Selena Gomez Launches Rare Beauty Perfume
Team Cosmo UK was lucky enough to get our hands on the much-anticipated launch over two months ago to test it before it hit shelves. So yes, I've been carrying around this little vial of top-secret juice for weeks, fibbing whenever someone asks me, 'You smell great, what are you wearing?' And now, finally, we can spill the tea. So, below I'm sharing my thoughts on the new launch that hits Sephora on August 7. A full size bottle (50ml) will retail for $75, but the scene will also be available for purchase in a travel size (10mil) for $30.
Grown-up, yet girlish and feminine without the need to be floral. To me, it smells like nuzzling into a fuzzy knit co-ord set that already has some of your favorite perfume on it from the last time you had it on. On first spray, and when you sniff it in the bottle, it really smells quite sweet—you can only overwhelmingly smell the caramel, pistachio and vanilla melding together and while it really smells like a fun, youthful bubble bath, I immediately thought I would hate it.
If I were to judge it by its opening notes only, this would be an entirely different review. As it settles in, though, the sandalwood really pulls through, and it becomes a scent you will be obsessed with. It wears really well on me, as time passes it becomes a scent I like more and more throughout the day, to the point that I feel a little reluctant to re-spray, in case it ruins what the scent has become.
A note on projection, now I don't think anyone was expecting a #beastmode type of perfume from our girl Selena, but in case you were wondering this is a personal fragrance. When people would comment on my scent, it would be when they reached in for a hug, not when I walked into a room.
Thanks to the pink pepper at the top and the skin musks at the base, it has a real sense of Glossier You about it, and the buttercream that specifically gives Glossier You Rêve that lingering vanilla sweetness is super similar in Rare Eau de Parfum.
Beauty can be so slapdash when it comes to inclusivity, and especially when it comes to accessibility being top of mind during product creation. But, for this launch, the team worked with a certified hand therapist and a team of packaging engineers to create an ergonomic fragrance bottle that makes dispensing the bottle comfortable for those with dexterity issues.

'Skyscraper' - YouTube "Skyscraper" is Lovato's earliest self-described "cry for help" song, which she'll go on to release more of. But in 2011, the pop star lifted the veil and told her fans that she wasn't okay. She'd opened up about dealing with addiction, eating disorders, and self-harming, the first time we've seen a child star of her caliber be so candid about fighting these battles. Lovato provided the self-empowerment ballad of the year with "Skyscraper," and her emotional delivery of the song, combined with her killer vocals, made this all the more powerful. 8. 'Stone Cold' - YouTube There are so few that depict the anguish of heartbreak and watching your lover move on, like Lovato does. Her audience responds to the heartbreaking ballads, where she paints a vivid picture of seeing someone date someone new. "Stone Cold" shows off her lower register as well as her ability to mix those gut-wrenching emotions into a poignant song. This song easily puts Lovato on the list of insanely talented balladeers. 7. 'Two Pieces' - YouTube "Two Pieces" is a propulsive track, where we see Lovato begging her lover to make things work on this pop-rock anthem. The song starts out with a drum and piano-assisted intro, which builds as she sets listeners into the song's setting. When the song hits the refrain and chorus, it explodes and it's filled with an electric guitar as she belts, "These dark clouds over me, rain down and roll away / We'll never fall apart, 'cause we fit together like / Two pieces of a broken heart." 6. 'Cool for the Summer' - YouTube I'll say it: Some of Lovato's down-the-middle pop music doesn't work for me. However, "Cool for the Summer" is a song in a lane all of it's own. This song is addictive, fresh, and grabs the listener by the collar of their shirt to take them on a ride they want to get on over and over. It's about letting go of your inhibitions, taking the dive into something exciting, and worrying about the repercussions later. It also combines all of the best parts of Lovato's talents, like her insanely skilled vocal agility and her chameleonic demeanor — which she can switch up for whatever the song she's singing needs. Are the lyrics a bit odd? Well, yes. But does the production completely overshadow the lyrics so they don't really matter in the long run? Also yes! 5. 'Happy Ending' - YouTube There are many standout tracks from Lovato's 2022 project, HOLY FVCK, but I feel in my heart of hearts that "Happy Ending" is the most underrated track on the LP. In fact, she doesn't hold back in the slightest on this album, in a way that we haven't gotten from her in years prior. In this song, Lovato wonders: "Am I gonna die trying to find my happy ending?" Knowing that Lovato has battled mental health struggles, addiction, and self-harm, it's a breath of fresh air to hear her being this candid while sharing her side of the story. For instance, she addresses the pressures of being a public figure who is actively fighting addiction. "Sure, I'm sober now / And everybody's proud / But I miss my vices," she sings. "And I tried to be your hero / I lent you my voice / I was your poster child / It was working for a while / But it didn't fill the void." As her fellow Disney alum once said, "Nobody's perfect" and talking about it with such candor works leaps and bounds better than trying to smile through the pain. 4. 