PlayStation Hit With More Layoffs Following Recent Game Cancellations
The PlayStation-owned studio Visual Arts was hit with fresh layoffs this week amid a further restructuring of Sony's U.S. game development operations. While some of the cuts included staff who had contributed to recently canceled projects like an upcoming live-service game at Bend Studio, a source told Kotaku the layoffs were more widespread than that.
Earlier this week, an unknown number of staff at the Visual Arts group based out of San Diego were informed that their last day at Sony would be March 7. The team provides internal art and technical support to first-party PlayStation studios, and worked closely with Naughty Dog on the recent Last of Us Part 1 and 2 remasters among other projects.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
'It was tough waking up to messages that many friends and former coworkers from PSVA were laid off this morning,' former PSVA project manager Abby LeMaster, now at Riot Games, posted on LinkedIn on Monday. 'The layoffs today hit hard. PSVA let go of developers with decades of subject matter expertise; talent that will be extraordinarily difficult to recoup. This industry can be unpredictable, but the skill, experience, and passion of the people I worked with at PSVA are undeniable.'
The layoffs come after an expensive failure in last year's Concord, new rounds of live-service project cancellations including a reported God of War spin-off at BluePoint Games, and a reorganization within the top echelons of Sony leadership. In January, Hiroki Totoki became the company's new CEO and Hideaki Nishino became the sole CEO of PlayStation, with Hermen Hulst, who had previously been co-CEO, reporting to him as the ongoing head of PlayStation Studios.
The latest cuts at the PlayStation Studios Visual Arts group follow an emerging trend of game companies pulling back development resources from expensive U.S.-based offices. Last year during a business briefing, Hulst said there had been 'pressure on the cost side' as Sony laid off hundreds amid spiraling first-party blockbuster game development budgets.
'For every title, we have really rigorous review processes where we focus on the sustainability of our investments in these titles,' he said at the time. 'We include areas such as looking at what can be outsourced, for example, to avoid too high peak resource on development teams because costs can be sticky. We're looking at co-development options in areas where the costs per resource is maybe somewhat lower than the average or on the American west coast.'

Can Gaelic football finally have its video game hit?
It was 20 years ago that video-gaming Irish sports fans had their prayers answered. Fifa, Pro Evolution Soccer, Madden NFL – back in 2005, these were the sports games dominating living rooms. Indeed, some still are today, helping to make the sports video game industry a £17bn-per-year behemoth. But while most sports, from snooker to bizarre basketball superstar kung-fu tie-ins, had a title to offer, fans of Ireland's national sports - Gaelic football and hurling - had never seen their heroes in pixelated glory. That is until Gaelic Games: Football dropped in November 2005. The highly anticipated release, which saw eager gamers queued outside one store in Belfast, became one of Sony's biggest selling games in Ireland. And, as was the pre-peak online gaming style at the time, those who wanted to beat their mates had to invite them over and gather around a defiantly non-flat screen TV. One of those was Peadar McMahon, then a student in Belfast, who remembers "big sessions playing the game, having a laugh with friends". The game was not well-received. "Seriously flawed" declared the Sunday Times in a dismayed 3/10 review. "Devastatingly awful" condemned Irish culture website in a 2018 lookback piece. Peadar is a little more diplomatic – "not a great game" he recalled – but he has reason for diplomacy since, poor or not, Gaelic Games: Football gave him an idea: What more could a game like this do? "I took the game as impetus to go and do something about it because I'm doing computer science, loved games from no age - and maybe I could do something?" Two decades, one career in financial software and a £30k Kickstarter later, Belfast studio Buck Eejit Games, formed four years ago by Peadar, is set to be the first to dive back into the Gaelic games market since that ill-fated series. Buck Eejit is one of about 40 firms active in Northern Ireland's burgeoning video games industry, a scene non-existent when Peadar graduated from Queen's University. And the dozen-strong team - a tiny group compared to the huge numbers working at behemoths like EA – are in crunch time to get Gaelic Football '25 finished for a summer release: 16-hour days every day and not much time for anything else, including three kids in Peadar's case. "It's a lot to undertake, you're putting a lot aside to get the game – the dream, the passion project – over the line," he said. The scale of the challenge is not lost on him. While the likes of football, F1 or golf can tap into a huge video gaming fan base, Gaelic games are niche sports – huge in Ireland but with a relatively limited global market. In other words, a "risk", said Peadar, given the amount of hours and expense required to make a game. It also means nailing the concept for both die-hard GAA fans and non-fans, said Úna-Minh Kavanagh, a video games producer with the Irish studio Gambrinous who has written extensively about games and the industry. "For a global audience, it would be a 'new' sport for them to learn and jam with," she said. "It could easily gain a following if key Irish influencers hop on board, and I think they may do because it's such an Irish thing – especially given the lacklustre response to the original game." For her, the biggest failing of the original – and its sequel – was it didn't capture the "tribalism, excitement and thrill of being at a GAA match or even playing in one". Created by defunct Australian studio IR Gurus, who used their pre-existing Australian Rules football game as a template, its development was beset by issues according to an oral history by