BBC Storyville Seeking New Head Following Role Closures & 20% Reduction In Films

Yahoo27-06-2025
The BBC's storied documentary strand Storyville is restructuring and seeking a new head.
A trio of roles have been closed including Lead Commissioning Editor Emma Hindley's post and a new Head of Storyville is being sought from today, while the number of films commissioned per year will drop by 20%, although annual budget remains the same. The new chief will be joined by an assistant commissioner and team assistant. Alongside Hindley's, the other two roles to close are the Commissioning Editor and Commissioning Co-ordinator.

Initial news of the restructure was announced in an internal email sent round several months back by then-BBC unscripted boss Kate Phillips, who has since taken on the Chief Content Officer role.
A job ad was then posted this afternoon seeking a Head of Storyville, who will be 'responsible for developing, directing and deploying the strategy for this genre in line with the BBC's broader digital first strategy, and will represent the BBC within international markets with documentary film makers.' The job pays up to £167,000 ($230,000) per year dependent on experience.
The new Storyville structure will sit under Fiona Campbell, the BBC's Controller of Youth Audience, BBC iPlayer & BBC Three. Films will be reduced by 20% per year 'due to the pressures of global financing,' according to Phillips' email, but the annual undisclosed budget remains the same. Moving into Campbell's team will 'enable Storyville to capitalise on synergies with the acquisitions team in how we build relationships with distributors and content partners,' added Phillips.
The BBC's documentary strand is hugely respected, winning awards aplenty and recently airing the likes of White Man Walking, The Wolves Always Come At Night and October 7 doc We Will Dance Again, the latter of which just won a News & Documentary Emmy.
Former Brook Lapping creative chief Hindley took over from Philippa Kowarsky in early 2023, having done the job temporarily for several months.
She has been involved with plenty of respected docs during her tenure but also courted controversy. In late 2023, she was reported to have embraced the director of a Storyville-backed film on stage at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam after he had made remarks deemed by some to be antisemitic. At the time she said she had hugged Mohammed Almughanni because he 'was visibly distressed,' adding: 'Hugging him wasn't a political statement or an endorsement of anybody's views, it was an instinctive human reaction. I'm sorry if my actions have upset anyone – my intentions were quite the opposite.'

Amazon MGM Studio's James Bond film names ‘Peaky Blinders' writer

The upcoming James Bond movie now has a writer attached to the project. Steven Knight, who has penned projects like Eastern Promises, Apple TV+'s See, Locke and Netflix's wildly popular Peaky Blinders series, was announced as the script writer on Thursday afternoon. He will join director Denis Villeneuve on the highly-anticipated project. David Heyman and Amy Pascal have signed on to produce the project, the first Bond movie in its new home at Amazon MGM Studios. Amazon acquired MGM in 20212, taking control of the extensive collection of 007 movies. It wasn't until February of 2025, however, that the studio was able to negotiate a deal for the rights to the creative control of the character. There has not been a new James Bond announced yet, but the search is apparently on. That hasn't stopped fans from coming up with their own theories on who could take over the mantle from Daniel Craig. Names like Idris Elba, Damson Idris, Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi and Harris Dickinson have all been in the online conversation. Craig became Bond in 2006's Casino Royale and went on to star in five total movies as 007. His final outing as the dapper spy was in 2021 with No Time To Die. Don't sleep on these amazing new Game Pass games this weekend (August 1-3)

Xbox has already released a lot of its plans for Gamescom this year, including the fact that Silksong will be playable on its upcoming handheld. Sadly, very few of us can make the trip to Germany just to play that and all the other games coming to Xbox Series X this year, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of new games for us to dive into this weekend. In fact, one of the most exciting games of the year was quietly added to Game Pass in early access, making it the perfect game to grab some friends and jump into. That is in addition to a deep sim title and a game that needs no introduction but you might not realize is back on the service. That's enough teasing from me, though, so let's talk about three Game Pass games you can't afford to sleep on this weekend. Grounded 2 (early access) The original Grounded was a slow starter but a wildly fun and inventive survival game. This sequel, which just hit early access, is already bigger and better than the original. Grounded 2 shrinks you and your friends down to bug-size in a park filled with more bugs to fight (and ride), resources to collect, and weapons to craft. There's even more lore and story to uncover here that builds on what was set up in the first game. I do have to note that this is early access, which means it isn't complete yet. You won't find an ending to the story, and there are still new features and mechanics on the way. Even with that caveat, I love exploring the world from a shrunken perspective with friends and no other game lets me do that. Recommended Videos Grounded 2 is available now in early access on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Farming Simulator 25 Simulator games have been on a roll lately, and the king of them has always been Farming Simulator. Xbox is giving us full access to the latest entry this weekend, but I have to say that this game isn't for everyone. This is a simulator in the stricter sense of the word. You will be managing your farm, operating realistic machinery, and dealing with various weather conditions that threaten your harvest. You can also get into raising animals in this version for another layer of challenge and immersion. If you can vibe with the more procedural and slow pace of this experience, it is a very addictive cozy game. Farming Simulator 25 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. GTA 5 This is more of a PSA than anything else since everyone knows what GTA 5 is, if you don't own it already. However, if you don't, you can see what all the hype is about with Game Pass right now ahead of both GTA 6 and another crime drama game coming up, Mafia: The Old Country. While that upcoming game isn't an open world, that series still takes heavy narrative inspiration from GTA. There are few games that manage to have as fun of a single player experience, optional side activities, and multiplayer that all fire on all cylinders. The fact that GTA 5 managed to pull that all off is why it has managed to stay relevant for over a decade now. GTA 5 is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
