Italian Republic Day: Message from Salvatore Parano, Italian Trade Commissioner for Pakistan
It is with great pride that I extend my greetings to the readers of this special supplement, commemorating the Italian National Day set to be celebrated on June 2nd, 2025, in Islamabad and Karachi. As we navigate through the complexities of rising trade policy uncertainty and rapid surge of tariffs, the role of trade promotion becomes increasingly vital. International trade statistics show that over the last hundred years, the growth in commerce has outpaced the economic growth. Today, trade promotion is becoming increasingly important for the gdp growth and complex to manage.
The Italian Trade Commission (ITA) office in Islamabad has been fully operational in the last 18 months and, together with a dedicated desk in Karachi, has been meeting the needs and requirements of the business sector of our two economic systems. The Italian Trade Commission (ITA) is the national trade and investment promotion agency whose duty is to develop, facilitate and promote the international competitiveness of italian companies, with particular emphasis on the needs of small and medium sized businesses.
In Pakistan, the Italian Trade Commission has always worked under the auspices of the Embassy and the Consulate of Italy to enhance the existing trade relations between our two countries.
Pakistan's goods and services trade with Italy witnessed a robust surplus during fiscal year 2024. Trade surplus came in at €558.633 million in FY2024 against €666.110 million a year ago, showing moderate decline of 16,1%. The Overall italian exports to Pakistan stood at € 467.158 million during 2024 against imports of €1,025.991. On a year-on-year basis, exports to Italy decreased 6,2% while imports from Italy increased 9.04%.
We look forward to increased interaction between Italy and Pakistan in the years to come and for Italy to become major stakeholder in Pakistan's industrial growth and development, not only in terms of provider of technology for Pakistan manufacturing units but also in terms of quality standards of fast moving consumer goods in which Italy has a worldwide reputation and can represent a win-win best practise for Pakistani partners and new products.
Opportunities for the bilateral Trade:
Currently, our industrial system is increasingly focusing its attention on the Asian region, with a particular emphasis on Pakistan. Through our privileged position, we are able to identify and often anticipate the significant commercial and economic opportunities that Pakistan can offer during this transformative phase in the global economy. We aim to share these opportunities with Italian companies, fostering collaboration for mutual benefit.
The Italian institutions present in Pakistan have identified three large areas of opportunity to enhance collaboration, benefiting both economic systems:
• Product diversification and modernization for export led industries,
• Agricultural mechanization and resilience,
• Energy generation and efficiency,
Pakistani businesses and entrepreneurs are encouraged to connect with the Italian Trade Commission to explore the vast opportunities that await for them. Together, we can build an even more prosperous future for our economic resources.
BuonFestadellaRepubblica!
(Happy Republic Day!)

Rivals Meloni and Macron seek to mend fences
Italy's Giorgia Meloni and France's Emmanuel Macron met Tuesday in Rome, seeking to reconcile their differences as they confront common challenges, notably US tariffs and the Ukraine war. The far-right prime minister welcomed the centrist French president to her Palazzo Chigi office, the pair kissing lightly on the cheek and both smiling. A guard of honour played both national anthems before the two European rivals headed inside for talks and a dinner, with no plans to speak to the press. They are not natural political allies, but as the leaders of the EU's second- and third-largest economies, they are both grappling with the fall-out from the war in Ukraine, as well as US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs against the bloc. Meloni on Friday acknowledged "divergences" with Macron but denied she had any "personal problems" with him, and said she was "very happy" with the visit. An Italian government source said Rome and Paris hoped to "lay the foundations for a further strengthening of relations" between two nations "on the front line of the various fronts of international politics".

Asian stocks up, dollar soft as trade uncertainty mounts
SINGAPORE: Asian stocks inched higher on Wednesday and the dollar wobbled near six-week lows as traders braced for higher U.S. duties on steel and aluminium, the latest chapter in the trade war saga that has rattled the markets for much of the year. South Korea's stocks and its currency surged as liberal presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung's election victory raised hopes of swift economic stimulus, market reforms and easing policy uncertainty. The benchmark KOSP jumped more than 2% to its highest since August 2024. That left the MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan 0.6% higher. Japan's Nikkei rose 0.8%, while Taiwan stocks jumped 1.6% after artificial intelligence behemoth Nvidia boosted U.S. stocks overnight. Data on Wednesday showed U.S. job openings increased in April, but layoffs picked up, indicating a slowing labour market as tariffs impact the economic outlook. Investor attention has been on a possible call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping sometime this week as tensions between the world's top two economies simmer. Trump on Friday accused China of violating a Geneva agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Beijing said it would safeguard its interests and that the accusation was groundless. Chinese stocks were little changed in early trading with the blue chip index up 0.09%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.27%. 'Markets may be desensitized to trade headlines, but Trump-Xi talks remain in focus. A grand deal looks unlikely, yet any escalation could still spark a bout of risk aversion,' said Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo in Singapore. Also in focus has been the pace of trade negotiations and the lack of significant progress. Wednesday is the deadline for U.S. trading partners to submit their proposals for deals that might help them avoid Trump's hefty 'Liberation Day' tariffs from taking effect in five weeks. Trump signed an executive proclamation that puts into effect from 0401 GMT on Wednesday his surprise announcement last week that he was taking the tariffs on steel and aluminium imports that had been in place since March to 50% from 25%. 'We believe that the steel & aluminium tariffs are an exemplar of other strategic tariffs that are coming and likely to 'stick',' said Thierry Wizman, global FX & rates strategist at Macquarie. 'With that, there's still little impetus for a U.S. dollar rally to take hold.' Dollar weakness The on-again-off-again tariffs from Trump have led to investors fleeing U.S. assets looking for safe havens, including gold and other currencies, this year as they expect trade uncertainties to take a toll on the global economy. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said the global economy is on course to slow from 3.3% last year to 2.9% in 2025 and 2026, trimming its estimates from March, mainly on the fallout from the Trump administration's trade war. Stocks slip, dollar sags as Trump tariffs remain after latest courtroom twist The dollar on Wednesday was on the back foot, slipping 0.17% against the yen at 143.72 and 0.1% against the Swiss franc at 0.8227. The euro rose 0.15% to $1.1388. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. unit versus six other major currencies, was at 99.11, not far from the six-week low of 98.58 touched on Monday. The index is down 8.5% this year. In commodities, oil prices eased, weighed down by a loosening supply-demand balance following increasing OPEC+ output and lingering concerns over the global economic outlook due to tariff tensions. Brent crude futures dipped 0.06% to $65.59 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $63.35 per barrel, down 0.09%. Gold rose 0.5% to $3,369.59 per ounce, taking its gains for the year to an eye-popping 28% on safe-haven flows.