Irish news site - a small team, working on a shoestring, recreating a sport they had no familiarity with. The game did sell, but copies soon became a common sight in second-hand stores. When Irish YouTuber PKMX, real name Matt Murphy, decided to review the game, he found copies so easy to find he now has what he believes is the world's biggest collection of the series - 18 copies, costing a grand total of €15 (£12.50). "Put GAA in a video game, people are going to pick it up," he said. "But after people realised it was terrible, they (game copies) were everywhere." PKMX's review of Gaelic Games: Football was not kind, but Matt has some sympathy for the "overworked and underfunded" studio behind it. "They had their hands full. They'd never seen a match, had a tiny budget. It was never going to work out." As for the new effort, he can see some similarities between IR Gurus and Buck Eejit in terms of team size – but what the Belfast studio lacks in resources it can make up with passion and feel for the sport. "They grew up with the GAA, they understand the thrill of the game. "The pressure is on for players not to experience déjà vu – people don't want to be disappointed again." That "cultural nuance" could be key, agrees Úna-Minh. "There's something special knowing the team understands what GAA is all about. Whether it works out or not is another question, but it's a solid foundation." So what does this solid foundation mean for Gaelic Football '25? For one thing, Peadar said, with a laugh, of the team of 12 there's probably only a couple, including him, who grew up with the Gaelic games. But they're keeping the focus on playability above all else. That means some minor modifications to Gaelic football's basic rules – for instance players are allowed six steps when carrying the ball rather than the mandated four as it simply played better, said Peadar. Meanwhile, sweeping new rules introduced in the sport won't be in the final game as they came in the middle of its development cycle. A lack of resources also meant some tough choices. There will be no online mode and, despite about 18 months of conversations with the Gaelic Games Association (GAA), no official licences meaning no real player names. Inspired by Pro Evolution Soccer's approach in decades past, the game will instead feature extensive editing capabilities so players can change names and counties as much as they want. These decisions can be revisited via updates or, if things go well, sequels - in the meantime, said Peadar, the focus is on finishing the game for a summer release. Is he feeling any pressure? There's a lot riding on the team, he acknowledged, but if he's fazed by the prospect the game "gets panned and nobody buys it", it doesn't show. Instead he seems like a man content that the best effort had gone towards making the best game the team could make. Reaction at a playtest for punters at GamerFest Dublin in May garnered a positive response. And the finish line is in sight. "We've been at this coming up to three years so it's about time we got this off our table and into people's hands." And when they do, said Matt, people will definitely buy it - and maybe more. ‘R-Type Delta: HD Boosted' Really Needed The M2 Treatment
The classic shmup 'R-Type Delta' is getting an HD update. R-Type Delta is one of the undisputed shmup classics on the original PlayStation, so this HD release really has a lot to live up to. Of all the great shmups on the PlayStation, two really stood out: G-Darius and R-Type Delta. Don't get me wrong, Einhänder was pretty cool, but not in the same league as these two. A few years back, we were treated with G-Darius HD on basically every platform out there. Developed by retro porting masters M2, the HD aspect of the game was handled masterfully. Now, along comes R-Type Delta, and it too is now getting the HD treatment, but it's not exactly hitting its mark. This is not to say that City Connection does bad work, far from it. The recent Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute was excellently done. However, that game never saw a Western release back when it was on the Sega Saturn, and its art style was old-school 2D pixel art. Put simply, releasing the game as it was with an English localization was pretty much the expected remit, and City Connection certainly delivered on that. R-Type Delta is an entirely different beast, though. Yes, it is functionally a 2D side-scrolling shmup, but the bulk of the artwork is in 3D. It also had some amazing art for its period, even more so than the epic G-Darius. Now, as far as we know, the latest trailer (shown below) doesn't list M2's involvement, so I'm taking that to mean they are not involved. If it turns out that M2 is involved, it's clear that they've either been held back or not involved as much as they needed to be relative to their other games. Put simply, comparing this trailer to the work M2 did on G-Darius HD just makes my heart sink. Of all the R-Type games that really needed some proper HD love, it's definitely Delta. Somewhat related, there are also some amazing toys made by Ques-Q for R-Type Delta, namely the R-9A2 Delta and R-13 Cerberus. Both of which come highly recommended if you can still find them in the wild. Does your OLED TV look funny? Here are 5 common issues and how to diagnose them
