The Gary Community School Corp. is seeking qualified teachers to join its team of educators, according to a release.
With the guiding belief that 'Strong Roots. Bright Future' begins with exceptional teachers, the district is working to fill open positions across grade levels and content areas for the upcoming school year, the release said.

Three students from the Valparaiso University College of Business have been named Indiana State Champions in the Microsoft Office Suite Specialist Spring Qualifier, a release said.
Douglas Newton took first place in the Excel competition; Madeline Poppe in Word and Julia Sullivan was named champion in Powerpoint, the release said.
State championships in MOS applications are won as part of the certification process for each program. Competitors are judged based on how well they perform on their proctored, standard-based exams, and — in the event of tied scores — how quickly they were able to complete the test.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department is conducting an emergency hiring process for current law enforcement officers who would like to become Lake County Sheriff's Department police officers, a release said.
Applicants must be a certified police officer and must have successfully completed training through a state-accredited police academy. Applicants who are not Indiana residents must relocate to Indiana.
Applications will be accepted online via publicsafetyapp.com through midnight Aug. 10.
South Shore Line passengers are advised busing substitution will be inplace throughout the weekend of July 26-27 due to construction in Chicago, a release said.
That weekend there will be no service to the Museum Campus or Van Buren Street stations.
Passengers traveling to and from downtown Chicago will be transported by bus between Millennium Station and Metra's 18th Street Station. Train passengers traveling to and from the 57th Street Station will not be impacted, the release said. The buses will not stop at Van Buren Street or Museum Campus stations.
The construction project is part of the $650 million expansion of South Shore Line service and is necessary to expand capacity through the area north of 18th Street to accommodate additional trains, the release said.
Ivy Tech Community College Valparaiso Campus has been awarded the inaugural Collegiate Purple Star of Indiana designation, which recognizes Indiana postsecondary institutions that provide outstanding support to U.S. military-affiliated students, according to a release.
The CPSI designation, awarded by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizes institutions that excel in creating a supportive environment for military-connected students throughout their educational journey, the release said.
The CPSI designation is awarded across three achievement tiers based on 37 standards across eight categories, the release said.

New research published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities suggests kids who get smartphones before age 13 face significantly higher risks of mental health problems. On a summer day in Champlin, many kids are busy running, playing and swinging in the park. "I think it's important for them to just still grow up without the constant electronics," said Milaniya Oayenyagra, a mother of three from Rogers. Countless others are at home absorbed in their smartphones and social media. Almost two-thirds of kids say they were 10 or younger when they got their first smartphone. "We see anxiety increasing, negative body image increasing, we see thoughts to hurt self," said Dr. Joshua Stein, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and clinical director at PrairieCare. Stein admits it's a tricky world for parents to navigate. "Even as parents, we're just trying to catch up and understand our own use and our own patterns, and I think it's a really good chance to start that conversation now wherever you're at, even if you have to claw back some of these privileges." Stein says if you feel like what you've already done isn't working for your child or your family, make changes, like adding parental controls, setting time limits and eliminating use close to bedtime. He also adds there are red flags to look for that may indicate a problem online. "If all of the sudden when they come off their phones, they're irritable, they're agitated or if they start to just all of the sudden not use their phone at all," he said. "Sometimes it can be that they're being bullied, sometimes it can be that they're frustrated, but other times it can be that they're being preyed upon." Regular check-ins, where you ask if there is anything online that makes your child feel sad or uncomfortable, can help you gauge their mental health and open the door to suggest tech-free activities. "Parents need to make sure they're providing their young kids that opportunity to make play, that it's OK for them to be bored and it's OK for your older teenagers to be bored, too, and to figure out how to connect and have fun with one another," he said. Stein suggests families use the free Family Media Plan provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It helps keep track of social media usage and set family priorities.

How did John MacArthur die? What we know about pastor's cause of death
John MacArthur, the longtime pastor of a megachurch in Southern California and founder of a syndicated media ministry, died July 14 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. "Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior," MacArthur's media ministry, Grace to You, wrote on social media. "This evening, his faith became sight." MacArthur, 86, was the pastor at Grace Community Church, a nondenominational congregation in Sun Valley, California, a post he held since 1969. Tom Patton, another pastor at Grace Community Church, said at a July 13 service that MacArthur had been hospitalized after contracting pneumonia. USA TODAY has reached out to Grace Community Church. MacArthur's cause of death has not been announced, though he had been hospitalized with pneumonia in his final days, Patton said. "This week pastor John contracted pneumonia," Patton said. "He was admitted into the hospital and may be in the presence of the Lord soon." A message on Grace Community Church's website noted the same about MacArthur's condition. "Last week, Pastor John unexpectedly contracted pneumonia, and the Lord took him home on Monday, July 14," the message said. A message on Grace to You's website said MacArthur died "after dealing with some significant health challenges dating back to early 2023." "Just as the details of John's death are new to you, they are new to us as well. We probably have many of the same thoughts and feelings that you do," Grace to You's website said. John MacArthur was a pastor and author known for leading Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and for his work with the media ministry Grace to You. He was also the longtime president and chancellor of The Master's University, a private Christian university in Santa Clarita, California, and founder of The Master's Seminary in Los Angeles. MacArthur became the pastor at Grace Community Church in 1969 after graduating from Talbot Theological Seminary in California, according to his leadership bio. Throughout his career, he also wrote nearly 400 books. Like some other preachers across the U.S., MacArthur entered the public spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic when he hosted large gatherings despite local policies limiting congregations to small numbers outside. "At the center of Dr. MacArthur's ministry was an unwavering commitment to declare God's truth, and Pastor John preached the Word in season and out of season," Grace Community Church's website says. "Even in recent years, though beset with health challenges, he persisted in teaching, leading, and investing in the ministries the Lord had entrusted to him." In addition to his wife of 61 years, Patricia, MacArthur is survived by four children, fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
