Shakira, Jason Aldean, and Brooks and Dunn Fenway shows abruptly cancelled just hours before showtime—Here's what we know

Time of India30-05-2025
Boston was buzzing with excitement as global superstar
Shakira
and country heavyweights Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn were all set to light up Fenway Park this week—but in a dramatic turn of events, the highly anticipated concerts were cancelled at the last minute, leaving fans heartbroken and demanding answers.
Late Wednesday, just hours before the first show was set to begin, Fenway's official concert account dropped the bombshell via Instagram and X: 'Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shakira and Jason Aldean and Brooks & Dunn performances originally scheduled for May 29th and May 30th, respectively, at Fenway Park have been cancelled.'
And just like that, months of planning and excitement evaporated. While ticket refunds were promised, no clear reason was initially given—adding to the swirl of speculation and frustration online.
But behind the vague 'unforeseen circumstances,' sources told TMZ that Boston Inspectional Services pulled the plug due to building issues—specifically, safety concerns related to the stage's structural integrity. PEOPLE later confirmed with a source that a routine pre-show inspection flagged critical faults, leading to the shutdown.
'All team members are safe,' the source assured—but that didn't stop the rumour mill from churning.

In the comment section of Fenway Concerts' cancellation post, fans claimed stage construction issues were to blame. 'The stage roof buckled when trying to mount one of the big screens,' one person alleged.
Needless to say, the cancellation sparked a wave of disappointment—many fans had flown in, booked hotels, and taken time off work. 'They better refund people for plane tickets and hotels too. BS!!!' one fan fumed.
To make matters more bittersweet, Shakira herself had already arrived in Boston. Just a day before the announcement, she took to Instagram Stories with a cheerful 'Hello, Boston! What a sweet welcome!' alongside a photo of a table full of colourful macaroons and framed photos of the singer—likely a warm welcome from her hotel or team.
Adding salt to the wound, Fenway Park had reshared Shakira's post only hours before announcing the cancellation.
Jason Aldean, for his part, simply reposted the venue's message to his Instagram Stories—no additional statement, no elaboration. Still, fans flooded his page with messages of disappointment: 'Huge fan, Jason… someone's gotta say something about what happened at least.'
With no rescheduled dates announced yet and lingering questions about what really went wrong backstage, fans are left stunned—and hoping their favourite stars can find a way to make it up to them soon.

AI gives ‘happy ending' to ‘Raanjhanaa': Why the film industry needs urgent policy actions

The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood raised questions in India about why similar protections against artificial intelligence weren't being discussed in the Indian entertainment industry. Finally, the re-release of Raanjhanaa's (2013) Tamil remake, Ambikapathy, with an AI-enabled 'happy ending', has stirred a much-delayed debate on the need for a policy framework on the use and scope of AI in the Indian film industry. The fact that one of the first AI-enabled interventions that has captured the box office is not using the technology to enable new storytelling; instead experiments with it without much respect for the original creators' vision is evidence of the age we have already entered. At a time when franchises and remakes rule the roost at the box office, Raanjhanaa portends a dangerous shift if left unchecked by key stakeholders in an industry where many still routinely struggle to safeguard their right to work and artistic integrity, and often fail to secure the basics like fair contracts, credit and safety at the workplace, etc. This is a clarion call to action. Canadian physicist, pacifist, and feminist Ursula Franklin defines technology as 'a way of doing things'. Franklin says technology not only changes our relationships with each other as individuals and communities, but it also reshapes our notions of power and authority. In a capital-led industry where film studios, corporates and tech-led streaming platforms already have considerable power, the lack of an AI action plan can have serious ramifications for the livelihood of lakhs of film workers. Recently, a friend who lost his job had clarity that it happened due to AI-led changes in his sector. Being able to track industry trends over time prepared and enabled him to cope. Many freelance film professionals do the same when the industry is hit by seasonal recessions. Knowing the reason enables them to move to what the industry calls a plan B and not view their inability to get hired as a comment on their talent or ability. AI is already redefining hiring practices in pre-production and post-production in the Indian film industry. AI-generated images, videos and voices are being used to replace the labour of various film professionals. Labour-intensive tasks that took many hours can now be done with drastically smaller teams and budgets. Thus, a data-led policy can empower lakhs of film professionals to strategise and envision their future. Imagine a scenario where a whole film's remake is made through AI-enabled technology. While the stars and a small group of senior technicians might be able to protect their interests (at least legally), the others in the food chain (dubbing artists, junior actors, lyricists, playback singers, musicians, screenwriters) will be forced to deal with the fallout. Not only will many lose employment opportunities, but it can also seriously undermine their right to receive royalties, straddling them with the burden of a long-drawn legal battle they can't afford. Strangely, in this AI-enabled present, the more distinct a style an auteur possesses, the more vulnerable they will be, as distinct styles can be organised into patterns and thus will be more easily picked by LLMs. I have already heard youngsters put up prompts for ChatGPT to generate Gulzar-style lyrics. A casual search of the internet generates enough discussions and Reddit links on AI's capacity to return lyrics just like Gulzar. In a recent interview at the Jaipur Literature Festival (London), screenwriter Anu Singh Choudhary asked Javed Akhtar if AI will be able to write like Salim-Javed or Javed Akhtar? Quick-witted as he is, Javed saheb's response was: 'Lets not be that ambitious.' While the crowd cheered, Javed Akhtar also forewarned that he is only talking about this moment, and things will change in the future. AI, after all, is changing and upgrading everyday. Often, when we speak of AI, we tend to see it as a technology that will impact our future. But perhaps, it is time to mark that future as the present. The future is here; it is happening. The unions in the industry have to start a collective movement to safeguard the interests of their workers. Perhaps the question to ask now is, Arrey oh Samba, kitna data hai? The writer is an academic, writer and filmmaker