OLED TVs aren't perfect. Despite their reputation of being some of the best TVs money can buy, OLED displays are susceptible to some odd visual quirks that range from minor blemishes like color banding to major issues like image retention. Having been in the TV-testing business for over a decade, I've seen everything from the earliest OLED models all the way up to the latest and best OLEDs on the market today and have needed to troubleshoot a fair number of them over the years. Here's a list of the strange oddities you might encounter with an OLED TV and whether or not they're worth worrying about. Though not a prevalent issue in recent years, some OLED TVs — particularly WOLED TVs used by LG and Sony — demonstrate minor color tinting when viewed a few feet away from a head-on position. Typically, the effect is most pronounced when the screen displays white a or near-white picture, like during the broadcast of a hockey game. The white portions of the picture will subtly shift into a pale pink or green, shifting as the viewer moves. As mentioned, it's been a few years since I've seen this issue, but folks with OLED TVs from around 2021 to 2023 might notice it from time to time. The cause of the tinting isn't one for concern. Fortunately, the cause of the tinting isn't one for concern, most likely having to do with variance in manufacturing. Based on reports across the web, the severity of the issue appears to be random, and I can personally attest that I've never witnessed a case so severe as to compromise the picture entirely. While the above photo has been edited to illustrate the issue, it's plain to see that the OLED depicted is struggling to display a dark gray screen without saddling the left and right sides of the picture with a bold, pink column. Unfortunately, in my experience, this visual artifact tends to be more noticeable than the off-axis tint detailed above. This is because it tends to rear its head during any dark scene with low color saturation. In other words, a background wall doesn't need to be gray for the discoloration to appear. Black-and-white content will bring it out almost immediately. Much like the off-axis color tinting, this problem affects OLED TVs seemingly at random. However, not once have I seen the issue manifest on quantum dot-enhanced OLEDs like Samsung's excellent flagship, the S95D OLED TV. This leads me to believe that QD-OLEDs aren't as susceptible to the root cause. In my experience, QD-OLED TVs like the Samsung S95D tend to exhibit fewer visual quirks than TVs with WOLED panels. The S95D (one of our favorite OLEDs of its year) delivers an incredible picture and a sensational suite of features for gaming, streaming and beyond. To check your OLED TV for this issue, switch off your lights and, on your OLED, pull up this Dirty Screen Effect YouTube video uploaded by Sunil Raman. This short clip will start with a 100% black screen and gradually move up the grayscale until it displays 100% white. The dark gray-colored slides at 5% to 20% are particularly useful at coaxing out the pink tint. As far as I know, if you do discover pink-colored blotches, it can't be addressed outside of replacing the TV. Above is a close-up of a QD-OLED TV panel displaying a black-and-white checkerboard pattern. If you look along the edges of the black squares, you'll notice green- and magenta-colored rows of pixels. This is a result of QD-OLED's triangular subpixel structure, which places the green subpixel above red and blue. Fortunately, this minor, near-imperceptible color fringing is not a substantial mark against QD-OLED TVs. In general, you're most likely to notice this fringing when light-colored title cards or subtitles are on screen. Unless you intend on using a QD-OLED display as a monitor (or if you plan on regularly sitting very close to a QD-OLED TV), it's not a cause for concern. On rare occasions, I've seen OLED TVs arrive out of the box with vertical or horizontal banding across most or all of the screen. They usually manifest as straight lines of varying widths. Like the localized pink tint, this banding is most noticeable when large portions of the picture are white or gray. In my experience, OLED banding tends to work itself out after about five to ten hours of use. While it's frustrating to see these imperfections shortly after setting up a brand-new TV, I've got some good news: In my experience, OLED banding tends to work itself out after about five to ten hours of use. In the past, when I've reached out to LG about one of its TVs exhibiting this banding, a representative has recommended that I run the display's pixel refresher. Known as Pixel Cleaning on LG OLEDs (or Pixel Refresh on Samsung OLEDS), this process automatically adjusts the luminance of pixels depending on whether or not an unevenness is detected. Be warned, however: I would not manually run these pixel-cleaning features with any regularity. They can be aggressive over time — akin to scouring your display — and there's a good chance your OLED TV is already running a lighter, preventative version of the feature automatically when it's off. If none of these measures eliminates the TV's banding issue, I would brush up on the warranty and reach out to customer service. Burn-in is the only one of these issues that happens as a direct result of how an OLED TV is used. It describes the ghostly image of previously viewed content, now embedded within the display after many hours of use. Due to the organic nature of OLED displays, they're particularly susceptible to burn-in — or at least they were. Burn-in was something of an OLED boogeyman in the early days of the technology, but brands have built up plenty of defense against the issue in the years since. For instance, all major OLED-makers offer a pixel-shifting feature that occasionally (and subtly) moves the picture to ensure that each pixel is switching things up from time to time. The aforementioned pixel refreshing cycle remains an option, too, if you're noticing some image retention taking place. In general, the OLED TVs of today are far better equipped to prevent burn-in than earlier models. In general, the OLED TVs of today are far better equipped to prevent burn-in than earlier models. However, it still wouldn't hurt to give your TV a rest every now and then, particularly if you play games with static HUDs, or watch content with chyrons and/or tickers. If your OLED TV is exhibiting burn-in, it might be covered by the brand's standard warranty. LG, for instance, offers a one-year warranty on most of its OLED TVs which ought to cover burn-in, but the likelihood that you'll be dealing with OLED burn-in that soon is very, very low. Personally, I wouldn't let the prospect of burn-in stop me from shopping for an OLED TV. Nor would I let any of these issues dissuade me. The truth is, no TV is perfect — regardless of display technology. Due to the nature of their hardware, OLED TVs certainly need to be coddled a bit more relative to their LCD/LED counterparts, but those TVs come with their own potential quirks, too.
