India beat England to seal T20 cricket series as sub Rana vexes Buttler

Al Jazeera31-01-2025

Harshit Rana has claimed three wickets in his debatable appearance as a concussion substitute to help India to a series-clinching, 15-run victory against England in the fourth T20 International.
India overcame Saqib Mahmood's three-wicket burst on Friday to post a competitive 181-9 after half-centuries by Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.
England were 166 all out with two deliveries left in their innings as India grabbed an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
All-rounder Dube was hit on the helmet by a Jamie Overton bouncer, and seamer Rana replaced him despite it not being a like-for-like replacement as concussion substitute rules mandate.
'When Dube came back two overs into the chase, I was told [about being the concussion substitute],' Rana told broadcasters. 'I have been waiting for this moment to prove myself,' he said of his 'dream debut'.
England captain Jos Buttler was less impressed, however.
'It's not a like-for-like replacement. We don't agree with that,' Buttler told reporters after the game. 'Dube has either put on 25 miles per hour [40 kilometres per hour] with the ball or Harshit Rana has really improved his batting.
'I still think we should have gone on to win the match, but we disagree with the decision.'
England fast bowler Saqib also impressed on his debut as he began with a three-wicket maiden over to rattle India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium.
India opener Sanju Samson fluffed his pull shot, number three Tilak Varma perished at deep third leg and captain Suryakumar Yadav was caught at short mid-on, prolonging his lean patch in the series.
Abhishek Sharma (29) and Rinku Singh (30) propped up India before the left-right combination of Dube and Pandya counterattacked during their 87-run partnership.
Pandya and Dube smashed identical 53s, but India managed only three runs from the eventful last over from Overton, losing three wickets in the process.
Phil Salt (23) and Ben Duckett (39) milked 32 runs from the first three overs of India's seam bowling, prompting Suryakumar to employ spin from both ends.
Thanks to their unbridled aggression, England were 62-1 after the first six powerplay overs compared with India's 47-3.
India struck back through spin as Ravi Bishnoi (3-28) dismissed Duckett and Buttler in his successive overs while Axar Patel removed Salt.
Harry Brook (51) hit Rana for back-to-back sixes en route to a 25-ball fifty, but Varun Chakravarthy turned the match on its head, claiming two wickets in his final over.
Brook fell attempting a scoop shot against the spinner, and two balls later, Brydon Carse was snared at deep square leg as India tightened their grip on the contest.
Mumbai hosts the fifth and final T20 International on Sunday, which will be followed by three one-dayers between the sides.

India beat Australia by 295 runs; take 1-0 lead in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Captain Bumrah and fellow pacer Siraj take 3 wickets apiece as hosts are bowled out for 238 in the first Test at Perth. Published On 25 Nov 2024 India have made a stunning comeback in Test cricket to hammer Australia by 295 runs and win the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. The visitors' fast-bowling stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah and fellow pacer Mohammed Siraj took three wickets apiece as they romped home to a statement win and left Australia searching for answers on Monday. India came into the crucial and much-hyped five-match series on the back of a shock home series whitewash at the hands of visiting New Zealand, and played the first match without their regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, Bumrah led from the front with a superb display of fast bowling and his eight wickets in the match earned him the player of the match award. 'Very happy with the beginning, we were put under pressure in the first innings but the way we responded after that, I'm really proud of the team,' said Bumrah. 'Obviously, this wicket was a little less spicy than the last one that I played here, but we were really well prepared. 'So I was just telling everyone to have faith in their process and ability, because over here at this moment, you have an opportunity to do something special.' The hosts were bowled out for 238 after tea on day four, with paceman Harshit Rana wrapping up the fourth innings by clean-bowling keeper Alex Carey for 36 to secure India's 1-0 lead. The last time Australia won a home series after losing the opening test was 55 years ago against West Indies. 'Fairly disappointing,' said Australia captain Pat Cummins after the match. 'It was just one of those games where not much went right. We didn't really give ourselves a chance in a few different facets … so there's a few different areas we've got to clean up.' After electing to bat on a seaming first day, India were all out for 150 before fighting back to dismiss Australia for 104 courtesy of a Bumrah five-fer. Dual centurions Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal lifted the tourists to 487-6 declared, setting a huge fourth-innings target of 534 for the hosts. Resuming day four on 12-3, the hosts quickly lost Usman Khawaja (four) after the opener mistimed Siraj (3-51) to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Rana (1-69) bowled with fire, temporarily immobilising Steve Smith with a rib-tickler and getting Travis Head jumping as the pair added 62. Steve Smith, returning to his favoured number four position after an ill-fated opening experiment, fell caught-behind on 17 to Siraj. Head crunched boundaries aplenty on his way to his 89 but fell shy of an eighth test ton when he edged to Pant off Bumrah (3-42), who picked up eight wickets for the match. Mitchell Marsh put up 47 before chopping debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy onto his stumps, and Dhrev Jurel showed off his reflexes at short-leg to catch Mitchell Starc (12) off Washington Sundar (2-48) before tea. Washington bowled his Australia spin counterpart Nathan Lyon after the break for a duck as India marched towards a welcome victory, which comes after they were humbled 3-0 at home by New Zealand earlier this month. Tailender Josh Hazlewood remained unbeaten on four. The win also helped India climb back on top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC) table. The top two teams at the end of the current WTC cycle will contest in the final in June 2025. India have held the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since 2016-17.

