were very good in every respect, Constitutional within the law of the land. 'The second option is that the Bill can be sent back to the Assembly for reconsideration with certain suggestions, or without suggestions. Once passed by the Assembly, the Bill comes back to the Governor, and he has to give assent to the Bill. The third option is to refer it to the President of India," Bose told reporters at the Raj Bhavan here. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had 'flagged multiple provisions in the Bill as problematic", the source had said. 'After taking note of the MHA observation, the Governor has referred those for appropriate consideration to the state government," the source added. Mahadevappa to discuss SC and ST employees benefits with min concerned
Mysuru: State social welfare and district minister HC Mahadevappa said that he would make his best efforts to get promotions and other benefits for SC and ST employees working in the department of rural development and panchayat raj institutions after discussing with the minister concerned. He was speaking after inaugurating the state-level convention of the RDPR department SC and ST employees and the newly formed RDPR department SC and ST Employees Association at the Senate Hall in Manasagangothri. "The state govt has constituted a committee to oversee the issues related to promotions for govt employees. Even the vigilance committee in the department of social welfare will take care of issues related to promotions," he said. The minister also highlighted the role of employees of the RDPR department in the development of villages, where 65% of the population lives in harmony. H e also recalled the contributions of BR Ambedkar, programmes in the Constitution for the empowerment of SC/STs, and other vulnerable sections in society. Ambedkar played a key role in granting voting rights to scheduled castes, tribes, and women in the country. Minister Mahadevappa also hailed the contributions of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in bringing the 74th amendment to the Constitution for the introduction of a three-tier system of local governance. This amendment also provided 50% reservation for women to be represented in panchayat bodies. Many SC and ST panchayat members, including women, were elected and enjoyed positions in decision-making bodies of the local governance system among 6,200 gram panchayats in the state, he said. Urilingapeddi Mutt Jnanaprakash Swami, MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLA AR Krishnamurthy, ZP CEO S Ukeshkumar, former Mayor Purushottam, and others were present.
