Penang flash flood trigger Bomba response as foothill rains flood four homes in Balik Pulau
Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations John Sagun Francis said two fire engines with six personnel from the Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving an emergency call at 3.53 pm.
He said the heavy rain caused the road to be flooded to a depth of about 0.3 metres and overflowed into nearby homes.
'The flash flood was caused by heavy rain, compounded by its location at the foothill, which led to drains overflowing onto the road and subsequently entering four houses,' he said in a statement yesterday.
John said monitoring at the site showed that the situation was under control, with water levels gradually receding and that the operation ended at 6.33 pm.
Apart from Balik Pulau, many parts of Penang were also affected by heavy rain, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issuing a thunderstorm, heavy rain, and strong wind warning today. — Bernama

BEIJING, Aug 17 — At least eight people have died in a flash flood in northern China, state media reported today, with four others still missing, as the East Asian monsoon continues to unleash atmospheric chaos across the world's second-largest economy. The deluge in Inner Mongolia follows a deadly downpour in Beijing - just under 1,000 kilometres away - late last month which killed at least 44 people and forced the evacuation of more than 70,000 residents. Japan urges evacuations after rains leave several missing

(Kyodo News/AP pic) TOKYO : Japanese authorities today urged residents to evacuate their homes after heavy rains unleashed floods and landslides in the country's southwest, leaving several people missing. Television footage from various communities in Kumamoto prefecture showed houses, stores and vehicles submerged in about 1m of water. Surging rivers swept away vehicles and damaged roads. More than 40cm of rain fell over 12 hours in Kumamoto prefecture's hardest-hit Tamana city, a record for the area according to Japan's meteorological agency (JMA). By this morning, evacuation advisories and warnings were issued to more than three million residents in the southwestern regions, the fire and disaster management agency said. While the most severe warnings were lifted in all areas, lower-level alerts including some evacuation advisories remained in the evening. Although heavy rain in Kumamoto has slowed, active rain fronts could cover other parts of Japan at any time, Shuichi Tachihara, chief of forecasting at JMA, told a televised press conference. 'Heavy rainfall to date has loosened the ground in some areas and caused water levels to rise in some rivers,' he said. 'The risk of disasters may increase again in the future, even with less rainfall. Please continue to be extremely vigilant for landslides, and be aware of rising river levels and flooding.' Local media said this afternoon that emergency workers found one person unresponsive in Kosa town in Kumamoto, near a place where a man had gone missing earlier in the day. He disappeared in a landslide which hit when he was standing outside his home, while his wife and two children were safely inside their car, Kumamoto's RKK television station said. The town's officials could not immediately confirm the report. In Misato town, also in Kumamoto, an elderly man was rescued after being trapped inside his house when it was struck by a landslide. 'The rain was so heavy that I couldn't see what was in front of me for four to five hours,' Misato town official Kazuhiro Masunaga told AFP. Two people in Fukuoka city were swept away in a surging river yesterday and remained missing, national broadcaster NHK reported.

Air Selangor: Sungai Way burst pipe repairs to finish by 9pm tonight
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Work to repair a burst pipe in Sungai Way, near the cable bridge along the Federal Highway/Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) intersection, is expected to be completed by 9pm tonight. According to an Air Selangor spokesperson, as of 4pm today, 60 per cent of the repair work on the 600-millimeter asbestos cement pipe has been completed. 'The issue was caused by a burst in an old pipe. Repair work began at 9.45 pm last Saturday and is expected to be completed by 9pm tonight. 'The delay was due to the damaged pipeline being quite long, about 25 metres, and the presence of multiple utility pipelines at the site, which made excavation challenging,' the spokesperson said when contacted by Bernama. The burst pipe caused water supply disruptions in several areas, including SS 7, Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, PJU 1A Kelana Idaman, SS 3, Hyatt Saujana/Saujana Glenmarie, Jalan U1/13, Citta Mall, and Taman Perindustrian Hicom Glenmarie. Air Selangor has deployed nine water tankers to assist residents in the affected areas since 8 am yesterday. Alternative water supply via tankers will continue until the repair work is completed and normal water service is fully restored. — Bernama