Rahul silences doubters as India openers dominate Australia

Makeshift opener KL Rahul repaid the faith India have shown in him despite recent struggles, helping to put the tourists in the driving seat against Australia in the first Test in Perth on Saturday. Rahul finished unbeaten on 62 as India reached 172 without loss at the close on Day Two, leading by 218 having bowled Australia out for 104. The 32-year-old has played a chanceless knock, silencing his critics by balancing the youthful positivity of Yashasvi Jaiswal (90*) with maturity borne from 10 years in, and sometimes out, of the test team. 'They worked very hard,' paceman Harshit Rana said of India's opening pair. 'It was not easy at the start but they spent some time in the middle after which they faced no real problem.' Rahul adopted the same mature approach on a dizzying opening day too, when India were rolled for 150 inside two sessions by Australia's seamers. The Bengaluru-born right-hander was the only top-order batsman intent on preserving his wicket, but fortune did not favour him. The third umpire judged on review that Snicko showed ball-edging-bat off Mitchell Starc to keeper Alex Carey and Rahul had to trudge off for 26. It is familiar territory, though, for a player who has been trolled mercilessly online for his inconsistent form. The reasons range from a bizarre dismissal playing for India A this month in which he left a straight ball, to his low Indian Premier League strike rate – his franchise Lucknow Super Giants released him this year. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has leapt to Rahul's defence, praising his versatility and ability to bat wherever required. A newborn for Rohit and a new chance for Rahul In this Test, it was a recall as opener in place of Rohit Sharma who is not playing due to the birth of his second child. 'The way he saw off the new ball at the start, it was very useful for the team because if you don't lose early wickets, batting becomes a lot easier,' Rana said. Rahul has struck four boundaries during his 153-ball vigil, but would have been most pleased by a single in the 48th over. With a gentle poke of Mitchell Marsh to third man, he brought up his 16th test fifty – and received the warm acknowledgement of the 32,368-strong crowd. Australian captain Pat Cummins was left searching for answers, and part-timers Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne were unable to provide any, an ever-expansive Jaiswal launched spinner Nathan Lyon for a maximum over long on to put a cherry on the tourists' day. 'We've got some problems to solve ahead of us. There's no doubt we're clearly well behind in the game at this stage, so India have got the driver's seat at the moment,' said Australia coach Andrew McDonald. Earlier, Australia number nine Mitchell Starc scored 26 and was the only batsman to provide any meaningful resistance as Jasprit Bumrah and Rana (3-48) took a session to prize out the final three wickets. Bumrah claimed his 11th test five-wicket haul with his first ball of the day, pitching back-of-a-length and seaming away from Alex Carey (21) who nicked to keeper Rishabh Pant.
