Will ensure 60 tickets to women in next Assembly polls: CM Revanth Reddy

HYDERABAD: Reiterating that his government remains committed to empowering women, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday said that he would take the responsibility, on behalf of the Congress, of giving 60 tickets to women in the next Assembly elections by which time the Women's Reservation Act will come into force.
Following delimitation, likely in 2026, the Assembly strength will increase to at least 153 seats.
The chief minister said, 'Soon, women's reservations will come into force in the Assembly. Seats in the Telangana Assembly will increase to 153 after delimitation. Of them, as per 33 per cent reservations, 51 seats will be reserved for women. I will take responsibility to allocate a total of 60 seats to women.'
At present, there are nine women MLAs in the Telangana Assembly — six from Congress and three from BRS. AIMIM, BJP and CPI have no women members. There are two women members of the Cabinet — Konda Surekha and Danasari Anasuya.
The chief minister was speaking at the launch of Vana Mahotsavam-2025, a mass tree plantation drive at Prof. Jayashankar Telangana Agriculture University in Hyderabad. The government has set a target of planting 18 crore saplings under the programme.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to plant a sapling in the name of one's mother, Revanth urged mothers to plant saplings in the name of their children. 'Nature will protect us if we take care of nature,' he said.
The chief minister also appealed to people to plant at least two saplings per household, stating that Telangana would become a green zone if trees were nurtured like children.
Listing government initiatives for women, Revanth said the state provided Rs 21,000 crore in loans to self-help groups this year. He noted that women are being encouraged to set up solar plants and run government schools.
The government is providing free RTC bus travel for women and has supported them in leasing 1,000 buses to RTC, making them bus owners.
Space has also been provided for women's groups to market their products at Hitec City, the chief minister said.
Revanth reiterated his government's target of making one crore women millionaires and said self-help groups would also be formed in urban areas. He said efforts were being made to empower women in all fields and ensure they lead a life of self-respect in 'Indiramma rule'.
Forest and Environment Minister Konda Surekha and PCCF Suvarna were among those present.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the Revenue department officials to prepare plans for allotting Bhudhaar numbers to all land parcels across the State. He wanted the officials to expedite clearance of applications for hereditary and other forms of mutations received during Revenue Sadassus held earlier. He examined the models of the new offices buildings to house the offices of the sub-registrars in 10 core urban areas during the meeting. The new offices should have parking places, canteen and other basic infrastructure, he said. The sub-registrar offices should be designed in such a manner that they were people-friendly and avoid scope for any inconvenience to the visitors. Congress MLA Anant Patel says will go ahead with Aug 14 protest

Congress MLA and Tribal leader Anant Patel on Wednesday said the protest against the Par-Tapi-Narmada river link project will be held as planned at Dharampur in Valsad on August 14. He made the announcement after BJP MP Dhaval Patel, in a press conference, released a letter received from the Union Jal Shakti Ministry which states that the Par-Tapi-Narmada river link project has been discontinued. On August 10, Dhaval Patel wrote a letter to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti seeking the current status of the Par-Tapi-Narmada river link project. In its reply, the Union Jal Shakti Ministry said: 'In the 21st Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers (SCILR), meeting held on 14th December 2023, this project was also reviewed, and it was recorded that the ministry has discontinued this project from the status of Priority links under NPP.' A copy of the document, signed by Senior Joint Commissioner Avanti Verma of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, is with The Indian Express. Speaking on the occasion, Dhaval Patel accused the Congress of spreading fake information on the Par-Tapi-Narmada link project. 'The Central and state governments had in 2022-23 clarified that such a project had been discontinued. Today, we have received an official letter from the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti stating that the project has been discontinued. The DPR (Detail Project Report), which the Congress leader released, was of 2017,' Dhaval Patel said. Reacting to the remarks of the Valsad MP, the Congress MLA said he does not have faith in the BJP government and that the protest against the project will be held as planned. 'The state Cabinet discussed the issue today (Wednesday) and the government said that the project has been discontinued. I don't have faith in the BJP government. We will go ahead with our protest on August 14 at Dharampur town,' Anant Patel said. 'Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel should come out and give us a clarification on the issue. Otherwise, we will go ahead with our protest,' the Vansda MLA added.

'Vote chori' row: India's election process under scanner? Experts debate

The debate in this episode of News Today centers on the Congress party's "vote chori" campaign, which alleges voter suppression and fraud during elections. The discussion addresses the Supreme Court's observation that the special intensive revision in Bihar is voter-friendly, a point contested by the Congress. The Bharatiya Janata Party counters these claims, referencing historical election results and a 1980 voter list issue involving Sonia Gandhi. With the Election Commission caught in the political crossfire, there are calls for greater transparency from the institution. As one panellist noted, "...if his charges are all wrong, I think the Election Commission can easily, you know, sort of prove him wrong, and that's what the Election Commission needs to do, because you must restore faith of the people in the election system." The programme examines the allegations and counter-allegations from both political sides.