'Substance' - YouTube "Substance" followed "Skin of My Teeth," thus serving as the second single to HOLY FVCK. Those two songs gave fans a clear warning: This album was going to be a no-holds-barred, cathartic release for Lovato, returning to her pop-punk roots. The last time Lovato truly dabbled in the rock aesthetic was in her early solo music career days as she began to make a name for herself outside of Disney. It's a perfect pop-rock song about wanting to forget about a guy (or person) who's done you wrong. She's not meek nor mousy. She roars over the blaring guitars and drums, wishing the guy the best but also wishing he would just get out of her life and out from under her skin. "Here We Go Again" was the lead single off her second album, completely annihilating any predictions of a sophomore slump after the song hit No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. 2. 'Anyone' - YouTube On this track, we hear something that we don't usually get from the pop star: imperfection—not only in the lyrical content, but in her vocal performance. Lovato has never sounded bad a day in her life, and this song is no different. But, as she's trying to keep it together and get through the song, you can hear her voice wavering, and she sounds like she's holding back tears as she unleashes this pent-up frustration and anger that she's dealt with while battling her inner demons. "Anyone, please send me anyone," she cries out to God, hoping he's listening. "Lord, is there anyone? I need someone." Lovato's had a tumultuous battle with addiction and mental health struggles, and in 2018, she suffered a near-fatal overdose — four days after she recorded the song. She took some time away from the spotlight, and her first public performance of this song was at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Everyone can see the cracks in the facade that she's been putting up for years. 1. '29' - YouTube Lovato is at her best when she's reflective because she's had to do it so much throughout her life. She's spoken about the mistreatment she's faced as a child, but rarely do we get something as shrewd and sharp as this. "29" is an unflinching look at a long-term relationship with a man, where she talks about feeling like she was manipulated and groomed. The song finds her at the age of her alleged groomer, whom many speculated to be her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama. The pair met when she was 17 and he was 29, but didn't publicly share that they were dating until she was 18. The lyrics pierce as Lovato looks back on the relationship, "Just five years a bleeder, student and a teacher / far from innocent, what the fuck's consent? / Numbers told you not to, but that didn't stop you," she sings through gritted teeth. "Finally 29 / funny just like you were at the time / Thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / But was it yours, was it mine?" She sings as if she's digging the knife right through the perpetrator and digging it in deeper with each line. HOLY FVCK is her best album, lyrically and vocally, and you'd be hard pressed to find a song as devastating as this. Celebrity Makeup Artist Mary Phillips Launches Her Own Brand, m.ph—Including A Nod To Her Viral Underpainting Technique
Veteran celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips—whose artistry has been seen on the faces of Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and Hailey Bieber—announced this week that she is debuting her own makeup line, which the company called 'a tightly edited collection of artist-grade, performance-driven essentials.' Known for her sculpted looks on a number of famous faces and her viral underpainting technique—more on that in a moment—Phillips brings more than 20 years of hands-on experience to the table. We might not all have a celebrity MUA at our disposal on a daily basis (but #goals), but according to the company, these first six products can help bring 'pro-level artistry into everyday routines.' The brand's first six products are available on its website and on on August 15; by August 25, they'll be in store at Sephora. Products include The Underpainting Palette, which retails for $64; The Underpainting Dual-Ended Sculpting Brush, priced at $38; the $36 Cheeky Cream Blush; The Cream Blush Brush at the same price; the Lip Ciggy Hydrating Lipstick, which costs $26; and, finally, The Overliner Lip Pencil at a $25 price point. 'I've seen the power of makeup when there is an artist behind it, and this collection was created to put that power in your hands,' Phillips told Forbes in a release. 'I love sharing my signature techniques, so when underpainting started to go viral, it was a clear sign to me that people are ready to really embrace these artistry-driven methods.' 'That's why I'm so excited to share this line, so everyone can experience the confidence and creativity that comes with having the right products and tools,' she added. Phillips's underpainting technique layers contour and highlight beneath foundation for a natural finish. The Underpainting Palette comes with one color corrector, two highlighters and two contours in three shades—light, medium and deep. Phillips's Cheeky Cream Blush comes in eight shades (including It's a Sin and Too Much Pinot), and the company's Lip Ciggy Hydrating Lipstick also comes in eight varieties, including Lose My Breath, First Base and Cherry Pie. The Overliner Lip Pencil, too, comes in eight shades, like Skinny Dip, French Exit and Double Shot. Her signature underpainting technique has garnered over 5.5 million views; she suggests using the color corrector first, then contour, then highlight—all before foundation is applied. 'For me, underpainting is like creating the bones under the skin,' Phillips told Refinery29. 'I like doing all the creams first as the 'bones' of the makeup. Then, applying a light layer of foundation over the top is like laying the skin over the bones. I've never been a 'start with the eyes' person. When people start with eye makeup, I can't see their vision. So I have to start with the skin. If the skin doesn't look perfect, we have to start over.' Phillips told Allure that branding is meant to be 'very sexy' and is 'very inspired by all those years when I was coming up, looking at magazines in the 1990s.' As many of her peers launched product lines, Phillips held back—but she told the outlet she was 'always taking notes': 'I'd been doing that forever in hopes that I'd launch something someday,' she said.
