Spain: Two missing as heavy rains hit Catalonia – DW – 07/13/2025
Two people were missing after torrential rains and floods in Catalonia in northeastern Spain.
Firefighters said they were searching along the banks and mouth of the Foix river for two people who went missing near the town of Cubelles, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Barcelona.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for "great caution" and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in 10 northern and eastern regions that were on high alert on Saturday.
"We are closely monitoring the situation in several communities with warnings for heavy rains and storms," Sanchez wrote on X.
The prime minister said troops from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) had already been deployed to municipalities in Aragon.
The national weather service, Aemet, said 10 centimeters (four inches) had fallen near Barcelona in a matter of hours.
Catalonia and the neighboring region of Aragon were under a red "extreme risk" alert due to rains that could see up to 60 liters per square meter fall in one hour, according to Aemet.
As a precautionary measure, Renfe, Spain's rail company, briefly suspended services throughout Catalonia on Saturday.
In Barcelona, roads were blocked, while a hospital had to refuse patients after it flooded.
A plane that took off from the city for the United States was forced to turn back after sustaining damage to its nose in a hail storm.
In October 2024, heavy rains and devastating floods in the eastern region of Valencia killed 225 people in the worst meteorological disaster in Spain in decades.
That rain storm, like the one currently affecting the country, was caused by a weather phenomenon known in Spain as a "cold drop" or DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), in which a mass of cold air drops over the warmer waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Texas flood: Search efforts for dozens of missing continue – DW – 07/08/2025
Volunteers on horseback have been part of search and rescue efforts following the catastrophic floods in central Texas. As the death toll jumped to 100, there are 41 people still missing. Authorities in the United States say that more than 100 people have been killed following Friday's flash floods in central Texas, while search efforts for 41 people continue. At Camp Mystic, along the Guadalupe River 27 campers and counsellors have died and 10 children and one counsellor are still missing. Rescuers in inflatable motorboats have been searching for bodies near camp site where victims were swept away by floodwaters. Riders and horses from organizations like Texas Equusearch and Heal-Corp Search and Rescue have been part of those efforts, with horses being able to navigate some of the treacherous terrain. reported that local businesses and organizations have been gathering donations for the families of those affected. Meanwhile, a coastguard swimmer is being hailed in US media as a hero and has been credited with saving more than 165 people from the Texas floods. reported that Scott Ruskan had been on his first rescue mission and had been part of the early response efforts when water in the Guadalupe River surged by more than 20 feet. Ruskan told international boradcaster CNN that when he arrived at Camp Mystic, he realized he was the only first responder and was met with "about 200 kids, mostly all scared, terrified, cold, having probably the worst day of their life.' Ruskan helped lead children from Camp Mystic, in batches of 10 to 15, to rescue aircraft.

Camp Mystic says it is "grieving the loss" of 27 campers and counselors in the Texas floods. Scores more have been reported dead in other areas of the state, with more life-threatening surges predicted. The summer camp hit by flash floods in Texas said Monday that 27 campers and counselors had died, while state officials put the overall death toll from the disaster at more than 80. Officials have said the death toll is sure to rise, with the risk of life-threatening flooding still high in central Texas and more rain on the way. "Camp Mystic is grieving the loss of 27 campers and counselors following the catastrophic flooding on the Guadalupe River,' the camp said in a statement. "We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls." "We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders, and officials at every level." Swollen by predawn torrential downpours, the Guadalupe River turned into a deadly torrent in less than an hour, cutting through the heart of the town of Kerrville. Most of the deaths from Friday's devastating flash floods were concentrated along Kerrville's riverfront where 68 people were killed including 28 children, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said. Camp Mystic, a nearly century-old Christian girls' summer retreat on the banks of the Guadalupe, was among the worst-hit sites. Texas Governor Gregg Abbott said the heavy rain might "lead to potential flash flooding" in Kerrville and nearby towns, urging residents to steer clear of the swollen river and creeks.
