Mahayuti rift widens as Devendra Fadnavis issues orders against ministers' staff

India Today7 hours ago

Tensions within Maharashtra's ruling Mahayuti alliance have intensified as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis moves to curb the unauthorised retention of Personal Secretaries (PS) and Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) by several ministers from the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).Despite repeated directives, some PSs and OSDs have continued to serve their preferred ministers, prompting Fadnavis to issue disciplinary notices to six non-compliant staffers. The controversy involves Shiv Sena ministers Sanjay Rathod, Shambhuraj Desai, Bharat Gogawale, and Gulabrao Patil, as well as NCP leaders Dattatray Bharne and Chhagan Bhujbal. The appointments of their PSs were earlier stalled following allegations of irregularities. Sources say several of these aides - some of whom have held their positions for years - are under scrutiny for alleged corruption and amassing disproportionate assets. In an earlier move to bring transparency, Fadnavis had appointed two officials from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) to screen and interview all PS and OSD candidates for the cabinet. This vetting process led to the stalling of multiple appointments, especially those of long-serving aides. However, continued defiance by certain staffers has now triggered tougher action.'These notices are a serious step to ensure accountability. The government is committed to rooting out corruption and maintaining discipline,' said a senior bureaucrat, requesting anonymity. The opposition has seized upon the development as a sign of growing discord within the Mahayuti coalition.'This isn't just about personal secretaries; it exposes the lack of coordination and trust among alliance partners. The Chief Minister's orders are being openly defied, which shows how weak his control is,' said Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar.Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, echoed this sentiment, saying complaints had been received about corrupt PSs and OSDs. He added that the issue would be raised during the upcoming monsoon session and that the notices were a necessary response.Meanwhile, cabinet minister Ashish Shelar stated that only Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis could offer complete clarity on the matter.- EndsMust Watch

Experts differ with CM on 26% Maha power tariff dip

1 2 Nagpur: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said power tariffs in the state will be slashed by 26% in five years, starting with 10% dip in the initial year. The new tariffs will be applicable from July. He also lauded Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) order on a review petition by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) regarding multi-year tariffs. However, power experts disagree with the CM and claim that the MERC order will raise tariffs, not reduce them. MSEDCL had filed a multi-year tariff petition before MERC in March for years 2025-26 to 2029-30. The MERC, after reviewing the petition and conducting public consultation, passed the order approving truing up of past years' annual revenue requirement, which was termed 'historic' by power experts as it reduced power tariffs for all consumers, including residential, commercial, and industrial. The MSEDCL then filed a review petition, after which MERC stayed its own order and has now issued a fresh diktat. "We are thankful to MERC for issuing this order on MSEDCL's petition," said Fadnavis in a social media post. In the past, Fadnavis added, it was common to see petitions proposing a 10% hike in electricity tariffs. But this time, for the first time ever, MSEDCL filed a petition to reduce tariffs, and MERC has responded with this historic order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The benefits will extend to all three consumer categories — domestic, industrial, and commercial, said Fadnavis. The CM also said 70% of electricity users in the state consume less than 100 units a month, and they will experience the highest rate cut of 10%. "Work on the Chief Minister Solar Agricultural Feeder Scheme 2.0 is progressing at a war footing to ensure our farmers receive reliable daytime power supply. In addition, upcoming power purchase agreements will focus heavily on green energy, leading to substantial savings in power procurement costs. These very savings enabled MSEDCL to propose the rate cut," said Fadnavis. Speaking to TOI, former independent director of MSEB and power expert, RB Goenka, said the MERC has done a U-turn. "The first MERC order was historic as it reduced power tariffs. However, these new tariffs would increase the bills for consumers. The new time-of-day (ToD) introduced in the new order would make rooftop solar completely unviable for consumers over 10KV capacity. It will hit commercial and industrial consumers the most," said Goenka. Another expert Mahendra Jichkar claimed the tariffs for residential and commercial consumers will go up. "Calculations show bills of consumers will definitely go up and will impact the common citizens," he said. MSEDCL, however, said among the key features of the order are a 10% additional time-of-day concession for domestic consumers using smart meters during daytime hours, and incentives for households generating solar power. Goenka, who had filed an intervention over the MSEDCL's review petition, said MERC did not conduct any public hearing before issuing the order. "The MERC did not even provide the intervenors with the copy of MSEDCL's review plea and did not even consider our objection. This order should be challenged," he said.