After Mahavatar Narsimha, Hombale Films' Chaluve Gowda confirms Mahavatar Chapter 2 to release by 2027

Mahavatar Narsimha, filmmaker Ashwin Kumar's directorial debut, has smashed multiple box office records since its release. From becoming the first-ever animated Hindi film to cross the coveted ₹ 100 crore mark in India to claiming the title of the country's highest-grossing animated film, the mythological epic has emerged as a ray of hope for the future of Indian animated cinema. Riding the wave of success, Chaluve Gowda, co-founder of Hombale Films, the banner behind Mahavatar Narsimha, along with Kleem Productions, spoke with LiveMint in an exclusive interview, confirming the release date of the second instalment of the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. Chaluve Gowda: It feels immensely gratifying to present Mahavatar Narsimha. When director Ashwin Kumar and Shilpa (Kleem Productions) first met us, we knew we had something powerful, but we never imagined it would resonate at this scale. The love from the audience has exceeded all expectations. As a studio, we believed in the storytelling and the vision, but the way it has connected across generations has been deeply humbling. Chaluve Gowda: Yes, it crossed the Kantara Hindi version. It's a proud moment for Hombale Films either way. Both Kantara and Mahavatar Narsimha come from very different creative spaces, Kantara rooted in folklore, Narasimha in epic mythology. The comparison is natural, but for us, it's about pushing boundaries with every film and we're grateful that audiences have embraced both so wholeheartedly. Chaluve Gowda: It started with Ashwin Kumar's passion for Indian mythology and his vision of telling these stories in a format that today's generation can relate to, animation with cinematic depth. We instantly saw the potential for a larger universe. It is going to be something timeless, culturally rich and visually global. Chaluve Gowda: Of course, there will be challenges for creating high-fidelity models of divine figures, to ensure the cultural and visual accuracy. But Ashwin Kumar, Kleem Production and the entire team worked closely to get every frame right. Chaluve Gowda: Let the film speak for itself. We don't want to fixate on numbers, but I can say this: it was a deeply ambitious project and the investment reflects that. Quality comes at a cost and there should not be a compromise on that, especially when presenting a revered character like Narasimha. Chaluve Gowda: It means a lot. When industry veterans and legends appreciate your work, it validates the years of effort put in by the entire team. Prabhas and Prashanth Neel have been part of the Hombale journey, so their support means a lot. Subhash Ghai's kind words were special, coming from someone who has shaped Indian cinema for decades; they were truly encouraging. Chaluve Gowda: The team learnt a lot during the making of the first film; technically, creatively and logistically. The next chapter will certainly come faster. Ashwin Kumar is already deep in development, and I can assure fans that Chapter Two will be coming within two years. Mahavatar Narsimha was released in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam in 2D and 3D formats.
