MLB is calling up its first female umpire, promoting Jen Pawol for Saturday's Marlins-Braves game

NEW YORK (AP) — Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball when she works games this weekend between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
Pawol will work the bases in Saturday's doubleheader at Truist Park and the plate on Sunday, MLB said Wednesday.
Pawol, a 48-year-old from New Jersey, worked spring training games in 2024 and this year.
MLB's move comes 28 years after the gender barrier for game officials was broken in the NBA, 10 years after it ended the NFL and three years after the men's soccer World Cup employed a female referee.
Pawol in 2024 became the first woman to umpire big league spring training games since Ria Cortesio in 2007. Cortesio spent nine years in the minor leagues, including the last five in the Double-A Southern League, then was released after the 2007 season.
Pawol was an all-state softball and soccer player in New Jersey for three seasons in each sport at West Milford High School. She went to Hofstra on a softball scholarship and became a three-time all-conference pick and was on the USA Baseball women's national baseball team in 2001.
Pawol got a master's degree and was living in the Binghamton area of New York and taking teacher certification classes at Elmira College while still playing on the side.
'I wasn't really satisfied,' she said last year. 'Coming off of a huge competitive career, just playing locally, I wasn't getting my fix. And I remember looking at the umpire and being like, I think that's it. I got to go for that.'
After umpiring NCAA softball from 2010-16, she attended an MLB umpire tryout camp in 2015, was invited to the Umpire Training Academy at Vero Beach, Florida, and was offered a job in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.
Violet Palmer became the NBA's first woman referee when she worked Dallas' opener at Vancouver on Oct. 31, 1997, and Sarah Thomas was the NFL's first woman on-field official when she served as line judge for Kansas City's game at Houston on Sept. 13, 2015.
Stéphanie Frappart of France became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup game when she worked Germany's 4-2 group stage win over Costa Rica on Dec. 1, 2022, and Rebecca Walsh became the first to referee in England's Premier League when she officiated Burnley's 2-0 win at Fulham on Dec. 23, 2023.

Travis Hunter to play both ways during Jaguars' preseason opener against Steelers

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen told reporters Thursday that his starters will see the field Saturday in the team's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That, of course, includes No. 2 overall pick and two-way star Travis Hunter, who Coen said will in fact play both ways versus the Steelers. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is taking a different approach. Longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced an extensive list of starters who will be healthy scratches for the exhibition. That group includes quarterback Aaron Rodgers; wide receiver DK Metcalf; tight ends Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth; running back Jaylen Warren; cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay; defensive end Cameron Heyward and linebacker T.J. Watt, among others. "It has nothing to do with injury," Tomlin said. "They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you. Because of their experience and where they are in their careers, oftentimes I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunity for those that need more preparation or more opportunity to display their talents and so forth." While fans will have to wait to see what Rodgers looks like in the Pittsburgh offense, it looks like they'll get a glimpse of Hunter on both sides of the ball in Jacksonsville. Hunter, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, is listed as a starting wideout and backup cornerback on the Jaguars' first first unofficial depth chart, which the team released Monday. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound phenom is coming off a prolific final season at Colorado, where he played 753 snaps on offense, 776 on defense and 23 more on special teams in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus. In the process, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus he ran for one additional score. At cornerback, he picked off four passes and notably forced a fumble that clinched an overtime victory against Baylor. During training camp, Jacksonville eased Hunter into practicing both positions, allowing him time to fully focus on each playbook before playing two ways in the same day. Coen went on the "The Rich Eisen Show" on Monday and suggested 80% of the Jags' offensive snaps as a potential game-by-game target for Hunter this season, with the hope of him trying to match that snap count percentage on defense as well. "We've done more offense because that was where more of the development was necessary," Coen said Monday of Hunter's work in camp, via "The Rich Eisen Show." "It's so much more natural [for him] to just go walk out on the field and play corner. That's what he's done. He can go do that. Now, there's a lot of checks, there's a lot of calls, there's a lot of different things that go to that. But offensively, we felt like there was a little bit more development that was necessary, and it's a lot more ball — just a lot more scheme and words and calls. "Every single day is completely packed, from the moment that he arrives to the moment he leaves, with making sure that he is meeting with somebody at all times." Eisen proposed that Hunter could even win both NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards this season, and Coen agreed that "it's possible." That journey officially begins in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. But Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers will provide a sneak peek at how Hunter's two-way skill set translates to the NFL.

Jurgen Klopp shared Darwin Nunez warning immediately after signing Liverpool striker

Jurgen Klopp warned Liverpool was getting a "work in progress" when it agreed an £85 million ($114M) deal to sign Darwin Nunez. Who, by the way, will receive a staggering salary increase. Fast forward three years and the 26-year-old Uruguayan is poised to end his confusing spell on Merseyside after Liverpool agreed a £46.3 million ($62.2M) sale with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. Nunez arrived at Anfield to much fanfare in the same summer that Manchester City forked out £51M ($68.5M) for Erling Haaland. But while Haaland has been an untold success, Nunez has largely failed to deliver and his time at Liverpool will be remembered more for his glaring misses than his goalscoring prowess. Though Liverpool fans can't say that former boss Klopp, who brought Nunez to the club from Benfica, didn't warn them... READ MORE: Liverpool told it could upgrade on Ibrahima Konate for free amid contract wait READ MORE: Florian Wirtz justifies $156M price tag as he receives huge honor just weeks after Liverpool move Speaking after Liverpool confirmed Nunez's signing, Klopp said: "It's important we all recognise we are getting a 'work in progress' with Darwin - he recognises that himself. I love how much focus and humility he has. "We have wonderful attacking options already and he becomes part of that now. So there is no pressure on him at all. He signs for a very long time and we intend to nurture his talent and see it grow." Liverpool paid an initial £64M ($86M) to sign Nunez with the rest of the transfer package made up of potential add-ons - some of which have never been met. His first few games in a red shirt provided the perfect insight into the Jekyll and Hyde character Liverpool were getting. After scoring twice in a late cameo off the bench to win the Community Shield 3-1 against Haaland's City - sparking a short-lived rivalry between the strikers - Nunez followed that up with a goal against Fulham on his Premier League debut before a red card for a headbutt on Crystal Palace's Joachim Anderson on his Anfield bow. Late match-winning braces at Newcastle and Brentford plus a screamer against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup were arguably the highlight for a player capable of the brilliant and the bizarre, which ultimately led him to become somewhat of a cult hero among the club's fans. In all he scored 40 goals in 143 appearances - hardly a terrible return, but not what Liverpool were expecting when they'd shelled out such a mammoth fee, though he does still leave a Premier League title winner. Nunez's departure could help Liverpool seal a deal for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish international has been forced to train alone as he pushes for a move to Anfield, with Liverpool expected to return with an improved bid after Newcastle rejected their offer of $140M.

Tennessee Titans training camp: Sights and sounds from joint practice with Bucs

The Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finished up an intense joint practice ahead of their preseason game on Saturday. While the session was uneventful in the Florida heat, it appears both teams got in some quality reps and improved. The practice was chippy, with both teams playing with an edge. It was an efficient outing for the offense, which took another step forward with its red zone work, including what has been described as their best effort of training camp. The defense was physical and held up against the Bucs' offense. While it wasn't a dominant performance with both sides making plays, it was another solid outing for the unit. With the session in the books, here are some sights and sounds from the joint practice.