Nashik will become a hub for defence-aerospace manufacturing in near future, says Fadnavis

Nashik: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced that Nashik would become a centre for defence and aerospace manufacturing in the near future. "Nashik will be the next destination where we will locate industries from defence and aerospace sectors. We see a lot of investment coming to Nashik," the CM said, while speaking at the conclave of industries organised by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Mumbai on Wednesday. Fadnavis said though defence corridors were established in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra was attracting the highest investments in defence manufacturing and technology. State govt is planning to develop a new defence corridor in Nashik, and between Ahilyanagar and Pune. Fadnavis emphasised that Nashik would specifically target the defence and aerospace sectors, making it the next destination for industries in these fields. "The new magnet we are creating is Vadhavan. The port at Vadhavan will keep Maharashtra ahead of any other state by 20 years once we complete this port. Today, JNPT is India's biggest port as it accounts for 60% of India's total traffic. But Vadhavan will be three times bigger than the JNPT port. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40세 넘고 PC만 있으면? 이 게임 완전 내 거임! Fadnavis said state govt was planning to have an access-controlled road to the Samruddhi Highway via Nashik that would also benefit Nashik. Manish Rawal, vice-president, Nashik Industries & Manufacturers' Association (NIMA), termed the CM's announcement positive. "We have been demanding govt for many years for the setting up of the defence cluster here considering the potential Nashik has. Nashik already has a defence PSU unit like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. There are also some units manufacturing defence spare parts here. Hence, promoting Nashik as the defence and aerospace manufacturing hub will boost the sector and development in Nashik," Rawal added.

Emergency Detainees Honoured On 50th Anniversary

1 2 Nagpur: On the 50th anniversary of one of India's darkest political chapters, the Emergency of 1975, the state govt, along with the district administration, felicitated those who chose imprisonment over silence. At the ceremony held at the Zilla Niyojan Bhavan on Wednesday, hundreds of former prisoners, now in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s, gathered for a moment that was long overdue, holding hands of their young family members who were not even born at the time of the Emergency. The honour included certificates of appreciation in recognition of their resistance against the suppression of democratic freedoms during the 21-month Emergency. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis , who was in the state capital for a similar function for emergency detainees, sent a congratulatory message that was read aloud by tehsildar Santosh Khande. "Those who chose to go to jail during the Emergency saved India's democracy," Fadnavis said in his message, adding, "Their defiance against the dictatorship protected the spirit of free expression and constitutional values. On Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding democracy. " Veterans like Bindumadhav alias Banduji Dev, Umabai Pimpalkar, Devendra Vaidya and Sandhyatai Pandit were among those present. "We faced humiliation back then, but today's honour restores that dignity. This ceremony is not just for us; it's for the next generation to remember what was fought for," Dev said. A photo exhibition depicting the struggle during the Emergency was inaugurated by the veterans. Rare photographs, archival material, and personal stories of political prisoners like Shripad Risaldar, Jayant Puranik, Pushpatai Totade and others were on display. District collector Vipin Itankar, Zilla Parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, additional commissioner Tejusingh Pawar and other senior officials presented the certificates on behalf of the state. A documentary film based on exclusive interviews with former detainees was also unveiled, offering an emotional lens into the lives impacted by the Emergency's clampdown on civil liberties. The event concluded with heartfelt acknowledgements from district information officer Vinod Rapatwar. The programme was hosted and coordinated by tehsildars Snehlata Medhe Patil and Shraddha Bagrao.
