India's short-term government bonds rose on Friday, buoyed by the central bank's monetary policy announcements, including a larger-than-expected 50 basis point rate cut, which were viewed as particularly supportive for the shorter end of the yield curve. In contrast, the more liquid long-term bonds remained largely muted. The yield on India's benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 6.2200% around 1:25 pm on Friday, up from 6.1960% at Thursday's close. The five-year 6.75% 2029 bond yield was at 5.8100%, after ending at 5.8514%. Bond yields were volatile after the RBI announcement. The RBI lowered its key repo rate to 5.50%, marking its third consecutive cut, as subdued inflation gave policymakers room to shift their focus toward boosting economic growth. The central bank has lowered rates by a total of 100 basis points in 2025 so far, beginning with a 25 basis point cut in February. Additionally, the Central Bank reduced the CRR by a cumulative 100 bps in four equal tranches, adding almost INR 2.5 Lakh crore to banking system liquidity.'Larger than expected move on the Repo Rate, offset by the hardening of the policy stance, may be seen as a front-loading of future policy action. CRR, on the other hand, is a surprise for the market,' noted Churchil Bhatt, Executive Vice President - Investment at Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company.RBI has also moved its full-year inflation forecast lower to 3.7% from 4.0% while affirming its confidence in a robust growth trajectory.'Overall, we expect moderate steepening of the Government Bond yield curve, with shorter-end yields and spread assets benefitting from the surprise liquidity bonanza,' Bhatt added. He believes that these policy actions will also accelerate monetary transmission, resulting in lower bank lending rates. Going forward, he expects to see a data-dependent approach to RBI, with most of the heavy lifting behind us.Bond yields and RBI interest rates have an inverse relationship, meaning when the RBI cuts interest rates (like the 50 basis point repo rate cut in this case), bond yields, particularly on shorter-duration government bonds, typically fall. This is because new bonds will offer lower returns, making existing higher-yielding bonds more attractive, thereby driving up their prices and pushing yields down. Short-term yields are more directly influenced by such rate cuts and tend to respond quickly. Also read: RBI's bazooka sends Sensex, Nifty soaring. What does it mean for stock market investors However, long-term yields, like the 10-year benchmark, are typically shaped by broader factors such as inflation expectations, fiscal outlook, and economic growth.(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. Stocks to buy under ₹100: Experts recommend three shares to buy after Trump-Zelensly meeting
Stocks to buy under ₹ 100: Following the positive outcome from the Trump-Putin meeting, GST reforms and optimistic hopes from the Trump-Zelensky meeting, the key benchmark indices of the Indian stock market staged a strong rally of around 1% each, driven by sharp gains in auto, consumption, metal, and realty stocks. Investor sentiment was buoyed by reports of a streamlined Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, expected to boost spending and fuel consumption. The Nifty opened strongly and climbed to an intraday high of 25,022 mid-session. However, some higher-level profit booking led the index to pare a portion of its gains, eventually closing at 24,882.50, up 251 points or 1.02%. Sector-wise, Nifty Auto led the charge with a stellar gain of 4.18%, followed by Nifty Realty, which rose 2.17%, and Nifty Metal, up 1.86%. FMCG and PSU Bank indices also traded positively, advancing 1.2% and 0.4%, respectively. On the downside, Nifty IT dipped 0.57%, while Energy, Pharma, and Media sectors remained essentially flat. Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 1.08% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 adding 1.38%. Pointing towards the key takeaways from the Trump-Zelensky meeting, Anuj Gupta, Director at Ya Wealth, said, 'If we look at the key takeaways from the most-awaited Trump-Zelensky meeting, the US President Donald Trump has said the US could back security guarantees for Ukraine. However, it is still not clear how to prevent further Russian aggression in the future. One thing that would keep Russia satisfied, Trump has ruled out allowing Ukraine to join NATO. He did, however, express support for security guarantees for Ukraine, which is expected to please Zelensky. So, in a broader perspective, we can say that the Russia-Ukraine peace talks have moved further. Zelensky and Putin are willing to end the war, which may trigger further buying in the global markets, including the indian stock market.' Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 index, Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said, "The Nifty 50 index, after a long consolidation near the 100-DEMA level, finally indicated a strong pullback with a bullish candle formation to close above 50-DEMA level of 24,815 zone with bias and sentiment improving, and as mentioned earlier, a decisive breach above the 25,100 level shall establish conviction, and thereafter, we can expect stability in the coming sessions. Active participation from the broader markets has eased out the pessimism to some extent, which can trigger further upward movement of the indices." On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Shiju Kuthupalakkal, Senior Manager of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, said, "The Bank Nifty index, taking support near the 100-DEMA level of the 54,978 zone, has given an INSIDE BAR breakout above the 55600 zone during the intraday session, and we can expect a further rise with an initial target of the 56,500-56,800 level expected in the coming sessions. With the bias maintained intact till now, the crucial zone of the 55,000 level needs to be sustained to anticipate further recovery on the index." Regarding stocks to buy today, market experts — Vaishali Parekh, Vice President of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher; Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet; and Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investment, recommended these three intraday stocks for today under ₹ 100: Ola Electric Mobility, JTL Industries, and Shriram Properties. 1] Ola Electric Mobility: Buy at ₹ 41, Target ₹ 45, Stop Loss ₹ 39. 2] JTL Industries: Buy at ₹ 68, Targets ₹ 71.50, ₹ 73.30, Stop Loss ₹ 65.70. 3] Shriram Properties: Buy at ₹ 89.50, Target ₹ 95, Stop Loss ₹ 85. Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky looked set for a peace summit after fast-moving talks Monday between Donald Trump and European leaders that focused on the key issue of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv. The hope of a breakthrough rose after Trump said he had spoken by phone with Russian counterpart Putin, whom he had met in Alaska last week, following a "very good" meeting with the Europeans and the Ukrainian president at the White House. It would be the first meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders since Moscow's brutal invasion nearly three and a half years ago, and comes as Trump tries to live up to his promise to end the war quickly. GST reforms pitch triggers rally on Dalal St
Mumbai: Stockmarkets rose sharply on Monday, with Sensex closing higher by 676 points and Nifty climbing one per cent on heavy buying in auto and consumer durables stocks, buoyed by plans for big bang reforms in the GST regime by Diwali. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 676.09 points or 0.84 per cent to settle at 81,273.75. During the day, it zoomed by 1,168.11 points or 1.44 per cent to 81,765.77. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 245.65 points or 1 per cent to end at 24,876.95. Intra-day, it surged 390.7 points or 1.58 per cent to 25,022. The global rating agency S&P's upgrade of India's sovereign credit rating, as well as US-Russia talks over the Ukraine war, also boosted market sentiment, analysts said. Among Sensex firms, Maruti zoomed the most by 8.94 per cent. 'The proposed rationalisation of GST is a sentiment booster for the domestic market. Additionally, the recent conclusion of the US and Russia summit, without any escalation in geopolitical tensions, has helped ease investor anxiety. The automobile sector outperformed, emerging as a key beneficiary of the anticipated tax reforms,' Vinod Nair, head (research), Geojit Investments Limited, said. The BSE smallcap gauge jumped 1.39 per cent while midcap index climbed 1 per cent. 'Markets staged a strong rally on Monday and ended with gains of over a per cent. The positive sentiment was driven by GST reform proposals, easing concerns over crude oil prices, and a sovereign rating upgrade, which together lifted investor confidence,' added Ajit Mishra, sr V-P (research), Religare Broking Ltd. The BSE auto index jumped 4.26 per cent to 56,233.33. Hyundai Motor India jumped 8.45 per cent, Ashok Leyland by 8.12 per cent, TVS Motor by 6.58 per cent and Hero MotoCorp by 5.9 per cent. Bajaj Finance rallied over five per cent, UltraTech Cement by 3.71 per cent, and Bajaj Finserv by 3.7 per cent. Mahindra & Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever and Trent were also among the gainers. However, ITC was the biggest loser, dropping by 1.26 per cent. Eternal, Tech Mahindra and Larsen & Toubro also declined. The Centre has proposed a 2-tier GST structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, besides a 40 per cent special rate on a select few items to the GoM on GST rate rationalisation. The proposal, which entails removing the current 12 per cent and 28 per cent tax slabs, will be discussed at the two-day meeting of the state ministerial panel on August 20 and 21 in the national capital, according to sources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the proposal to reform the GST law in his Independence Day speech on August 15 from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Among BSE sectoral indices, auto surged 4.26 per cent, consumer durables (3.08 per cent), consumer discretionary (2.74 per cent), realty (2.19 per cent), commodities (1.96 per cent), metal (1.95 per cent) and services (1.30 per cent).
